Quite a scary ride! Bleak rocky route. I marvel at the hardships faced by the railway engineers who laid this line. Can’t even begin to imagine how they would have transported the materials and labourers on day to day basis. How many people would have lost their lives and limbs? It is an engineering wonder.
The first railway passenger railway in the world was in fact The Stockton-Darlington Railway, designed and built by George Stephenson. This line first ran in 1825 predating the Liverpool - Manchester line by five years.

There is just something to me about railroads that is just in my blood... I just love them. I have a layout in my house that is an LGB G scale railroad layout. MY wife let me suspend it from the ceiling of our house. I lived in a railroad town where the Grand Trunk rail system was and was the biggest system in the state of Michigan. It was Durand Michigan. We had it all . Big round house with turn table for the big steamers and everything you could want. Rail hobby guys would show up and make movies or videos of all the stuff that went on.... I say let the rails runs with great engine of power and of course Steam .....

Nice video. In a few years time the present electric rolling stock (dating from 1937...) will be replaced by new 2-car trains, build by Stadler. Inspection did show that, although 130 years old, the 48 percent steep track is still in very proper condition and there is no need to replace it. They will make some adjustments to the layout (such as a second platform and track at Alpnachstadt) so a 30 minutes intervall between trains can be introduced, and that is it.... I guess they were very releaved by the condition the line is in......

World: Why would you build a railway at this impossible terrain? Swiss: Because we have the money!
@davidorf3921
3 жыл бұрын
Actually Switzerland used to be an incredibly poor country, then tourism started, the first Thomas Cook tour was in 1863, it was discovered that Switzerland had all this incredible scenery that tourists actually wanted to visit, unfortunately there was very little in the way of a rail network within Switzerland and people had to travel by horse and carriage (if they were lucky , sometimes on foot or donkey for mountain routes) on what were described as dreadful roads. By 1872 the central government decided that the individual cantons were just not capable of building railways without going bankrupt so they centralized things, however at the same time many areas could see that whilst tourists wanted to get up to the tops of mountains, they didn't really want to walk up, so many private railways were formed to take care of this need. So the answer to why is not because we have money, it was in fact, because the tourists will pay us to go up this impossible terrain without having to walk.

Quite interesting..But FAR FROM BEING FACTUAL. The FIRST passenger liner ran from Stockton to Darlington (Co Durham, UK...I've seen the original rail line.) And the Snowdon Railway (Wales UK) has used the rack-and-pinion system for the past 100 years, and as for STEEP check out the Peak Railway in Hong Kong.....otherwise...not a bad video...
