Always great to watch the Master in action. Dr. Saunders in surgery in room 2. Root surgery and pruning. Students bring pencil and paper to take notes. Great video.

In spring there is a systemic insecticide for the emerald ash borer that should be applied in spring for a more effective control called: imidacloprid that is applied as a soil drench. There is granular forms sold also. It is available to consumers. Just a thought incase it is sold in Canada. Might help some old trees that are not infected.

Imidaclopid effects honey bees. Some people care about that Some do not. I would do it for a bonsai tree but probably not a standing tree.

@@chasingthefish9042Great thoughts. There is an organic control. Hope this helps. $635/bottle: Entrust SC Naturalyte Insect Control This organic liquid provides outstanding control for a lengthy list of crop pests and can be used on nearly any type of plant you can think of. Entrust SC Naturalyte Insect Control contains the naturally occurring soil bacterium, spinosad, in a much higher percentage (22.5%) than comparable spinosad insecticides. With this high percentage of active ingredient, you will have unchallenged control of targeted pests in a quick knockdown spray with residual benefits. Easy-to-use liquid formulation makes measuring and mixing a breeze Works on contact and by ingestion Can be used on row crops, and in orchards, nurseries and greenhouses Contains spinosad (a Group 5 insecticide) derived from the fermentation of Saccharopolyspora spinose Will not be distributed to other parts of the plant after foliar application Does not persist in the environment; any overspray or residues on foliage will breakdown within days to weeks Recommended for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Programs Relatively low toxicity to nontarget organisms (including beneficials), but do not apply to blooming, pollen-shedding or nectar-producing parts of plants if bees may forage on the plants within 3 hours of treatment

The city ash trees in my neighborhood always end up with the main trunk splitting into 2, looking like a tuning fork. So I'd say this tree is true to its natural form. Also, the root pruning went way further than I anticipated. It's always my favorite to see you work on native ontario trees. Best of luck to you Nigel.

I believe the damage is caused by the borers, which eat away the cambium layer making it impossible for the sap to flow up, effectively choking the tree off.

Wow! Your impressive success rate inspires courage when it comes to root pruning. Today I repotted four newly acquired young American beech. You have me convinced to start them out properly and not let the roots become a tangled mess.

Ash trees make wonderful bonsai and air layer easy even thick trunks. I did one in a already fissured and crackly bark and took off.

GASP!! You'd think we'd be used to those big prunes by now! Oh boy! That is a gnarly tree! I wonder if it will get bark like the black ash I have here? I want to try one as Bonsai. None of my seeds came up. I might look for some seedlings on my property.

The native UK ash trees (Fraxinus excelsior) are impacted by ash dieback. Aparently the diease is uttery devastating, affecting some 7/10 trees based on my own research. The funny/sad part is I know some folk who made much-ado about the fact "mountain ash" (rowan) trees are unaffected. but these people don't realise that mountain ash trees are actually part of a different family- sorbus aucuparia. The ash tree is the same family as the north american white ash... which is being impacted by this boar. If it helps at all, I did hear that the boar mostly burrows under the bark. So if you ever chop down an ash tree, you must strip the tree of it's bark, not leave it with the bark on in a forest. Reason being dead trees get infected with the boar and then spread it to nearby healthy trees. Which is why logging can have a pretty big impact on the emerald ash boar. Yours could get infected, but based on my knowledge I think it's unlikely? Time will tell

Yes, I saw quite a few dead Ash trees in the forest today, the bark had peeled off and you could see the marks left by the borers. Thanks, great info!!!

@TheBonsaiZone Nigel, are you taking any precautions with that tree regarding freezing temps after the re-pot, or is it fine to place it right back where it was?

Hi Nigel, great video, is there a reason other than preference/style why you would not leave that lower branch as a jin? Can leaving deadwood on certain deciduous trees cause more dieback into the tree?

Couldn’t you style it to look like a typical bonsai and confuse the borers, or take another tree and style it as an ash? 😜
