While what you say is true it is addressing a real world issue women, POC and especially women of color do not have it as easy. So it is very easy to say don’t say that. But it is something that is a daily struggle. You are treated differently, expectations are different etc. it isn’t fair but this is a reality of Corp America and needs to stop. As person who is a POC, is apart of different affinity groups and in HR I can unfortunately confirm. Your comment takes away from her point she is encouraging women to not settle and know their worth and what they deserve and she is 100% correct.

Hello! If your interest is HR, I would advise getting an associates in HR, it would be more beneficial to your HR career then a degree in office admin. I completely understand coming from a poor family, I did too! Hard work pays off, just keep pushing on and you will reach your goals. If you don’t have one already, definitely create a LinkedIn account, it’s a great way to connect with recruiters looking for new HR employees. I would also recommend looking into HR roles in non-profits, they are often more willing to take a chance on someone with little to no experience compared to the the bigger companies out there. Best of luck :)

i'm near boston too! i graduated two years ago with a BS in sociology and have learned that working for nonprofits is not for me - similarly they're money hungry and underpaid employees.

What if I’m a social work major? I’m a freshman in college and I’m looking at the vast field of social Work and there’s a vast floor of pay and I’d like to make good money as most social workers get paid way less then they deserve which is a shame. I look at HR as an opportunity to achieve a good salary while making a difference in many different ways! I’d love to hear your response
@CarmenGilFraguada

I completely understand! I actually used to hire social workers & it's a shame they don't get paid better. However, if you are interested in social work, if you go into private practice, there is way more money there then non-profit or hospitals. But if you've decided on HR, I don't see why your degree in social work will be of any hindrance. Just try to land an HR internship while in college to build your resume.

I’m planning to go to college for psychology/sociology to go into HR. Do you think it was harder to find a job after college ? Is it common to have a sociology degree in HR ?

Hi there! Would having a sociology degree make it harder to get a job in HR? Is it valued the same as having a psych degree?
@chasearmstrong6851

No, I’m a Sophomore in college rn and I switched my major from Sociology to Psychology. Sociology is more of social platform, it focuses more on social problems in different cultures.

Such a great video! Very insightful- would you recommend someone that got a degree in education to go back for a degree or certificate program in HR. I have some HR experience from a internship and onboarding/hiring at my previous positions

Hello. I’m about to start my first year in college and I decided to major in HR but I’m so scared that I won’t be successful or make as much money as I would like and a lot of people have been telling me that I’m going to find it really hard to get a job so right now I’m just really confused on what to do

Hi! You're not alone in feeling that way, almost every freshman in college feels that way. My freshman year of college was horrible & I had so many doubts of what I wanted to do. The best advice I can give you is to listen to your heart. Everyone is going to have their own opinion on what you should major in and what career you should go into, but don't let them project their own insecurities onto you. There's money in HR, I've seen people hit 6 figures before 30, I'm 25 and I was only a few thousand away from hitting 6 figures. However, like any other career, you need experience and you need to be prepare to start at the bottom. You won't graduate college and make an amazing salary, but if you work hard, show companies that you're an asset to their company, you have the potential to make a good salary a few years after college.

Everyone has doubts their Freshman year of college, that's the beauty of college! It's the time to explore different options! Think of it this way, HR will ALWAYS be around. Every single company has an HR department, rather it's small or large & it's a very important component of a successful company. Find internships to gain experience, through them you will learn that you either love HR or you hate it. Better to discover that during college then after.
