How do we make menopause more inclusive? Watch the debate and sign our petition below to allow ALL women to access the care they need
For World Menopause Day 2022 Noon Founder Eleanor Mills hosted a panel discussion on noon.org.uk to discuss how we broaden the conversation out so having a menopause is not seen as the preserve of rich white women.
A lively discussion ensued with our amazing panel which included Carolyn Harris MP (parliamentary menopause warrior who was told the other day by shopworkers in her Swansea East constituency ‘Aren’t you posh having a menopause!’), Kate Muir (the producer of the Davina McCall Channel 4 Documentary) Yasmin Alibhai Brown (first black female columnist in UK newspapers) Anita Powell (community menopause nurse and founder of Black Women in Menopause) Jennifer Howze (Editorial Director of Netmums), Andrea Berchowitz (Founder of Vira Health and Stellar App, who is using tech to empower women to get better treatment) and Tina Backhouse, General Manager of Theramex (tireless campaigner for improvements in women’s health).
The debate was moving and wide ranging, covering everything from how in some south Asian communities there aren’t even words for menopause, to the trouble people have accessing treatment and the scourge the lack of conversation and information has inflicted on generations of women. Suicide in women peaks during the menopause years; the misery of untreated symptoms destroys relationships and families.
The panel concluded that the best way for ALL women to get fair treatment (currently women in the most deprived areas of Britain get prescribed HRT at only HALF the rate of those in the richest areas) is to make menopause a QOF - which means ALL women would be invited by their GP for a consultation when the reach the age of 45. Thus ensuring that EVERY woman gets the information she needs and that ALL doctors are trained in menopause (currently it is not mandatory for GPs to learn about menopause when are at medical school).
If menopause was a QOF this would change. To sign the parliamentary petition supported by all our panellists to create fairness in menopause provision click this link petition.parliament.uk/petiti... - if we get 100k signatures then MPs HAVE to debate it in parliament. The future is in your hands. Thanks so much
