Set an objective or goal for each week (based on a higher-level / longer-term goal) and then schedule "power hour" blocks each day to progress towards that goal. Ex: one objective I have this week is to learn Ruby basics (needed for my current job). All week I have blocked out 7PM - 8PM to rewrite existing applications I've built, but doing so in Ruby instead of the original language. It doesn't always end up being one hour: sometimes 30 minutes; sometimes 3 hours, point being its always marked on my calendar no matter what "flow state" I can get into

Yeah indeed, everything is true. It is not hard to make an optimal balance once you make a routine and stick to it. In the initial years there is definitely a struggle, and also when you are working on your business, it does require time and patience, it sucks a lot from inside and sometimes one may feel less productive because of so much involvement but at young age one is highly driven and the body is highly energetic and active definitely make the most of it there as well. I too like waking up early in the morning, and also working on my business as well as KZitem channel. But if you see results, its worth the effort and struggle. Thanks Brad for sharing this. Stoked to see something different also from your side and best wishes for 1 million subs, you are almost there.

This channel has thought me more than my two stints at Uni. Thank you Traversy! Not like you haven't received tonnes of meditation recommendations so far but just focus on the fundamentals. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 1, breathe out for 5. Once you can sit with no internal thought for 30 seconds, try a minutes, then two.. and thus the life of zen begins.

Thank you for sharing this vital insight. I have six children and three of them have special needs and it is very important to have a well structured routine, as it allows the day to flow much smoother. Also, the point you had about cutting out the nonsense is very important. In my opinion, becoming aware of where we put our focus is directly related to how much we actually grow. Thank you again for sharing these points!

Hi Brad, First of all I would like to thank you. The way you explain and contribute about various topics is awesome. I listen kinda like a podcast. I have a question if I may: I currently started as a Junior in Software Development ( more focused on backend, Java - Spring ) and Frontend ( Angular - GWT ). I feel a bit overwhelmed by the amount of stuff I have to read through like internal documentation, new/old technologies used in one project. Do you have any advice on the workflow you use to boost the productivity? I’m currently reading Headfirst Design Pattern, Clean Code and official documentation of the tools we use. I think about starting an open source project to expand my skills. A video about this would be great 👍 where you start a project on github and show your own workflow (how you search, understand and implement, how you commit properly) Thank you very much

I have been a developer for 24 years, and I could probably write a book about in this subject. :-) I agree with a most , I would say that awareness of the concept of balance goes a long way in all you do in life. I was crap at this and basically burned out. I took a couple of years off doing something completely different that was a simple but physically challenging job. I believe as a developer you develop a certain mindset, problem solving becomes an addiction, more or less, and your brain wants to be in that bubble all the time. Therefore discipline to put you mind on something else regularly is crucial. I started sailing and took an interest in film making. Today I work much less, as a project owner/manager, and doing some of my own projects for fun. I am very grateful that I took those years off to get a new perspective.

For me, The best tip is to write all the things (at night) that you want to perform tomorrow and prioritize them. Also be a morning guy that really boots energy. Try to stay away from mobile and social media, they take away all your time without a single benefit. Always say thankyou to your God, family and people that really cares you, helps you. Stay humble and give generous contribution to the people and community surrounds you.

Good stuff. I just want to emphasize, know how you recharge. For extroverts like myself, burnout can happen sooner if you're coding all day and don't socialize. At my job, hardly anyone spoke during the workday (I live in Japan so there are some cultural factors at play) and I lacked the social recharging I needed which slowly depleted me.

There are two ideas I find most important: 1) Don't let yourself getting distracted while working. If your thoughts get somewhere else, it will take some time to recollect them and get back to work. So if you get distracted often, you may end up spending many hours and getting done practically nothing; I think people who are able to stay concentrated for 6-7-8 hours don't have many problems finding the balance between work and life, since they are able to get things done really quickly. 2) Start thinking about your work as you get up and keep thinking about it even when you are away from your PC. Morning hours are perfect for planning your workflow and revising where you are at and where you wanna go. And most of my best ideas came to me while I was walking. Good thing about programming is that you can get things done by thinking about them so you don't always need a keyboard around for that. Coding itself is relatively easy when you have a good idea of what you are doing.

I always have to be looking ahead to make sure I'm doing the right thing at the right time. There is nobody else to tell me. They count on me to figure it out and execute. Make sure to make time for family, friends and hobbies, its important. I try to spend at least 5 hours a week studying something new or deeper in to technology topic to build my value as a developer / engineer. I lift weights and walk treadmill for thinking time. I find myself doing that too much sometimes and when I ditched all the time I spent on mindless scrolling, it made an eye-opening time-saving experiences. If you want to do that, make a time for that about 5 - 10 minutes and turn your phone and notifications off when you focus on coding or whatever you have to do.
