"Done is better than perfect" is a quote that really helped me out. I also had to adjust the scope of some projects. Doing a "practice run" where the results don't matter before diving into a big project helps ease me into the groove. Just bought 3DCoat myself. I'm really interested in the retopo and uv tools, but will go through tutorials on the entire software package. Nice to see a fellow NJ creative on the interwebs. And I agree about ZBrush's interface. I'm looking for every excuse to use either 3DCoat or Blender for sculpting. Performance isn't quite there in those programs yet.

Yes ! That's a great old saying William and one that I agree with 100% !!! I hope you enjoy working with 3DCoat, it's a very unique software application with a lot of hidden potential. To be honest with you, I think that the retopo tools are fantastic (very easy to use) and it's been my goto app for that purpose for many years. BTW - I think we might live in the same town...we might be neighbors, how crazy is that! I'm very pleased to meet you and thanks for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it.

Hi, Joe! You don't have to have all of the panels open - You can close some of them. The close button on the panels is really tiny, though! You can also right-click on the brushes you don't want to see and click "Hide tool". Once you close everything you don't want to see, go to the Window menu and choose "Store this page layout". You can always restore things in the Window menu and clicking "Reset this page to default". Hope this helps, from one recovering perfectionist to another!

Hi Cindy, thank you so much for the kind and helpful comment. I agree with you and this is actually very good advice and something I should definitely do to improve my user experience. I hope I didn't give the impression that I don't like 3D Coat because I really do think it's a wonderful and unique application. Thanks again, I'm going to customize my interface to suit my style as you suggest. Many thanks ! Cheers, J

its crazy how you can learn so much about these programs over time. thats neat i didnt know you could hide brushes as well. im constantly scrolling them. sometimes i use the space bar brush menu but thats overwhelming too in a way. the hot bar at the top of that helps a bit. thanks for the comment. there are lots of panels in coat that panels menu is long. a quick faves on a hot key for menus would be interesting.

@@marsmotion -- Absolutely! My major gripe with 3DC at the moment is that you simply can't create your own floating toolbar and populate with whatever brushes you use most often. I really don't need to see a hundred brushes when I probably use less 10 or less at most. Maybe it's possible and I'm missing something but so far I've not found a way to do this.

something that got me early in coating was i would close the app before it finished saving a model. i turned off make zip file and so had no idea when it was done saving. so id open it up and only some of the objects would be there. in zb they show you a save bar progressing. other than the zip save which shows if you dont have that zip option on save checked you get zero feedback. cont.... having some coat upgrades break features even in stable builds, like hdr rotation in one build a bit back took me as a wild thing to break. now i read the update comments and that happens way more than it should in paid software. they really need to qa or quality assure bug test before releases. they use their user community to bug test. there are lots of little things, for me as a game artist i want to have custom base cage bake settings per retopo object remembered instead of one generic for all models. sure you can paint the cage in and out but thats not enough and can be very tedious to do. so i use marmoset which has better cage per object options and better AO calc as well. so using coat is like flying in a prototype aircraft instead of an airliner. its got some majorly cool things as well that i wish other programs had like voxhide for one. like also the whole other rooms to work in. try retopo and uv in zb oye and youll soon see yes it can be done but its far less robust. zbs materials ive always found maddening as well. so complex and obtuse to have that 2.5 d thing going on, they are all fake not real 3d. very confusing. so coat is great and ive actually left zb behind bc of the interface its just too painful and i like actual 3d instead of faked out 3d. but yeah coat has some real sharp edges to it.

100% ! I agree completely. I can't begin to tell you the pain I went through with ZB at first. I've been using ZB since the day it was introduced and I'm not going to lie for a fair number of years I didn't use it much simply out of pure frustration. I finally bit the bullet an decided to learn it despite the interface and after some time and considerable mental pain I was able to move past it. These days I have a love/hate relationship with ZB. Honestly I think it's a wonderful tool, very powerful and capable. That said, the workflow is absolutely bonkers and the interface is bloody mess. Luckily customization is easy so you can pretty much tailor things to your personal preference otherwise I probably would not bother with it. The main reason I use ZB more than anything else is because I enjoy the feel and consistency of the brushes... they just feel more natural to me overall. Still 3DC has some killer tools and it's saved my backside on more than a few occasions. So, I continue to use ZB, 3DC and Blender.... whatever gets the job done ! 🙂
