There is no question of course that David Bowie was a bona fide genius. He was also, I think, like the best artists, able to pick the right people for the right job around him, to create brilliant collaborative teams. With the mighty Mick Ronson at the helm of Hunky Dory (and later Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars) and ridiculously good Rick Wakeman at the piano he had a match made on Mars and of course, the rest is history.
I think at the heart of this mind boggling song is actually a beautifully simple melody motif that repeats and progresses coupled with a descending and ascending chromatic baseline which gives this whole thing a sense of astonishing driving forward motion until we reach a cataclysmic modulation into Bb major on the chorus. Liquid music theory in action!
There's no question to me that this is one of the worlds best chord progressions but want to hear what you think!? Answers on a youtube postcard please! Major Tom over and out.
