There’s too much confusion (and I blame the marketing for this) out there for pepper spray. To clear things up we need to explain the difference between SHU, MC, and OC ratings. Too many companies use these interchangeably to hype up their products. SHU - is a comparative scale of measurement for the hotness (pungency) of a particular pepper. A red bell pepper is around 0, a habanero 150,000 - 325,000, ghost chili a 1,000,000, Carolina pepper about 2,000,000. MC - is the major capsaicinoids (as a percentage of volume) in the oil extracted from a particular pepper. Now you can get 1.33% MC from a habanero and 1.33% MC from a ghost chili, the actual pungency of each extract would still “feel” different, and carry different SHU ratings. OC - is the oleoresin capsicum, or the total oil extracted from a chili pepper (of which only a small percentage is actual major capsaicinoids MC, the rest are what’s called Related Capsaicinoids). So if 100ml of OC was extracted from a Habanero, at 1.33% MC only 1.33ml (for arguments sake) would be the major capsaicinoids; of the 1.33ml MC from a Habanero the actual SHU heat (pungency) would be 150,000 - 325,000 SHU. Now you see how all the numbers used above can be used by a marketing team to make various claims about their spray, while they all actually mean something different. Now knowing the numbers and what they mean, we can take a spray and break it down: SABRE Red - marketed as 1.33% MC, at 10% OC, with 2,000,000 SHU. So there’s 10% OC Of total bottle volume (if they had a 1000ml bottle, there’s 100ml OC extract by volume). Of the 100ml of OC per bottle there is 1.33% MC, or 1.33ml by volume, which measures at 2,000,000 SHU. Fox Labs 5.3 - doesn’t officially label an MC rating, but I’ve seen research which says it’s about 0.64% - 0.67% MC, at 2% OC, and 5,300,000 SHU. So let’s take the same 1000ml bottle from before, then 20ml are OC, of which 0.134ml by volume is MC at 5,300,000 SHU. A different way of looking at these sprays is what’s the SHU output of the spray? SABRE Red - 2,000,000 SHU x 10% = 200,000 SHU Fox Labs - 5,300,000 SHU x 2% = 106,000 SHU - though there’s a caveat with the original Fox Labs spray, they used a substance in their aerosol carrier that would increase the effectiveness of the spray by opening up the pores of your skin. They have since moved away from using that substance, which is why they’ve had to up their concentrations and have since released the: Fox Labs 5.3 Squared spray, which is 4% OC Fox Labs 5.3 Squared - 5,300,000 SHU x 4% = 212,000 SHU There’s some arguments to be made about wether or not the Related Capsaicinoids in the OC add to the overall SHU rating, or if it’s only the Major Capsaicinoids (MC) in the OC that carry the total SHU rating. Depending on which it is, would change the final SHU output numbers...but suffice it to say you want to be looking at all three of these ratings when choosing your preferred defensive pepper spray.

Fox Labs is weak. And they just lowered their formula to cut cost according to their website a year ago. They said it was due to government regulations which was BS. I live in Baltimore and have used Sabre Red three times on four different people. And they test shoot every canister before it leave their factory to you know it's going to work. BUT! I'm very interested in using UDAP Mugger Fogger because it's even stronger. Sabre Red put the MC on their can as well. Fox Labs doesn't because they have weak spray. Also the proper way to judge the hotness is the MC%. That is correct. Another pepper spray I'd like to try is Counter Assault fogger. It's the exact same strength as Sabre Red but the nozzle is the size of a bear spray canister so you will completely drench an attacker with very thick fog. Sabre Red has worked amazingly for me. But I would like to try these two, Mugger Fogger and Counter Assault Fogger, both look every more amazing. Fox Labs is weak AF. They try to say isn't the strongest in their marketing but it's a lie. Do NOT use Fox Labs!

You have no idea what you’re talking about in regards to Fox Labs. I’m glad you like the sprays you like, and that they worked for you, but please don’t put your opinion out there as actual information of a product you don’t understand well. What Fox Labs changed in their formula is they removed Trichloroethylene (TCE). TCE is a general degreaser as well as a potential toxin, and was used as an additive in their original formula to assist in opening up skin pores to speed up the delivery of their OC components. That helped make their spray appear more effective, while only being 2% OC at 0.67% MC. Though to be fair they also used a higher Scoville heat unit oil extract at 5,000,000 units compared to most sprays around 1,200,000 - 2,000,000 units. Since the removal of TCE they still offer their original formula, which is still very effective, but have since also added their newer product line of 5.3 Squared, which doubles the concentration of the OC component. Fox Labs, has one of the most consistent and effective sprays on the market, which explains their popularity with consumers, major police departments, and other law enforcement agencies across the country. I recommend you do a blind test for yourself, get sprayed with your preferred spray, then Fox Labs, without knowing which is which until after the test. Or just watch some Fox Labs comparison/effectiveness spray tests on KZitem.

I just bought a can of this mugger fogger from Cabela's and I test-fired it in the woods. Once I press down on the button, a red drizzle dripped on my fingers. Then the spray started coming out in a fog pattern. I put it away after cleaning my hand and the nozzle. The one thing I didn't like about this brand is the drippage. I've always used Sabre red in the past and it's always sprayed a red cone mist right from jump. It's also tested in house before selling and sprays four times longer than other sprays. Now I know Sabre red is only 1.33 % major capsinoids but I can trust it in a situation in a moment's time. I will test fire this canister of mugger fogger once again and see the results. But so far having it drip and stop spraying for a second left a bad taste in my mouth about this brand. Also if you look in any police supply stores online they don't sell mugger fogger pepper spray. They have Sabre red, defense Technologies, Fox Five Point 3 percent and vector brand. Also the brands that say for Police use only or law enforcement only are the ones that are most trusted in my opinion.

I had the exact same thing happen to me with their "world's hottest" formulation. They used to sell a variation called the clip on commander and it was the same issue. I did a test fire and just drizzled out. If I had been relying on that in a real situation I'd have been toast. I don't know if I got a bad batch or what. I have bought UDAP products in the past and they worked fine. However those were the large Magnum sizes. Now you've confirmed that it wasn't just me. Like you, I also purchased mine from a 3rd party seller whereas the others that worked properly I bought directly from udap.

A factor sometimes not considered is method of dispersal. From what I've read there seem to be stream, gel, fog, and foam. A youtube reviewer didn't like the gel, as it seems to require too much accuracy to work. The problem with the fog type is if you have to use it inside, it's going to hit everyone, including the user. This to me would make it a really bad choice for people who have to take public transportation, plus not so good if you need to use it in a convenient store or other place of business. The stream and foam(cold steel inferno uses the foam) seemed to be the best choices for versatility.

Belgian police forces use a pepperspray that shoots a beam not a spray/fog like this one. The beam enables it to go a lot further ( up to 10m) and a lot more concentrated. A fog disperses a lot after a couple first meters a loses a lot of it's potency. You might want to look into that.

I guess being intoxicated may have lessened his pain somewhat but the fact that he couldn't see was good enough to subdue any further threat. This is the only spray I recommend.

Mace GARD does list the MC - it is only a .66% in the 18 gram Jogger Style Dispenser - but remember too that ALTHOUGH we want to have the best protection we can carry, pepper spray has a lot of adverse issues to the user. If someone doesn't at least shoot their pepper spray to see the viscosity (best way I can describe the OC) They could miss use the spray enough to debilitate themselves as well. Someone nuts enough to attack you may be tweaked enough to work through the pain of "the hottest spray" while the sprayer gets a good shot and totally disorients themselves into an even worse situation. I don't acquaint this to someone wrestling a gun out of your hand, pepper spray is a very different beast - ideally it gets you out of the situation and still in complete control - I see anything boasting 3 million scovilles to be an extreme weapon for an extreme situation - but how many times have we seen well trained police get blowback and put them on the mat as well. I'm all for putting an attacker on the ground, clawing at their eyes and throat (and even getting a kick to their face for good measure) but not everyone should be shooting a S&W 500 Magnum when a 9mm is all they can comfortably handle - good info! Thanks. As you said, walking into the fog a little to see what you are carrying could be a life saver, too often people get in over their heads.

Actually, a 3.0 MC % would be stronger than bear spray- bear spray MUST be between 1.0 and 2.0 % MC. Anything stronger is illegal in the U.S. to be used on animals. Similarly, law enforcement has a restriction at 1.33% MC because anything stronger is defined by criminal law as a "bear spray" which is illegal to use against humans. Therefore, UDAP is full of horse shit, or their breaking the law, one of the two. But what really defines heat is the SHU rating AND the MC%. a O.C.% above 10% is a dead give away that something is wrong with the product, because their using more active ingredient to offset an inferior active ingredient. Also, an astronomically high SHU rating is also usually a dead give away something is wrong, UNLESS it is coupled with a relatively LOW OC %- for example- Fox Labs is a 5.3 million SHU (most sprays are 2 Million SHU) BUT Fox labs sprays are only 2% OC, where Most sprays are 10% OC . (with the notable exception of def tec's "First Defense"- which is the "industry standard" of law enforcement, which is a 2% spray.) As a rule, if you go with a 2 Million SHU, 1.33% MC and a 10% Spray, you have a "Standard" spray. Fox labs has a bit more heat, but the effects wear off a bit quicker as well. Most of the other brands are knockoffs of Sabre Red, which is an "OK" spray that will hold it's own. Basically, its like anything else- if it's too good to be true, then don't believe it- "world's hottest" falls within this category of things. The fact that they advertise this way tells me that they have major problems with the product.
