Sorry to take issue with you but ESL teaching salaries in Thailand for foreigners are among the lowest in Asia and well below China, Japan and Korea. Do some online research and you'll see the average pay for new teachers is around US$850-1200 per month which isn't enough for a comfortable lifestyle. Unless you live, sleep and eat like a local you'll find it difficult to save money on that and you'll be watching your pennies (baht). Factor in entertainment/booze/women and treats/weekend trips and you'll be broke fast. You can earn more teaching at universities and private international schools but competition is fierce and you'll be competing with professional experienced teachers with an M.A. in English + CELTA certification. Thai schools prefer young teachers so if you're over 40-50 you might struggle to land a job with better-paying schools and with the recent trend towards low-cost online English tuition you might find it hard to get private students willing to pay more. It's a tiring and repetitive hamster-wheel job with few prospects for promotion, and earning peanuts you won't experience the best of what Thailand has to offer. My advice is to keep your job in the West, save your money and have a ball during holidays there. Living full-time in Thailand isn't the same as a carefree 2-3 week vacation and many expats leave disillusioned and broke. To work legally in TH you'll need a work permit and if you get caught working without one you'll be arrested, fined and deported and unless you can speak, read and write Thai your options are basically limited to teaching English and online gigs.

Very well said. This is the reality all too few vloggers ever want to talk about.
@sugoidessho
3 жыл бұрын
@@philipford6183 Vloggers produce vids to earn advertising revenue from YT so they're under pressure to continuously create new content. And to increase the number of subscribers they often use clickbait titles to increase the number of views with the result that many vloggers (I'm talking in general here) rehash old or common sense content or lure viewers in with often unrealistic/misleading titles, typically followed by a question mark. The reality is that well-paid jobs for foreigners in Thailand are as rare as the proverbial "hens teeth" and are usually reserved for specialists in IT, finance/banking, engineering etc who are transferred abroad by their company (often a multinational) with the full expat package (air fares + upscale accommodation for the family + international school for the kids + an extremely generous salary). Also, most ESL teachers working abroad typically exaggerate their earnings because they're too embarrassed/ashamed to admit that they're earning peanuts. I had the misfortune to do a stint in Japan as an ESL teacher and even at $2500 a month you'll feel poor in that country and exhausted from a very tiring dead-end job. Young hot Japanese women often refuse to date male English teachers because of their low status and income. ESL salaries are even lower in Thailand (one of the commenters here claimed he was only earning 10,000 TBH a month in the provinces) unless, as I wrote above, you can land one of the plum jobs at a Thai university or private international school, but the Average Joe (without an M.A. in Education + CELTA not one of the cheap TEFL certificates you can buy online for $50) won't be in the running for those. As others are advising here, earn your money in the West and spend it on vacation in Thailand or Philippines etc. Living in those countries on a low income is no fun, and if you're into bars then enjoy yourself in one as a punter free to choose whoever you want, not drinking yourself to an early grave and working until 4 am in one every night. Thai authorities are also tightening up the visa rules for foreigners because of too many "farang" working there illegally/online without a working visa and not paying taxes (few will admit it). If they are reported/get caught they'll be arrested, fined, deported and banned from entering TH ever again. Why take the risk?

Andy by day and Sandy at night name of a English tranvestite school teacher, who sold his self as could not make enough money as a teacher in Pattaya for years he was to be seen with punters around Pattaya what a sight he was. No money in Thailand unless you want to earn peanuts. I use to be a English teacher in Province 10, 000 Baht a month in Nonghong near Burriram, 7am start till 5pm. Full time. Worked as a Chef also in a few top hotels in Pattaya but just higher than Thai wages is all they pay with free accomadatoun and food but long hours and on call when living on the job. Foreign Estate agents ruined Pattaya , they brought stupid Western prices with them in there minds because any person can call there self's an Estate agent and set up shop. I ended up buying new motorbikes from Indian and Chinese factory's direct very cheap with 6 months credit on each machine. 6 motorcycles to a crate, 4 crates a month exporting them to UK and Iland. There called grey meaning they must have a, M, O, T after import after changing the light bulbs and speedo they where street leagle in UK. 200 cigarettes and a few other items would fill each crate all leagle then shipped out with a Indian shipping company very cheap but import duty had to be paid and VAT. Made huge money doing that job for many years self employed living in Pattaya with not one person knowing my work so no work permit or taxes in fact I've never paid tax in last 27 years any where on my world travels until this company I created with my wife. Now any person can copy that idea on a much smaller scale due to Internet, and Chinease selling direct from factory's to customers. I'm now converting shipping containers into homes in the Philippines homes that any foreign person can leagly own and can be moved any where on back of a lorry, and shipped any where in the world. Taking advantage of £6 a day wages for local tradesman for a 9 hour shift.

I have spent a little bit of time in Pattaya and have had a chat with many a expat bar owner. The one thing that each one told me about was corruption in the business. The amount of people that want a bit of the pie is unbelievable. Also the greediest are the ones from government that want back handers to leave you alone .Not for getting of Couse the local mafia that will want a bit too. You have to work out who you pay off to be best protected ,This is not an easy task as all concerned want you to think that they hold the cards and they are the answer to your problem. I would think long and hard about getting a bar. The one thing for sure is you will have plenty of story's to tell after its all over maybe that's what life is about.?

Teachers are very poorly paid! At the local international school, a teacher with appropriate qualifications is hard pushed to make even B60,000 per month. The Thai teachers are not paid that much and foreign teachers are generally 'despised'! They work long hours and have to stay away from the 'fun side' --No nightlife and or ladies! I know a few who have been sacked for 'hitting the bars'! Stay away from boats! You won't win and IF you fancy chartering then you will need a license and maybe even a skippers ticket? Hard to get but under the table ?? A Thai skipper may need to be hired but?? Then of course then there's the work permit you will need! They don't want us staying here--spending here is the object of having foreigners here! Keep Buzzin!

Work is overrated, especially in Pattaya, or indeed anywhere in Thailand (and perhaps in all of SE Asia). I have some business interests (a few fingers in a few pies, as it were) but I don't know if I'd ever want to *work* in Pattaya. Perhaps I could work for myself but even that does not seem all too overly appealing, not when you can simply have someone run it for you for anything between THB 40,000 and THB 60,000 a month. Prior to my current status, which I would tend to term 'retirement', I lived and worked in China (1 year), Hong Kong (7 years), Oman (2 years), the UAE (5 years), Singapore (1 year), and Iraq (1.5 years). I also worked, but did not live, in Qatar, Tunisia, Taiwan, and the Sudan. So I have lived and/or worked in quite a few different countries but as much as I love living in Pattaya, as I say, I don't know if I'd want to work in the city. For one thing I just can't see how I'd make time for work! I get up, have breakfast (either at home or out), go to the gym for a session on the treadmill ('runfullness') or indoor rower, shower, then go for my daily walk or cycle along the length of the Beach Road to observe all the weird and wonderful characters (social anthropology), then have a small lunch either at home or out, then have a swim in the pool, sunbathe a bit, shower, then rest and relax a bit at home, then have dinner either at home or down on Jomtien Beach, Pratmamuk, or in Pattaya proper, which I get to either on foot or by the baht bus. Then I might treat myself to a beer before going home to shower and to watch a film in bed before sleeping. I may also entertain a member of the opposite gender somewhere along the line. So, where would - or could - I find the time for work? My advice to younger guys who fancy living and working in Pattaya would be to get a job in the Arabian Gulf (KSA, the UAE, Qatar, or Kuwait), live simply and save your tax-free salary for 5 years, then buy a small business in Pattaya, or build yourself a property portfolio and live off the rent. Thailand is full of ex-pats (ex-prats?) who insist that it is better to rent than to buy in Thailand, so let these mugs give you a nice passive income.

The one thing everyone should know: As a foreigner, *without a specific Thai Work Visa*, you are not permitted to work in Thailand in any capacity, online or off. 'Digital nomad' sounds great, but it's a legal minefield and you could find yourself liable for Thai taxes if you're rumbled, possibly even facing deportation. Technically (and legally) you are not, as a foreigner, supposed to be earning a living in any manner in Thailand without a Work Visa. This is what vloggers never tell you.

Any work, whether paid or unpaid (apart from some unpaid charity work) requires the person to hold a valid work permit which covers you for working in the kingdom, and to pay income tax. This includes sitting in your bar chatting with customers, as encouraging business into the bar can be deemed as working. Many people have been caught out because they do not understand the rules in Thailand, they upset the wrong person, knowingly or unknowingly (jealousy pays a big part), and they get reported for working. This includes working online, (including teaching and KZitem) but not an online shop if you started it from overseas, provided that your customers and products are not mainly Thai.

Working in real estate has its pitfalls. Clients often try to find ways to circumvent paying sales commission. My tenant has several stories about how clients cut him out of deals at the last moment and he had no recourse. Another idea (not viable presently) would be to buy or rent (long term) several condos and rent them out on Airbnb and Booking to ST tenants. It is not actually allowed as it violates the Hotel act, but I know several people who have made a decent living from it - until Covid hit anyway. If you speak Chinese, you will do particularly well.

You are so right about the difference between Holiday and being a full time resident. I lived in Maui for 11 months. Now, I have no desire to go back and visit Hawaii. I know "too much" about it. And, as I said before, the worlds best climate, and the beauty of the Island wears off fast. I"ve lived in Las Vegas for 16 years. It's one of the lowest cost of living in the US. I like it. However, I almost never set foot on The Las Vegas Strip. You wouldn't find me "dead" gambling here, and I avoid Visitors (Tourists) like I avoid the Covid. Again, it's different when you are here on Holiday. From my Hawaiian experience I can see why Visitors "fall in love" with Thailand, and I think your advice is well given, and I certainly appreciate it.

People ask me that questions all the time. I always say its not that easy, if you are talking about good salary, good benefits, good employers etc. And, they always reply back, but you’ve worked a ton the last 7 years in Thailand are regularly offered positions & projects. That is true, but that is do to the connections i already made in Asia many years before. I always felt my situation wasn’t necessary the norm.

I was curious about respectable jobs for females. My girlfriend from Indonesia plans to come there to live with me. She was hoping to find some work for extra spending money for herself. I have suggested teaching English online as a non native English speaker. She speaks English very well. Her writing though needs work. I know she's cooked and sold food in Indonesia. I thought of that as a possibility as maybe a street vendor. But it would be great to have other options and ideas.

I was brought up in my parents bar, granted the hours weren't as silly as Pattaya bars but the principle was the same. I did seriously consider the bar route at one point but it would be a disaster for me. I lack self control and I know it wouldn't be long before I was in trouble. The number one thing for people to keep in mind with running a bar is you need to love it. Its not a path to something but the endgame itself.

I worked in thailand as a software engineer. It's actually not easy to get work because the thai companies dont want to hire if they see you earning too much back home. Theres only a few international companies that like hiring foreigners. It's much easier to work remotely now as a software engineer and keep it under the radar.

A lot of people have already commented on "Right turn Clyde!" I am 48 and "Any Which Way but Loose" was one of the first movies I can remember having watched in the theater. The first movie I can remember is probably "Jaws" for what it is worth... I was only a bit over 2 years old, but I can remember seeing it. Jaws, Any Which Way but Loose, and Grease are my earliest filmories.

The digital side of things are much better, on your terms and of course the freedom is there to enjoy everything you are there for. I don't start work until 20:30 in the evening in Thailand, sometimes my day is done within an hour and its straight off to Walking Street. Can't wait for those days to return in the next few months.

How about doing a vlog on the jobs you are not allowed to do, as those who live here are usually aware of what we can and cannot do. It is the wider audience who will not be aware of these, taxi driver for example or agriculture/building laboring?

I think you could make a buck counseling Anglos who just had their heart broken by a Thai Bar Girl. Knock a sense of reality into their head. You would have to work "under the table" and keep a low profile, but I think you could supply a needed service to fools who think Thailand is crawling with the Girl from the Walking Pineapple. Make friends with key hotel managers and provide them a "kick back" and you'll be booked in no time.

Work permit situation is a bit dicey in Thailand I've always thought, along with the penalties for working without one. I have an AEP for the Philippines which are not easy to get, but mine lasts for 5 years, it's on the back of an SIRV which I have had for several years now and lasts indefinitely as long as I continue to meet the criteria. Many of the Digital "Nomads" we see don't earn a lot, but it an accessible way of getting into a business environment and as you say, explore the avenues and pick the one that works. Bar work is a hard choice. I wouldn't work in a bar in the UK, so why would I want to work in one in Thailand?. I think if I needed to work in Thailand, I'd choose something which suits my skillset, rather than attempt to enter a different industry which I might fail miserably at.
