Hey taylor, part of rhe fun of an older truck is the working on them. Ive got a 1964 F100 I've been working on for rhe last two years. When I bought the truck the original engine and transmission were long gone. I ended up with 351M from a 78 truck. Ive been driving the truck for over a year but recently its developed a problem under acceleration. Ive had that darn fuel pump off twice so i know the pain!:) When my grandkids ask me how i know so much i explain to them its because of all the times i messed up! If you learn something its not a failure! Dont stop trying!

Hey Taylor, I wondered what the truck was in your avatar. Being a fan of the blue oval, I could tell it was a Ford and narrowed it down to a 70’s model. Couldn’t tell which year though. Awesome trucks. I have a ‘74 one ton dually with 390 auto and a ‘77 high boy 4x4 with a 460 4 speed. ‘77 was the last year of the high boy. Also have a ‘79 bronco 4x4 with a 351m and a 4 speed I affectionately call “bronczilla”. Did I mention I like old Fords? Anyway, the fuel system is pretty simple. With your determination and lack of fear of getting greasy or breaking a nail you’ll figure it out. Love the dairy vlogs but how about more on your truck adventures. Thanks for the ride along.

Best way to check a fuel pump is remove the fuel line where it goes into the filter. Hold the line in a fuel can or clean bottle. Have someone crank it. Should get a solid stream of fuel. If not most likely a bad pump BUT on these old vehicles I've had to drop the fuel tank often. The tank has a sock or in tank filter that can become partially plugged. I tend to just cut them off and add a near tank inline filter. Like the one you showed in the engine compartment. Cool truck 👍

My old ford sat in a familys hay barn for 30 years as an heirloom. Mice could have put a "no occupancy" sign on it, and the barn swallows were there homeland security. Old trucks never let ya have things easy. I essentially replaced my whole fuel system with modern components more friendly to todays pump gas.

Hi taylor! Thats one sweet 74! That feul filter should be befire the feul pump! Also it could of been cause were thr filter was could of clogged the pump and would make it not pump rite! Also check your timing cause if its off wont star or run right! And take one of your emerboards for your finger nails and use it to clean your pionts and your rotor and cap well helps lots also clean your wire connection ( all of them) a bad ground can cause a lot of issues! Make sure your spark plug wire are good and no wite are crossed and that they are fasten rite! And as far as that transmission you have start out in second gear! 1st in that year is a drep reduction / granny gear!!

Hiya Tay, Good video, thank you. There is an old saying for when you check something like this. This is not meant to be personal to you, but it's KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid; I would replace the fuel line and filter before you do anything else. How easy it is to block a fuel line on an older engine always amazes me. I'm sure you can find a few thousand YT videos on spraying or doing up the truck. Stay safe, Steve...

It's a lot of work, but dropping the tank, flushing it out, installing a new pickup sock, blow out/replace the fuel lines, add a new filter, can save long term headaches, eliminate one more no-start cause.

The fun of working on older vehicles. If it is not the fuel filter. Use a small gas can and run a hose to the fuel pump and then try it if that works you have an issue before the pump if there’s no change suspect the pump. newer fuels will eat the diaphragm in the pump. Loved the chickens in the background. Wish you the best with your project.

It could be the spring or diafram is worn out in the old pump. Make sure you got fuel by checking the gauge and knocking on the fuel tank. Sometimes the gauge don't work intermittently. It looks like you installed the pump right except for you didn't use RTV on both sides of the gasket.

It's probably the fuel pump. Usually they will give a core exchange if you can't find a rebuild kit for it to rebuild yourself take the old one to the parts store to exchange for rebuilt or new one. Probably that old of one they probably are rebuilt ones at the part store you will to check to see if they have one first before you go there.

Do you know for certain it's a fuel related issue? Have you tried putting a tiny amount of gas in the carb to see if it starts? A truck that age could have a clogged or rusted out fuel line going to the tank, if the pump is good it won't be able to pull fuel up to the carb. Did any fuel come out of the line to the pump when you took it off? It should have. I noticed that in line filter by the carb was filthy.There could be rust in the tank too, that's where a clear in line filter between tank and pump comes in handy. Hope this helps 👍

It could be the fuel pump is warn out. The armature rides and camshaft and inside of it there is a diafram that moves up and down that pumps the fuel. Usually it is a crack in the diafram. It is good to change the fuel filter after changing the fuel pump.
@larrycurts710

Just saying, if the diaphragm in the fuel pump has a hole in it, check to make that gasoline didn’t get in the crankcase. Somewhere’s in this post I believe you said the truck was a 1974. 351M didn’t show up in the F series truck until 1977, so, you will likely have to order a fuel pump from the engine information on the valve cover. Something else that I noticed, you need a rad shroud. Without it, the truck will overheat.

You commented that your truck is a 1974 with a 351M. The 351M didn’t show up in the F series trucks until 1977, so if you are ordering parts, either take the old part with you., or get the information off the valve cover sticker.(if it’s still there). I also noticed that you need a rad shroud, or it will heat up. The grille is from a 1976 or 77. Us old Ford notices these things.

If not take suction line off of fuel pump and see if you can blow back to the tank with gas filler cap off. If you use compressed air, use low pressure. Make sure you have a clear path for the fuel from the tank to the pump. Stay safe and God bless you and yours !!! Eddy

Knock on the bottom of the fuel tank like it is a door, sometimes the wiring is no good the gauge at the top of fuel the wiring might be corroded or something. Also the float in the older vehicles ride on a twisted flat rod and can get stuck and give false rating to the fuel tank gauge.
