Getting a hide tomorrow and been wondering how to scrape it since it's cold and snowy out. This video solved the problem; inside on the floor with my scraper and holy crap coffee it will be. Awesome info, thanks jnull0. Hope things are going well out your way!

Good stuff John, My Dad's a master plumber and if you want to save a little work and your hacksaw blade you can get a PVC cutter on Amazon for about $12, it looks like a big pair of pliers that ratchets down on the pipe and leaves a smooth even cut

After working the hide, try rubbing glycerin on it. It will make it softer than a baby's...........you can get glycerin at any drug store. I've taken hides that were stiff for years and this made them blanket soft.

Alum tanning tightens the pores in the hide so the hair will not fall out. You can used a dozen egg yolks to tan the hide

Great video reminds me when I used to to hides, when I wanted to soften them when they were dry I use to place them over a railing like the one you hang the hide over to start cutting around the outside. Then I would see saw the hide back and forth with the flesh side down that way it soften anyway all good.

You can preserve the hide with 20 mule team borax and salt. Salt will draw the moisture out and the borax will preserve it. If you want a soft hide after you work it. use neets foot oil and work it over a edge rough side down.
