Good to know. I'm a direct type of person, nonreligious and a little introverted. Some people get offended when they know I have no religion but I don't care what others believe. I've had multiple traumas in my life but in the long term got over them and managed to stay happy most of my life. I never worked more than I had to because my happiness derives from my children and a few good friends. I agree that when your basic needs are met

Writing from Australia, we appear to be a far less religiously focussed country than the US. We don't have the degree of these off the wall religions that US does, therefore if I meet a person who appears to have found God or similar, I tend to take a wide berth away from them, less they start with their indoctrination process.

The happiest countries in the world are typically those with high levels of social support, economic stability, low corruption, and strong social connections. According to the World Happiness Report 2021, the top 10 happiest countries are: Finland Denmark Switzerland Iceland Netherlands Norway Sweden Luxembourg New Zealand Austria These countries all have high levels of social support, which includes factors such as social connections, healthy life expectancy, and trust in government and institutions. They also tend to have strong economies, low levels of corruption, and high levels of personal freedom and autonomy. Furthermore, these countries often have policies and practices that prioritize the well-being of their citizens, such as universal healthcare, strong social safety nets, and access to education and career opportunities. They also tend to prioritize work-life balance and leisure time, which can contribute to overall happiness and well-being. It's worth noting that happiness is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon, and different people and cultures may have different understandings of what it means to be happy. However, these factors seem to be consistent predictors of overall life satisfaction and well-being.

With all due respect, I’m not buying it. The happiest, kindest, loving people I’ve ever met, for the most part, live in second and even third world countries. People in Europe, not so much. Maybe that goes with the folks in inner-city Boston.

@@janetstephens9563I don’t think third world countries are included in those types of analyses but it would be interesting to get info on that. There are a lot of developed countries included in that ranking though. There is something to what you’re saying. Good to hear someone who says it's okay to be introverted. Those of us who don't need a lot of people around us can stop feeling like it's going to affect our health if we don't get out there and constantly mingle. You would probably find that the shy person has many hobbies and interests that they prefer spending their time on. The older I get the more I value the time I have left and want to enjoy it in my own way. A few close people and some acquaintances seems to be enough...

I'm an introvert and while people refer to me as shy, I don't feel that way about myself. I don't feel shy about talking to new people, but I enjoy my alone time and prefer to spend my spare time reading, writing, biking, boxing, watching movies, playing with my cat, dancing to music. My hobbies keep me busy and I don't have time to feel lonely.

I genuinely believe that universal basic income (a guarantee that everyone over 18 has enough money to afford the basics of life: food, water, housing, utilities, etc) would go a long way to solve so many issues in society. Alongside a societal shift in work-life balance and looking after yourself (which having UBI gives you the money to do so, the rest is up to willingness) would lead to greater happiness and also less depression and associated mental health issues (there will still be mental health issues but massively reduced). Also, you cannot underestimate the value to community, as loneliness is one thing money cannot solve, it can provide provisions but it cannot make people engage. As an extremely introverted individual, the one thing I do have is a strong community around me, my family at the core, but a small group of friends who understand me, it helps to have that.

This study supposes the end is the most important time in one's life and when we decide whether our lives are happy or not. If you spend lots of time working when you're young and energetic, clearly that's something that makes you happier at that time. It might not give you final days filled with loving relationships, but that doesn't have to be how one defines one's entire life. Here and now matters too, so why would you choose to live your life surrounded by others when it's easier to be alone, and/or you prefer working? Just so you don't have to face the end of your life alone? Everyone you know might die before you do anyway. Then what?

Really? It doesn't take thirty years to do a study on happiness. Every individual has something different from others to make them happy. Are we back in the "Leave it to Beaver" days? "How to be a Homemaker", "How to be a Housewife"? It's redundant to discuss happiness when all of it is in jeopardy..... Sure, there's some happiness to be found in modern times, and I don't discourage people from it, they can find it on their own, and if they can't, they just need to find a degree of contentment. This faux sense of reality needs to stop. Americans are divided on those very things that allows some people to be happy. What makes one person happy, makes another unhappy, even though it has nothing to do with them. I guess that this is a paid promotion. At least it's not about the low life from Florida promoting his book.

The good Dr has not stumbled upon “meaning” and “purpose” as key determinants of perceived happiness. That is what meaningful relationships provide us; they confirm our bias that we matter, that we have meaning and purpose - because other people think so; because we matter, to THEM. Their gift of friendship is also our confirmation of our “mattering”. We only matter in relationship to things outside of ourself. Meaning and purpose are among the primary “keys” to happiness - BECAUSE we have no idea why we are on the Earth; as an individual and as a species so - we have to make meaning and find some purpose because we are born without any answers to the meaning of life. People that are able find some way to affirm that they matter, in some way - these are people that would say that they are reasonably happy. And, Dr. Waldinger =- STOP using the outdated word “shy”. It is derogatory in our culture and is not used anymore except in clinical diagnostics. Introverted and Extroverted are concepts that are illustrative of SOME of the many reasons some people have more/fewer friends. Stop being lazy Dr Waldinger and STOP using the outdated concept of “shy”. It does a disservice to confident, successful people that love being with other people, but only very frequently; they prefer and feel more energized when alone or with one or two others. They may be archetype Introverts but not in the least bit shy. Figure this one out or you not only alienate part of your intended audience but, you continue to demonstrate you lack of recognition of how dated you sound, on this issue. BTW - if you have an iPhone and ask Siri to define “shy” the first thing Siri will say is that “it is a dated term”.
@Rational20
