When I was 10 years old my dad was in the market for a pickup to replace the '86 Ranger he had sold years before. My next door neighbor's elderly father had stopped driving so his medium olive metallic 1971 GMC 1500 stepside was sitting at the curb for sale. I suggested my dad buy that one. He paid $1200 for a low mileage, 307, 3 on the tree, light duty stepside with a body color original wood bed underneath a removable concrete slab. Mostly original paint with patina, original plates. He rebuilt the engine, swapped the 3spd for a TH350 auto with shift kit, dual exhaust and wheels and tires. 22 years later still has the same paint, he's building another engine for it, TH400 trans. He installed heavier duty rear springs. It's done home renovations, hauled boat trailers, been filled up with firewood, bark, dirt, concrete mix bags, swap meet duty, dump runs, moved furniture, I drove it in the local 4th of July parade, autocrossed it twice, and dad's taken it to the drag strip several times. He doesn't paint it because if it's too nice you can't do work with it. Love that old truck.

I'll never forget my grandfathers brother talking down to him for driving an old work truck and never buying a " nice car". My grandfather was the wealthiest of his brothers, owning a small construction company. My grandfather never cared to show off, just let his work speak for itself.

Sorry about your grandpa Rabbit. Lost mine not long ago. He was a mechanic wrenching cars until the day he passed. I still miss the way he always called me “dumb ass”.

My Papa just passed away, 10:00am, 2/21/21, it's 1:30pm same day. We just lost my Grandma in September and he went to join her. Thank you Rob for giving me a few minutes of reprieve from the grieving. I like your Dad and Grandpa stories.

My dad punched my uncle in the face. But that's a story for another time. How could you do that to us Rob!!!

Lost my dad 2 weeks ago. I feel the statement of “the glue of the family” spent first thanksgiving alone in 24 years. Holidays have fallen apart before they started

My work truck is a '91 E-350 diesel ambulance. After it's service with the Tustin CA fire department it went to a company that supplies vehicles for movies. When someone asks why I don't buy a newer truck I ask "how many people's work trucks have saved lives and been a movie star?"

There's no feeling like working in a car/truck/tractor/any piece of equipment that doesn't owe you anything. Like, you're not working to make payments anymore. You're working to just work.

I grew up learning how to drive and then driving a 1962 Dodge D100, granny gear, double clutching and all. That thing, while not in the family anymore, is STILL working HARD on another ranch in Texas. Now, to tie this in to Rabbits story, the passenger door on this Dodge also didn't work. But instead of making it a permanent 1 door, we just screwed a a slide bolt latch to the inside and the catch loop to the door.... Viola' brand new door latch!

Had an '06 Silverado ext cab sb used as a work truck. It's name was Vanessa, I put 400,00 miles on it. Drove it from Maine to Missouri to Memphis then back in limp mode. Truck had some ghost, but you could reset it by turning the radio off opening the door then poof it was fixed. She's still going and is a legend around here, some trucks you can't kill.

We call old trucks like that, Chevy, Ford ,or Dodge, as being "loyal" old trucks. Love that story. Todd the retired trucker.

People take the old work truck for granted, but without it you wouldn’t be able to get The means for the dream car. I know what you mean about that one person that is the “glue” of the family. That was my grandmother. She passed away in 2018, and the family has sort of gone in their separate directions now. Appreciate the video, and the memories it always brings up.

This brought back a lot of memories of my grandad. Construction foreman that installed municipal sewer systems. Taught me how to hunt, fish, drive in his old work truck, use a shovel the right way, and be a good man. Damn Rabbit has me both thanking that old man and missing him a lot this morning. Keep the stories coming...
