Continuing from our last episode, we're once again broadcasting from Hythe in the UK. Just as there's a 'Nihonbashi' in both Tokyo and Osaka, there are places in foreign countries with the same spelling but entirely different locations. The UK's Hythe is a prime example of this. The Hythe we visit this time is located in the southeastern part of England, near the sea. It's accessible from London using Hitachi's high-speed 'Class 395' train. Here, you can find the world's smallest public railway, the 'Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway.' With a track width of just 38cm and carriages 7 meters in length, it may be small, but it's fully-equipped and as professional as any standard railway. It features everything from signal operators to steam locomotives.
The carriages are genuine and varied, including open-air ones where you can feel the wind, cold, scent, and thrill, as well as luggage carriages, wheelchair-friendly carriages, and even ones with onboard bars. When you hop on, you'll be taken aback by the sensation of speed from its low-to-the-ground design, zipping along at surprising top speeds of up to 40km/h (25mph), which is faster than the average moped!
The journey from the starting point in Hythe to the terminus in Dungeness takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, with several interesting stops along the way. Mid-journey, there are locomotive exchanges and train swaps, which are quite the sight. There are many intriguing locomotives on this railway, and I took the opportunity to switch trains at intermediary stations to experience them.
The locomotive that took on the latter half of our journey has historical significance. It once carried the Duke of York, who later became King George VI, on a royal train. Despite its diminutive size, its presence is monumental, offering a full experience of the magic of steam railways.
In this video, we delve deep into the history, charm, and intricate details of the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, capturing its essence completely. We'll also showcase the picturesque scenery and station architectures along its route. It's a peculiar journey that is a must-watch for UK railway enthusiasts.
We invite you to immerse yourself in the allure of the world's smallest public railway through this video. And if you ever get the chance, we highly recommend making a visit to experience this unique rail adventure firsthand.
