When I was a young child, my meticulous mother taught me how to do elegant beaded wool applique with fine wool felt from Germany. Hand embroidery was also taught by local nuns, totally ruining my Saturday mornings. As a result of that unwanted pressure, I hate doing all forms of hand-sewing and won't do it. However, I enjoy high-quality sewing machines.

I found this a great way to figure out where the pieces go before you put them on the background wool. I use a clear silicone pad made just for applique. You put the pattern under the pad which is clear, lay the pieces on top of the pattern, and iron it. The pieces stick together, then move the pieces to the background. So much easier them trying to figure out where they go.

Anna, do you have any problems with moths getting into your woolens? If so, how do you prevent? I live in Arkansas, and have had some woes with moths getting into stored expensive wool yarns. Have had to throw out some beautiful yarns due to this. I have used moth balls, lavender sachets, cedar lined closet, plastic tubs with lock lids...and now a metal can holding some of my best from recent travels! I am also trying pieces of cedar hanging over hangers in one of my closets where wool is stored. Any tips or advice much appreciated. You might not have the problem due to a different climate. Thanks so much for all you do!!! Got to get my sewing machine humming! Love to watch and listen as I sew.

I have to say we don't have a moth issue...on a weirder note...we don't have fleas...so our dogs don't have to worry. some local stitchers do put sprigs of fresh lavender. metal boxes sounds like a good idea. Thank you for spending time with us :)

Hi! I'm somewhat of a newbie to wool applique. Could you tell me please: Is it best to adhere all the pieces to the background and then do the stitching? I have never seen it done like this, and years ago, I would put on a piece and stitch it down, add another stitch it into place, etc., etc., etc.! Tedious. I like your method of adhering it all down, but does it make it difficult to stitch in some areas that are slightly beneath others, if you get my drift? Thanks, Ann! Kind regards from Pennsylvania.
@quiltroadies1695

I agree...tedious and that is why I fuse. But, with that said...if I have a pattern that is fairly straight forward I will fuse it all done then start with the smallest pieces and stitch those first and move around the piece stitching the ones that are on stop and would hold the bottom ones down. I have never lost a piece nor do I find it difficult. Now...for a project that has a gazzilion pieces like stems with lots of leaves I will stitch the stems all down then fuse the leaves on and work that way...hope this helps!

Oh, Anna! THANK YOU jillions for replying to my question! It's a HUGE help! You are such a nice person...I wish I lived right next door to you! Your stitching down some pieces on super-detailed patterns is a great idea. I am working on a bee skep wool flannel kit that my oldest daughter strongly hinted to me that she wanted! Being on the simple side, I fused every piece down and am now stitching around each item as needed. Gosh, this is so much better than working around applique pins! I do find it a tiny bit difficult to push my needle through where the adhesive is, but my hands are arthritic so maybe it's a strength matter for me. I am using an embroidery needle of a larger size which is easier for me to handle. This Bare Roots kit is going to make up nicely! Thanks for your help and ideas, Anna! God bless and kind regards!

You’re welcome...if it is hard to go through the adhesive it’s the product. If you use Soft Fuse you won’t have a problem on the next project. It sure does sound like a cute one!!!

Thank you, Anna, for the Soft Fuse recommendation!! I will get some for my next project, which is also a Bare Roots kit....firecrackers! I imagine the Heat n Bond and Steam A Seam 2 which I have used are likely best suited for machine applique since a machine is much more powerful than my hands! Have a blessed day, and kind regards!

I normally stitch though all my layers. If a miss a layer no big deal because the pieces are all pre whipped stitched before the fancy stitching.
