Among the thousands of filmed archives from World War I (1914-1918), scenes filmed on the battlefields are extremely rare. These are often reenactments, not actual combat scenes. For example, in the documentary "The Battle of the Somme", shot in 1916 by Geoffrey H. Malins and John B. McDowell, real soldiers appear on screen, but scenes that show them being killed are staged.
Find out why is there so little actual archival footage showing World War I soldiers in combat.
