A railgun propels a projectile from the electromagnetic forces as the projectile travels between 2 rails. The projectile is an integral part of the circuit and the electromagnetic force is constant as electricity flows up one rail, through the projectile and back down the other parallel rail. A coilgun propels the projectile down a barrel by pulsing electricity through a series of coils. The projectile does not play an part in the circuit. Velocity is achieved through timed pulses as each coil imparts an amount of accelleration that adds up as the projectile travels down the barrel. They both use electricity and pulses of electromagnetism delivered quicklu via capacitors, but the similarities end there. There's also the concept of the Quench gun, but I digress. Basically, learn what you're talking about before you go around blathering misinformation on the interwebs. Don't feel bad tho, at least you're not a flat earther. I hope.

Maybe future models can later have an entire barrel including the magnets etc involved in the firing of projectiles..and the breach.. than can free spin once the roun is loaded. And it's spin when fired will be applied to the projectile. This would be cool cause many different shapes.. sizes.. and weights of projectiles can be fired that have different bullet profiles and require different twist rates. Making the spin rate adjustable by simply changing the spin speed on the gun with a regulator. Present rifles need entire barrel changes to alter the twist rates to fire different grain weight bullets etx. So maybe spinning coils and breach will be a beneficial alternative after all lol

One of the nice things about these kinds of weapons is that at smaller scales you won't need hearing protection, once these weapons reach proper ballistic velocities then it'll be a slient and deadly kindof weapon, the problems are that it needs an energy source that lasts long enough without recharge to be viable. In an instant we may also be able to make the weapon more powerful at a decrease of battery live by putting more voltage in, the ammo should also be very simple to manufacture and requires no chemicals to make. Magnetic based weapons are the future if we can sort out better portable power!

Since a coil or rail gun is a linear accelerator I’m surprised that nobody has thought to use an electric motor to accelerate a projectile since a motor is essentially an infinite linear accelerator… The release mechanism would need some thought but the run up to to release speed could take a lot longer (say 1 second) and so would not need the massive amounts of power that an equivalent short rail gun needs… Once accelerated to launch speed the device would take minimal energy to sustain rotation so it could be held in this state for a while. Rpm would probably need to be in the 50-100k range for an 8cm drum magazine and half ounce/15g rounds (around 200m/s?). The rotating magazine could be quickly interchanged with fresh rounds, it would have to be extremely durable, it’s probably not going to be 3D printed. The release mechanism could be programmable, anything from a 1-off round release to ‘all at once’…

I feel like this design could benefit from a piston that initially launches the projectile, while the electromagnets accelerate it.

Been wondering for years if anyone has done a hybrid of a coil gun/air gun or spring gun. The compressed air/spring for the initial momentum and coil or rail for acceleration within the barrel. Anyone seen anything like this? You could even have a sealed vacuumed barrel for less resistance and more efficiency.

Also coil guns and rail guns have been in existence for almost two decades now! Four years ago someone built a coil gun that looks eerily similar to this one. He built two of them and was even able to shoot through a computer screen with them and this might be the same guy that went into production because they look eerily similar! I've built both coil guns and rail guns but coil gun is stronger than theirs. The circuits are all over KZitem and it's very easy to build as long as you have some rudimentary electronics knowledge! I recommend everybody build at least a miniature and try it once.

Just remember boyz our modern guns had a humble start as black powder cannons, as rifle versions were too weak to do anything. Somehow this seems familiar 🤔

Would be great for home defense once it is made powerful enough for some real penetration. Perps wouldn't know where you are shooting them from since there is no flash or noise. A crossbow is the next best silent weapon out there for now. Oh and can we shut off those led displays on the home defense version?

Obviously you are entitled and don’t live in a neighborhood where crime is rampant. People need tools for self defense. Just look at all the home invasion videos on youtube.

I read somewhere that the French military looked into developing Gauss effect artillery in the 1920`s and `30`s. They realised that it was impractical. But I expect the technology has improved a bit since then.

It has a bit, but nowhere near enough for handhelds to be practical when compared to powder. The only legitimate use for coil and rail guns are for much bigger guns, when high armor penetration is needed without being able to use explosives.

A railgun and coil gun are completely utterly totally different things. The only thing they have in common is that they're electromagnetism... but in completely different ways.

Thatz basically a Rival gun that shoots metal disc’s a true rail gun would shoot the tip of the bullet without the casing…the point of a rail gun is to make a gun the shoots normal bullets quitely with less kick back and more of a steady accurate shot

If you need to ask WHY this would be good for home defense, you've clearly never fired a gun. Number one issue: noise. If you want to defend your home (and live anywhere that prohibits silencers), then prepare to be deafened, possibly doing permanent damage to your hearing. Flash concealment is a lesser issue but also solved here. How about ammo shortage? If you can get one of these to fire something as simple as a steel washer, one trip to the hardware store is all you need. Other possibilities include the ability to limit the power output(so you don't shoot through your walls, or, conversely, so you could if needed), or you could probably even jumpstart your car or use it as a phone charger 😜

A double-barreled shotgun is incredibly outdated for home defense these days. When three or four or five thugs at a time invade your home, you need something that fires a lot of round fast, without needing to reload. A double-barreled shotgun might take out one or two. An AR or AK can take them all out. That said, the Second Amendment is about protecting ourselves from a tyrannical government just as much as it is about home defense.

"But isn't that what every gun makes says about their guns? That (they) were made for home defence?" possibly, i don't listen to all gun makers on the market but the coilfun would make to me the perfect home defence gun, it's noise report is next to non existent, meaning that you can shoot it without ear protection or silencer and not damage your hearing, especially in closed buildings, also the fact that the propulsion method is electromagnetic and not chemical means that i can be adjusted, so you can set the power to limit the risk of over penetration, and avoid shooting holes in your neighbor's house because of a home invasion
@SpartanJohn-117

I believe a coil gun would be more apt for home defense as you could lower the power to match the situation. Need to defend you small, thin walled apartment from home invaders? Minimum settings to induce the least amount of penetration to avoid casualties. Got a bear in the woods trying to force it's way into you log cabin? Tighten that bad boy up to eliminate the threat. Unwanted space invaders trying to steal your cows? Crank that bad boy up to 11 and let 'er fly!
