I was at the first DTWC in 1981. Watched Jim Dunn come from the back of the B main to make the feature. Saw him come from the rear to win the feature. Went back again a few years later to witness another great race. I"ve been to many great dirt tracks since then including the World 100 several times. Nothing compares to the Pennsboro atmosphere. It's a six hour drive from home but I would go back if they raced there again.

Believe it or not , Freddy Smith and Mike Duval was from same general area and had many races with each other on the Cherokee speedway which was the local track for both of them in their earlier racing days !

yep. I'm from Gastonia and during my youth I watched them at Cherokeespeedway on one night and at the the metrolina fairgrounds track the next near Charlotte. My mother taught Mike in school in Gaffney. I remember these guys very well. Those were the days

The DTWC is ‘not’ SAME 💯 laps race, as the WORLD 100 race. This race is Carl Short’s race at Pennsboro, WV,… The WORLD 100 is Earl Baltes race at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, OHIO.

$100 halfway bonus from the Mountaineer restaurant, we loved that place and this track! I made that trip for a few years in the mid 90s. We'd stay at the Holiday Inn up the mountain above the Mountaineer and had breakfast there every morning. This was better than Daytona for me! We'd see guys like Stuhler, Eckert, Franklin and Durborow a few times a year at my local track, plus we had STARS races for a few years. But Pennsboro is where i got to see Boggs, Bloomer, Duvall, Moyer, Swartz, plus all off the top regional drivers across the country for the 1st time. This race was the perfect time of year to be up in the mountains and we had a blast every year! Glad they're working on bringing the track back, but it won't be the same. Not gonna see 150+ drivers show up anymore. That was the best part to me, seeing what drivers who i had never seen before would show up.

@@pauleyplay I was a kid when I met him but he was a super nice guy! Potomac is my home track, use to work there doing random jobs (selling programs, running the score board) while my uncle announced there. We'd always get there super early and I remember sitting in the tower and seeing that Raye Vest hauler pull in and I'd run right down to the pits. Same with Franklin, those 2 always put on a show when they came down.

@Lucas Oldaker I guess they know but no one’s willing to put the money and time into it. Fact is it’s a big track with a lot of structural oddities and it’d cost a fortune to have large late model and modified events there again.

I smiled when the announcer mentioned the half-way $100 bonus to the leader. Then realized $100 in 1991 would buy a full fuel cell of methanol with enough left over foe tear- offs & a new air filter.😑
