They Love it. I have large breed dogs. I don't know how, why or when, but I got into the habit of cupping my hand and thumping or drumming their sides. It sounds like a drum and their reaction surprised me. They started waiting for me to get to this part of our greeting. I think because it resonates within their chest. I don't slap the hem, just cup my hand and drum them. If I don't, they linger and wait for me to put down whatever is in my hands. I just rescued a starving hound puppy. He has been beaten, which is always heartbreaking. It took him several days to unclamp his tail from his belly. I wited for him to start selling my attention because I knew that if he had that kind of reaction, he was over the first hurdle. I was afraid to drum him because I was afraid that he might see my hand as a sign of abuse. But when I drum them my hand never gets more than about an inch away from their sides so, on Day 2 when I was really trying to get him to relax and except physical affection I started to drum on him slowly and almost quietly. The change in him was remarkable. It was as if, him feeling my hand and feeling the wave of the cupping through his body but having no pain associated with the touch kind of sank in the fact that he no longer has to fear. I knew that my dogs liked it but I didn't realize the effect that it would have on a timid dog. The waves going through their chest seem to let them feel my affection rather than just a skin deep stroke or gentle pat

This was the speed event of the competition so only speed matters and not finesse so the horse probably was momentarily confused or trying to get ahead of the rider because he knows the course or at least the elements of the course and he knows he's supposed to do it as quickly as possible. The other half of this sport is the technical event where time isn't important and instead the pair is judged on accuracy, balance, and harmony. Watch this pair do that event and I'll bet the horse will look much calmer and confident. People tend to prefer watching the speed event because it's more impressive to the average viewer so that's mostly what pops up on KZitem. Hope this helps, it's a great sport and id love to try it sometime as a dressage rider.

Too much pumping, kicking and jerking for my liking. Horse seems harried and stressed. I think the fact that this is timed is the problem... All of these maneuvers are wonderful training for a horse but when rushed at speed it seems to lose authenticity and just becomes about the prize. I have seen much better examples of working eq elsewhere with calm horses and poised riders who don't fling their bodies in all directions like a barrel racer. All that to say, this is a wonderful horse, obviously very well trained.

This is tradition Portuguese equitation so normally we use Lusitano horses, that were originally bred for bullfighting but are now mainly used for dressage. I do agree that a reining horse would probably be more loose and flexible, and that makes sense since some of the obstacles used for American disciplines are similar to these but I’ve never seen anyone use one in Portugal for portuguese equitation.

A great majority of barrel racers couldn't do this because their horses are kicked and spurred in a straight line and yanked around a barrel. Most of them lack any finesse or flexibility because they don't bother to teach their horses anything except speed and that's because most of them don't really know how to ride beyond kick to start and pull to stop. Yes, there are some good barrel racers who do, and those are the ones that make it to the top but the majority of them are back yard arses that are just abusing the heck out of their horses and calling it 'fun' or 'gymkhana'.
