I so stubbornly wanted to figure this full-site editing out by myself just pressing buttons and seeing what happens but after lots of frustrations I can now be soothed by the calm clear voice of the expert and some chill instrumentals :)

Thank you so much for these videos. It's been a while since I last made a website and then there was still an old editor in use. Yesterday, I wondered, among other things, the widths of the blocks in the page templates, where they can be changed. Now I know :) I'm continuing my studies, I'm excited to make sites again ..

Thanks for the heads-up. Two questions: 1 How will FSE affect contact form 7 with which I use custom css code? 2. As a newbe should I explore things like headers and footers or wait for FSE to mature?

Hi Ken, FS3 won't effect contact form 7 (you can still add custom css code). I would wait for FSE to mature before diving in.

Hi Richard, it already is :) We have a plugin called WooBuilder Blocks www.pootlepress.com/woobuilder-blocks/ that lets you use Gutenberg for WooCommerce Product Pages, and one called Storefront Blocks www.pootlepress.com/storefront-blocks/ that lets you customize the WooCommerce shop page and there are already Blocks for Cart and Checkout (part of woocommerce blocks plugin)

This would have worked better for me if you had started from scratch with the Tove theme. As it is, you have some content and you bounce around, so that as I try to follow along on my own sandbox site, I just get confused between what you show and I see.

I think FSE is at that stage where it is clever without being useful. Not in any practical sense! If you're used to dabbling with templates, know your way around hooks, and perhaps use tools like Elementor, then you don't really need to go down the FSE route. At least not yet. Where it does score highly over other approaches is that it can be used on the fly to create one-off templates per post. That is genuinely useful.
@jamiewp

Hi Antar - my view is that with FSE WordPress becomes a Block System baked into it's core and this has huge implications for tools like Elementor (widgets) and Divi.

Thanks for the clear explanation of the FSE! I am new to the block editing, but as I see it, it is going to be unavoidable. Just a matter of getting used to, I think. But you speak of a Gutenburg plugin? Isn’t Gutenburg built in WordPress as a standard ? And I love the shortcut of just typing /button and a button appears.

Hmm, two months later with 5.8.2 (even 5.9 alpha) and I can't follow along at ~5 mins as there is no LHS column with template options. Clicking on the top left W icon keeps going back to the old school dashboard area. All I wanted to do for now is create a simple landing page template with no nav header for a temp coming soon page. Looking forward to more uptodate videos and I might have to wait until the beta, or even final, is released.

@@jamiewp I've got a script to easily reinstall 5.8+ from scratch. Looks like the first 5.9 beta is out tomorrow, so the interface won't change from now until the full release. Is it possible to in FSE to reduce the excessive, horizontal, 'white space' between blocks, that themes impose, without any way of reducing it, other than going into the CSS, which amateurs, like me, don't feel up to doing? Also: I'm assuming, from what you demonstrate Jamie, that it would be no longer necessary put up with the massively long, vertical, cover images in the header, that themes impose?

Is the now missing Customizer under the control of the Theme or WP/Gutenberg? I.E does the FSE Theme remove it? It does it with a new admin user as well, tried resetting the 2023 directory and file perms, etc. Not sure why it's not working. I really wanted to use FSE to redesign my site, but it failed on the first hurdle - I mean if I can't even add or edit a navigation menu - it only shows ALL the pages, or none I can't really use this. Googling I'm not alone in this error and no obvious fix. Obviously not ready for prime time yet.

EDIT - I tried it with 2022. It worked despite warning complaints....and then flipped back to 2023 with the Navigation edited, and it complained still...but does it. Very odd.
