We are heading into the warmer months which means its time to shear the sheep! While wool is not my primary purpose for having sheep here at the permaculture homestead, the yarn is a perk. This is a quick video on how I package the raw fleece for the mill and a few notes of wisdom on how long raw fleece can be, and how to know if your sheep should be sheared more than once per season.
The permaculture uses for my sheep: they maintain our natural grassy forage, they eat the leftover forage not consumed by the horses in our rotational grazing system, and they also ingest the parasitic eggs that infect the horses while grazing, which interrupts the parasite lifecycle. The horses do the same for the sheep. As a result we do not need to conduct routine deworming here at the farm.
