The sacred work "Alliluya" (Hallelujah) by Anton Viskov is the composer's musical gift to the Yale Russian Chorus in honor of its 70th anniversary! Mr. Viskov dedicated this beautiful work to the Chorus with the following words:
"In the sound of the Yale Russian Chorus, I hear the voices of all generations of Russian singers who have sung and praised the Lord in different historical eras. Therefore, I would like to create a piece of music that reflects the collective image of the large Russian choir. In this connection it seemed to me justified to turn to the genre of old Russian cantos, which not only unites various branches of Slavonic music, but also extends both deep roots into the past and fruitful shoots into the future of national choral art. I have used the typical harmonic and melodic turns of ancient Slavic chant and, of course, heard the mighty sound of the Yale Russian Chorus in an attempt to create a certain gathering symbol of national song-making. After all, the Yale Russian Chorus, in honor of whose anniversary this work was written, is just such a symbol."
Anton Olegovich Viskov is a composer, host of musical and literary programs, music educator and publicist, musicologist and textologist. Member of the Composers' Union of Moscow, the Cinematographer's Union of Russia, the Russian Authors' Society. Corresponding member of the International Academy of Creativity. Honored Culture Worker of the Russian Federation. Expert and jury member of the Patriarchal International Festival "Hymns of the Christian World". Composer of the educational TV channel "Joy is Mine", the Center of Cultural Initiatives "Sreteniye". Art Director and composer of the Moscow choral ensemble of sacred music "Blagovest". Friends, welcome to our channel!
The Yale Russian Chorus is the oldest singing group in the New World dedicated to the music of Russia and nearby countries. The YRC was founded 1953 at the height of the Cold War. Founders: Denis Mickiewicz and George Litton.
Singers join while students at Yale, and many stay active throughout their lives. Every year or so we hold a major concert in which students and alumni sing together. Many alumni also join the students on tours to Russia.
Without a doubt, each of us had our own motivation to join the Russian choir. But we offer you a quote from one of the members of our choir, which unites us to some extent and explains a little the meaning of the choir in our lives: "Singing the music of the YRC in the style we sang it, was an antidote to the intellectualism that got many of us into Yale in the first place, but that could be so restrictive to the heart and spirit".
The singers are not Russians, or emigrants from Russia, but are students and former students who share a passion for the music and a belief in the power of music to build connections between people of different countries.
Thanks to KZitem, we are pleased to share these recordings with online audiences around the world who share our passion for this music.
