My family had a bit of a record at the mine where we worked. My grandfather helped sink it in 1914, and worked there until 1950, my father started in 1930, worked there 47 years an retired in 1977,his two brothers started there in the late 1930s and retired in the early 80s, I started there in 1963 and left in 1989 when Thatchers axe fell , and I can safely say that I’ve never worked with a more caring workforce than the miners. May they ALWAYS be remembered

My son still does.....These guys are true heroes , like my family and the spouses , mother's , fathers of these men also are heroes. We go tthrough it with them , our heatts , fears and love go along with our men, brothers, fathers, sons and daughters who work underground.....Mining is not for the faint of heart..... Coal mines are the worst and alllll the American men who work underground have my heart also..... The song Coal Miner's Daughter by Loretta Lynn we can allll relate to ... God bless Loretta and Rita McNeil for having sung this song also...........Thank you for this video..

Amen -- my Great Grandfather and Great Uncle Alec Bauld & Thomas Bauld respecively - dug coal in Donibristle mine and survived for 28hrs (Aug 26, 1901) buried to their armpits in peat mud after the peat bog burst the ceiling and flooded the mine- 8 men perished- 4 coal men and 4 rescuers. On the 29th hour as the last man before Alec was pulled out the mine subsided again trapping Alec and two of the rescuers for an additional 32hrs .. Alec was the only man brought out on a stretcher but upon seeing the reporters, got off the stretcher and walked into the infirmary. His only comment was " I would not like to relive that again" .. so yah Hard and Brave Men .. Raise a Glass -- Here's to you. Slainte .

Cape Breton not withstanding, How about the rest of the miners and mining operations throughout the world! I mined Zinc in New Jersey. What of the coal miners in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky. Not to forget Mining in Wales, Cornwall, Scotland, And Germany, Czheckolslavakia SP, sulphur mines in Sicily and so on. I know I'm leaving a lot of places out. There are very few countries that have no mineral deposits worth mining. Miners are every where! Terry

Mined underground 31 years. All hard rock, not coal. And every time I listen to this song, I tear up. Miners work hard, face danger every day if they don’t work safely but I never knew a miner who hated his job. The work is hard, the equipment such as jackleg and stoper drills are heavy and man handled. Thankfully today the machinery is huge and hydraulic but the man held drills are still used.

Many, many years ago, I was privileged to see the Men of the Deeps perform live at the opening ceremony of "Centre 200", an arena in Sydney, NS. I visited Blantyre, Scotland 3 weeks ago and saw the monument to 200 plus miners and boys who died in an underground fire on 22nd October 1877. They had 3 feet headroom to get out and the fire destroyed the water pumps and they drowned. RIP.
