It’s absurd for anyone to think Woody won’t be successful without Bowerman. He won’t suddenly lose any fitness from leaving the group. He is the same athlete he was before he left. Only difference is his mental might be better. Best of luck Woody!

Im glad this interview ask about what Jerry meant by "You're throwing away your career". Cleared his name.

Woody Kincaid is right about wanting more focus and changing coaches, etc. The gas gas approach works but it can hurt you as well in the long run. I would just be careful about placing anything on the other athletes. Folks move on, it happens but Mo and Grant doing what they are doing shouldn't hurt Woody. Honestly, like it or not, they probably pushed him to the level he is at.

It would be nice to hear the philosophy of his new coach. How does he change his training? All I heard was that Woody wants to ease up a bit. Let's get to the pith.

i don’t know much but think he said in a interview that he does lot of double thresholds, and bowerman doesn’t do that

@@jon5173 So many training philosophies out there. I personally am not a fan of training off of metrics. It's too mechanical and takes the spirit of it away

I haven’t watched this video but he’s talked about it. Jerry makes a plan he thinks is right and most people have to follow that or fall off. Jerry is known to do big volume threshold workouts (such as 10 mile tempos or 10 miles worth of 1-2 mile repeats at threshold. I often see ~4:40s from his guys but obviously don’t have exact details. I know they also hammer speed but I think much of it is at the end of big threshold sessions. Some workouts I’ve seen are: 10 miles of threshold reps, 4 mile tempo + 4xmile @ 10k, 4 mile tempo + 3x(800, 400, 400) @ 5k ish. I think the main difficulty is just the volume of the workouts and the lack of adjustments on bad days. Mike smith is known for volume as well but it sounds like he’s gotten pretty big into double threshold workouts (splitting the volume up, often to get more volume in an easier on the legs manner. Woody has mentioned doing 6 miles of T in the morning and 6 miles of T in the evening. Something they never did at bowerman. Other than that, most pro teams have similar philosophies these days. Focus heavily on the aerobic side and work hard. The creativeness and ability to work with the specific athlete is often the difference between coaching groups at that level. I think Woody just wanted more flexibility in his training and to not be thrown into the meat grinder with 23 year olds as he ventures into his 30s.

Listen to the Citius Mag’s interview with Mike Smith, his new coach. You’ll quickly get an idea of what he’s about and why so many people want to train with him.

One major thing that is not discussed is "What exactly is provided by a particular Club? Everything has to be itemised. I mean, who pays for all this? eg Access to an athletic track, sports gear (shoes and outfits) actual coaching expertise, travel expenses, dietry expenses, medical expenses. Etc. Is there a "salary" involved for personal expenses? Do you tie yourself via a contract? What are the criteria involved? Sports Company sponsorships? Until all these things are discussed the "reasons" are not fully understood. Do you have a "regular" job as well? How many hours do you have to work? etc. I'm an old guy and we always had to have a regular job and trained in the AM before work and evenings. We had to pay for EVERYTHING and it wasn't until we achieved world class times that sponsorships were earned via shoe/sports wear companies. Expenses from Sports promotors once the results had been achieved. We arranged our own training partners and coaching advice. If Woody did all that then he would have true independence.

Interesting. I've got a huge screen and the video software puts everyone on it in rectangles. Everyone is below the camera for me so if I'm looking at them on the screen I'm not looking at the camera. I'll think of another way to do this. Using a smaller monitor might help make it look like I'm looking at camera. Jon's using his laptop so maybe I go back to that. -Wejo
