I am so glad you spoke about the micro aggressions. The way you intellectually broke down the problems with your past workplace environment and refused to neglect to mention the racism is absolutely inspirational.

Thank you so much! 🤎 I definitely believe in being open about experiencing racism in the workplace and calling it out for what it is. I had a couple of people tell me to basically “get used to it” and I don’t agree with that at all.

Girl! So sorry that happened to you but that was a blessing disguise. Such a good a video! Buying is NOT glamorous. It’s a lot of analytics, math, and excel! I loved most of the teams I’ve been on, but the day to day mundane tasks were draining for me. If you are a creative I would not suggest the buying path. Travel and picking out your assortment is a small portion of the job. I’m going to post a video about this as well but thank you so much for posting this!

It’s really not! I knew what I was getting into, but the team can definitely make or break your experience. I learned a lot in role, but what I learned on my own was to not just look at the analytics to see what did well, but also how to do better. I will say if you’re more on the fast fashion side, you pick out assortments and see your vendors a lot more often. You’re welcome and I look forward to seeing your video! 🤎

I was humming for years about going for a role like this. As an experience VM who worked for many companies, I thought this is where ill like to be, but if this is what it looks like then maybe not. I'm studying business this year part-time plus working, but have been thinking about changing my creative direction somewhere else. I mean if I'm gonna sit behind the desk and look at numbers all day I might as well go and study to be an Archetic technician lol. At less it would be challenging, interesting, number-driven plus pays extremely well. Thank you for being open and honest

Have you done visual merchandising from a corporate level? That might be a nice change if you haven’t already. Honestly, following the money wouldn’t be terrible because there are a lot of people in fashion that worked as consultants and other roles and came back to fashion or started new. Planning may also pay better depending on where you work. Working as a designer now, I definitely spend time behind a computer, but it’s doing what I love and it’s not all the time. Studying business is super helpful and has helped me with my own brand and even if you do a stint in buying, I think you’ll learn a lot too!

No not yet, by corporate do you mean regional visual? I live in NZ so opportunities aren’t as available like most countries. Planning I haven’t considered at all because here in NZ they want you to have a buying background already ready. I think for me I’ve been in the industry so long that when I go to apply for these roles I don’t get them. Maybe it’s a sign to move ships for a bit hence why Ive been considering studying to become a architect technologist. NZ fashion scene is so behind and the company I work for now is behind the 8 ball lol they need some TLC. I’ve work for Top shop, H&M etc as a VM so helping this company is great, but I know I won’t be there for long maybe a year tops. We shall see 🙂

@@TerynAParker yes definitely! Every team is so different even within my corporation. I definitely appreciate learning the analytics and working with planners and inventory analyst. It only helped me move over to marketing.

Girl I 100% can relate with this video. I am super quiet around people I don’t know, but once I feel people out and I see that I can vibe with them then I open up. I cannot get with the gossiping and being in peoples business. I think as black women there’s a stereotype that we all enjoy drama but it’s not like that at all. I have a degree in fashion merchandising and management and currently getting my MBA in marketing. Thank you for this video because buying was the path I wanted to take in fashion. Your video sheds light on what it’s like being a black woman in corporate America. I will be launching my boutique real soon, but want to get the experience in the meantime. I hope you find a better company that fits better with you.

You’re welcome! I totally agree with you that stereotypes are always projected on us and if we don’t conform to them in the workplace, it’s not *fun* to have you around anymore. Congratulations on being in school for your MBA and for launching a boutique! That’s amazing and I’m so happy for you! Thank you so much, I did find a better company and I’m actually working on launching my own line(s) within the next year! 🤎

@@TerynAParker omg what?! Congratulations girl!!!! I’m soooo happy for you 🥲 and I’m so happy that you found a company that better suits you. Black women definitely need better representation in the fashion industry!! I hope that you can take us on the journey with you here on KZitem with launching your line. Yessss and thank you so much! 🤎🤎🤎 I do plan on posting more fashion content on here, but I am going to start a separate channel dedicated to just the label. I plan on incorporating it into this channel, but I think I like the idea of keeping it super focused on just that. I plan on posting there before the end of the month, it’s hard trying to balance it all. 😅 Also, let me know when your boutique launches!

It was the dream of a good number of people I went to undergrad with, but they landed in better roles for them. I will say despite my short stint 😂, it is so impressive to see buyers who are great at that job.

Same, my contract didn't go further than 3 months cause I was too quiet and my colleagues just frustrated, complaining all day long about everything and stabbing backs. I had nothing to talk about with those people. So end April the boss told me, that "due to pandemic" we do not have enough work to do for me. Lol.

😭 I can relate! I bet as soon as you would have complained about something or backstabbed someone, it would have been an issue. I definitely got the “too quiet” feedback, but the conversations I didn’t want to contribute to were so nasty. 🥴

@@TerynAParker yeah people are so miserable, they don't wanna be alone in there crap, so in the industry if you don't follow them you're put aside. I always been the too quiet like you and little friends as well at school. School was hell, I was quiet but because I was considered "good looking" always had girls attention, which mean guys were mostly 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬, or fake friends in order to get girls. At work still the same and I think my subconscious is copying every time got new job, course etc etc. I dream of a remote job like this can do my stuff and get to meet my friends and do my sport without 🍆heads around during working hours.
