The part people don't remember about Taffy 3, is those DD's and DE's did exactly what you were doing with that St' Louis, Jiggles. They immediately started laying smoke, and beginning torpedo runs, with the DD's using their Mark 37 radar fire control system to shoot from within the smoke at the Japanese ships

The other thing people wouldn't think about if they try to use Taffy 3 as an example of destroyers and destroyer escorts fighting cruisers and battleships is the fact that the DDs and DEs got their asses royally beat by the ships that attacked them. They just fought so unbelievably hard that the admiral in charge of the Japanese fleet thought he had run into Halsey's main force, panicked, and withdrew. It's one of the great "what if?" moments of World War 2-if the Center Force had pressed their attack and rolled right over Taffy 3 the entire US invasion and support fleet was just to the south and it would have been a massive slaughter, since Taffy 3 was literally the only thing standing in the Center Force's way. It could very well have been a turning point in the Pacific war in Japan's favor.

@TheKodiakalpha
9 жыл бұрын
thelastholdout It might have been a setback, but the outcome of the war was already decided. The Japanese fleet barely had enough fuel to make it home, and very little to sortie again. They had effectively no carrier borne aircraft left, or carriers for that matter. While Halsey did take the bait, he did destroy what was left of Japan's fleet carriers in the battle. Further, the Seventh Fleet Support Force of 6 battleships and 8 cruisers, plus destroyers, while too far from Taffy 3 to help, was not that far from the landings at Leyte after destroying the Japanese Southern Force in Surigao Straight. If Center Force had broken through and attacked the landings they would have possibly destroyed some of the transports (already unloaded) before being hit by the Seventh Fleet plus the roughly 350 aircraft from Taffy 1 and Taffy 2, equivalent to 3 or four fleet carriers worth of air power. This in no wise detracts from the courage of Taffy 3's escorts, or their accomplishment at holding the Japanese fleet at bay and saving most of the escort carriers. It is just that the outcome of the battle did not change the outcome of the war.
@thelastholdout
9 жыл бұрын
TheKodiakalpha You might be right; I'm always just fascinated by visions of alternate history. For instance, if the relief fleet steaming toward Wake Island hadn't turned around one day before getting there, would Wake Island have held? Would holding Wake Island have enabled the Allies to keep the Philippines? If so, would that have shortened the outcome of the war by a year or two?

Loving these ship reviews with all of the history stuff woven in Jingles, learning while relaxing is the bomb. I'm not sure why people have been hating on the murican DDs, I prefer them to the Japanese DDs in beta. While the class-wide DD nerfing from alpha to beta was understandable, the Japanese were turned into glass torp cannons. Still amazing boats in the hands of a good torp gunner, but not as all-round fun as the muricans.

Another great tactic for destroyers is to wait somewhere or use the islands to get close to another ship, pop smoke, stop the ship and wait. If you don't move, don't fire your guns and just hold on, especially at later tiers most people won't fire their guns since they don't wan't the long reload. If you do that until they are within lethal range (around 6km) you put out torpedoes and then just high-tail it out of there. That guarantees at least 1 kill almost every time. American destroyers have another advantage at that tactic, if you are caught out by another destroyer or low-tier cruiser (high tier cruisers 1-shot you anyways) you can almost always out-dps them.

Rian DeBairead Not just one shell, she was shot to pieces " they concentrated fire on her rather than the fleeing carriers. The Johnston was hit so many times that one survivor recalled "they couldn't patch holes fast enough to keep her afloat."" "As a destroyer from the opposing fleet cruised slowly by, Robert Billie and several other crewmen watched as the Japanese captain saluted the sinking Johnston." Not quite a heavy cruiser, but certainly a mark of respect from an enemy for fighting so fiercely against overwhelming numbers and firepower, along with the Hoel, Samuel B Roberts and Heermann, who was the only one to survive, from the destroyer screen.

This video in particular, showing how deadly torpedoes are in game, should be all the evidence needed to explain why, to those who STILL don't understand, as to why submarines are not going to be included in the game - a totally invisible ship, that you wouldn't know was there, until your torpedo warning kicked in, with no time to maneuver. Even with very slow speed submerged, imagine one or two subs positioned in amongst the islands and choke points on some of those maps - it would be absolute slaughter. Further proof of the saying we had in the submarine service - "There are only two types of ships in the world - submarines - and targets."

Production and spread[edit] Robert Whitehead (right) invented the modern self-propelled torpedo in 1866. Pictured examining a battered test torpedo in Rijeka c.1875. After the Austrian government decided to invest in the invention, Whitehead started the first torpedo factory in Fiume. In 1870, he improved the devices to travel up to approximately 1,000 yd (910 m) at a speed of up to 6 kn (11 km/h), and by 1881 the factory was exporting torpedoes to ten other countries. The torpedo was powered by compressed air and had an explosive charge of gun-cotton.[3] Whitehead went on to develop more efficient devices, demonstrating torpedoes capable of 18 kn (33 km/h) in 1876, 24 kn (44 km/h) in 1886, and, finally, 30 kn (56 km/h) in 1890. Royal Navy representatives visited Fiume for a demonstration in late 1869, and in 1870 a batch of torpedoes was ordered. In 1871, the British Admiralty paid Whitehead £15,000 for certain of his developments and production started at the Royal Laboratories in Woolwich the following year. In 1893, RN torpedo production was transferred to the Royal Gun Factory. The British later established a Torpedo Experimental Establishment at HMS Vernon and a production facility at the Royal Naval Torpedo Factory, Greenock in 1910. These are now closed. The Nordenfelt-class Ottoman submarine Abdülhamid (1886) was the first submarine in history to fire a torpedo while submerged. Whitehead opened a new factory near Portland Harbour, England in 1890, which continued making torpedoes until the end of the Second World War. Because orders from the RN were not as large as expected, torpedoes were mostly exported. A series of devices was produced at Fiume, with diameters from 14 in (36 cm) upward. The largest Whitehead torpedo was 18 in (46 cm) in diameter and 19 ft (5.8 m) long, made of polished steel or phosphor-bronze, with a 200-pound (91 kg) gun-cotton warhead. It was propelled by a three-cylinder Brotherhood engine, using compressed air at around 1,300 psi (9.0 MPa) and driving two contra-rotating propellers, and was designed to self-regulate its course and depth as far as possible. By 1881, nearly 1500 torpedoes had been produced. Whitehead also opened a factory at St Tropez in 1890 that exported torpedoes to Brazil, Holland, Turkey and Greece. Whitehead purchased rights to the gyroscope of Ludwig Obry in 1888 but it was not sufficiently accurate, so in 1890 he purchased a better design to improve control of his designs, which came to be called the "Devil's Device". The firm of L. Schwartzkopff in Germany also produced torpedoes and exported them to Russia, Japan and Spain. In 1885, Britain ordered a batch of 50 as torpedo production at home and at Fiume could not meet demand. By WW1, Whitehead's torpedo remained a worldwide success, and his company was able to maintain a monopoly on torpedo production. By that point, his torpedo had grown to a diameter of 18 inches with a maximum speed of 30.5 knots with a warhead weighing 170 pounds. Whitehead faced competition from the American Lieutenant Commander John A. Howell, whose own design, driven by a flywheel, was simpler and cheaper. It was produced from 1885 to 1895, and it ran straight, leaving no wake. A Torpedo Test Station was set up on Rhode Island in 1870. The Howell torpedo was the only USN model until Whitehead torpedoes produced by Bliss and Williams entered service in 1894. Five varieties were produced, all 18 in (46 cm) diameter. The United States Navy started using the Whitehead torpedo in 1892 after an American company, E.W. Bliss, secured manufacturing rights.[4] MY HOME TOWN!!! Rijeka..

Jingles, do you play co-op after you reach random battle rank? I hope that co-op will remain in the game when it goes live.
