🦒 World Giraffe Day falls on 21 June 🦒
Whilst the world's tallest mammal may be one of the most iconic and unique with their marvelous adaptions, sadly, Giraffe numbers have declined by 40% over the last 30 years due to habitat encroachment, snares, civil unrest, and poaching, with the wild population now estimated at less than 117,000.
World Giraffe Day was initiated by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF), an organisation dedicated to raising awareness and support to stop the silent extinction of Giraffe. We proudly support the GCF to help fund wildlife veterinarian training in Namibia to further their incredible Giraffe conservation management efforts.
You can also make a difference for Giraffe by purchasing Beads for Wildlife products. These handcrafted beadworks provide a reliable income for over 800 women across Northern Kenya, empowering them with a wildlife-friendly income stream and reduces human-wildlife conflict. All profits go directly to the artists to support them, their families, communities, and local wildlife. You can purchase a Beads For Wildlife product during your next visit to Taronga or from our online store at zooshop.tarong...
Stop in to meet our Giraffe herd and learn more about their plight in the wild and conservation status at the daily 10:40am Giraffe Keeper Talk or come eye-to-eye with the tower at the Giraffe Encounter at 1:30pm daily.
