Virtual reality has incredible potential to engage clients and to communicate the experiential qualities of spaces before they are built. VR is emerging as a collaborative and accessible tool that engages diverse user groups in generating feedback in the early stages of design. To test VR as a tool for design collaboration, VMDO hosted a VR Workshop focused on the design of UVA’s new Student Health and Wellness Center - an interdisciplinary health facility emphasizing wellness and preventive healthcare, slated to open in 2021. Led by architect Lauren Shirley, this is the story of a full-day workshop exploring the power of VR within VMDO's collaborative design process. As Principal Joe Celentano says, “VR could be a breakthrough tool that supports how we collaborate with our clients, partners, and stakeholders to help people engage with virtual spaces in the early phases of design.”
