The Romulan spy cannot be Picard's fault. He didn't recruit the lady he didn't promote her to the point of being an ambassador he didn't decide it was time for her to have a liaison with romulans. He was just fulfilling his Uber contract.

It what Admiral Satie says during her meltdown that sank her. She is upset that Picard used a quote from her father about how when a person's rights are trampled it irrevocably change and damages everyone. She blows up and accuses Picard of consorting with the Federation's enemies. And that he would sully her father's name to protect himself. She then claims she will make Picard pay, and she had taken down men greater than he. As an impartial arbitrator she isn't supposed to have an agenda.

I've noticed across several episodes that a lot of history and literature references seem to be getting lost here when the script refers to details that the education and cultural literacy of the 80s/90s would have emphasized. There's probably a specific vignette of how the Salem witch trials were being taught (The Crucible, maybe?) which explains the significance of the admiral showing up and then leaving without elaborating. (Darmok, etc.)

About retirement. My dad is 77, suffered 2 strokes, and still mayor of his town. He refuses to retire. I'm 42 and retired due to injury. Would I go back to work if I could? Probably not. I enjoy not having a boss and spending time with my family and animals. Now on to Trek. Animals are still consumed, they just aren't raised for that primary purpose on Earth. Replicators can make almost anything, including liquor. However naturally made liquor and food tastes better. Synthehol produces the affects of liquor, but without all the harmful traits that can occur with long term use. As for current street narcotics, I'm not sure about. Picard series shows people use other types of narcotics to get high.

Frakes liked her as he worked with her on the miniseries ‘North and South’. The show he met his wife on, and many of the cast appeared on TNG. Such as Riker’s dad Mitchel Ryan, Mark Twain by Hal Holbrook, David Ogden Stiers who appears in the episode “Half a life”. Kirstie Allen also appeared in Star Trek movies and Jim Metzler appeared in DS9. There could be more, but those are just ones I’ve recognized now that I’ve seen the first season of North and South.

Did you guys talk about what the episode title referred to? About how a Military officer could court martial soldiers in the field. And sentence the same soldiers. I know that Picard discusses it in the episode. Perhaps his fear of that, affected his view in the current case. Maybe he felt he was going to die and putting his hand on his head was a sign of defeat. Also The Nth Degree could also have referenced the book Flowers for Algernon, where a low IQ man is experimented on and his IQ increases by a substantial amount. There was a wonderful made for TV movie starring Cliff Robertson. The book is an excellent read. Dwight Schultz (Lt. Barcley) might have been thinking about the book when he said the word "Smal-ler'

I disagree with Ricardo here. In an American court, which these societies are clearly based on, she'd be unable to present most of her evidence because it's inflammatory and not exculpatory. I also just assumed that a lot of court martial and hearings happen off screen and would be super boring to watch after big events.

Money in Star Trek is very inconsistent. In all the series and the movies there are references to money being discontinued in the 22nd century. However there are sometimes its context is Earth, other times Starfleet, other times the Federation. But then whenever it’s relevant to the plot there seems to be something that’s exchanged for goods. Then in TAS and DS9 these is a loose mention of Federation Credits as some sort of currency. Then DS9 has Latinum which everyone, including Starfleet, seems to have. But then in some dialogue it’s indicated that Federation members don’t get paid or any form of money/goods. However these is also lots of talk of paying rent and fees to the Federation. And then there are a large number of instances where people try to buy things in the federation and even mention of banks. And of course if you look at Picard, Discovery, and Enterprise there seems to be full economic systems again. So in essence the economy in the future is whatever you need it to be like in the current story. Also in at least two episodes it’s indicated replicators can produce real alcohol, it may just be not allowed on starships normally.

Worf can't reveal the truth about his dad because there were other people on the council that went along with the plan to blame his father even though they knew he was innocent. Worf talked about how they would probably not allow Worf to get the truth out because of this. As for the vegan thing, I'm not a vegan myself, but I have sought out, listened to, and read a decent amount of vegans who give the reasons that they are vegan. Take what I say with a grain of salt because I'm just interpreting what they said, but I would say a decent amount of vegans would probably still eat lab grown meat given the reasons that I've heard. The most common reason that people are vegan is for animal suffering, at least from what I've heard, and lab grown meat would largely eliminate or reduce that. I'm also pretty sure that many vegans would not eat it because you do need stem cells in order to create lab grown meat and many would object to that because you are still taking something from the animal without its consent, even if the process is painless and the animal is treated very well. There's also some vegans that just don't like the taste of meat or have grown to dislike it because they haven't had it for very long. Like I said, don't take what I say as truth--you really should talk to vegans about this specific question--but based on what I've heard vegans say their reasoning is, I think a decent amount would eat it and a decent amount would not.

FYI, animals being harmed is 100% what veganism is about. That's why like human breast milk is fine, since humans can give consent. And at least some honey's can at least claim to be vegan since they use like natural methods to make the bees leave their honeycombs and go to another nest so it's not "stealing" from the bees and therefore exploiting them since the bees left willingly. Think that's a grey zone one.

The definition of veganism is: "Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals." If we reconfigured protein derived from plants to take the shape of animal protein, then vegans wouldn't have an ethical problem with eating it.
