Oh boy this really speaks to me. I'm a professional game developer and I gotta do what I gotta do but for personal projects I found that the more gear/power I got the shittier job I did on my personal stuff. I guess I'm one of those types that can only work in a constrained environment. For my home computer I use a potato bucket from like 15 years ago and I feel more creative than ever. Similar story I had a standard midlife crisis and bought a crapload of synths. I hate my wall of synths. I feel like the quality of my work dipped like crazy since I had so many options. I picked the 2 I love (standard keyboard synth and a sequencer) and am trying to sell the rest. The concept of "having the power to do whatever you want" causes me to get paralysis. Sorry for the talking about myself ramble, this video just happens to speak to me a lot. super cool channel!

well, I've been doing graphics(openGL shaders) on a crappy laptop with an integrated graphics card and that has a i3 cpu and it sucks. I can't even run most shaders on Shadertoy.. so, limitations don't make you more creative all the time.
@CanadianReset

@@sebp400 I also do graphics programming as a hobby on a 12+ year old computer and can't run modern graphics api's as well so I can empathize to some degree. That said there's still a lot I can do with the only the older api's though and I've had fun working withing those constraints. If you are into graphics look into the demo scene. A lot of fun can be done without involving the GPU. Sometimes I prefer it because you don't have to worry so much about the direct pipeline and can read stuff back more easily etc. Another option is a raspberry pi can run OpenGL ES 3.1 which is more than enough for doing a lot with shaders.

On the subject of working with what you've got, right now I have a pc I bought mainly for gaming but just recently got Reaper again and I'm building a sample library to work with. Thing is, I'm struggling to figure out how to (this is going to sound silly) get that "chopped sample" vibe in my beats. Like everything sounds sterile somehow, even with effects. Not sure exactly what I'm trying to get at here because I'm so new to this. Just trying to learn how to get the vibe I hear out onto the DAW.

Got an SP for Xmas and became addicted to it for like a month because I was having so much fun learning the process vs. making beats on logic which was becoming v samey and uninspiring. However, I've got back into logic this month and I'm having even more fun switching between laptop and SP (which is v easy due to the SD card) and basically using the SP for sketching out ideas / adding FX and then using logic for the stuff that I struggle to do on the SP. I think limitations are necessary for the creative process but sometimes a laptop is better for creating the exact sound you want. (I especially love doing synth sound design in logic, exporting and adding FX on the SP and then using that as a sample / basis of my beat)

@@jonmakesbeatsYeah there’s an older dude who does orchestral stuff on here, and he swears by bouncing everything in place to audio because audio requires next to no processing power or ram, so once you are cool with a track, bounce it out, and you can multiply the number of tracks infinity compared to having the machine processing and calculating midi info (which is a giant complex math equation per track). You can also freeze any tracks you are comfortable keeping. Combine the two and you can use anything you want in a track working with very little Ram.

if you look at the spec comparisons of the m1 air, ram is less important thanks to the M1 chip, ableton works actually better with lower buffer rates, and the air holds its own or can out perform MBP from 2019 at certain tasks/programs that are m1 optimized. Yes massive sample libraries will be tricky, but for anything else, you could run 50+ tracks on something like logic. Ableton isn't as well optimized compared to reaper / logic for m1 by quite a bit. Check forums for people's experiences, it's actually a really nice production machine provided you're not tasking it with gpu tasks like in the video

This is very intuitive especially once you consider what "creativity" actually means. I think people often think of creativity as a synonym for being imaginative even tho thats not what it means, it usually relates to, l creative problem solving, so it makes sense that having those problems to solve, like hardware or source limitations for music in this case, would boost creativity, rather than having ultimate freedom and no points of reference or areas where you have to be creative with your decisions to make things work. I have definitely found this to be the case. While I dig a DAW once it's time to mix and master, for creative endeavors like writing and arranging, I find I'm way more creative on limited devices. My 2 hardware items are the Roland MC707 and the 1010music Blackbox. The MC707 has a ton of options, but the workflow is still limited enough to inspire creativity. The Blackbox has even less options and a very specific workflow, but I tend to get way more creative with it, especially in chopping and tricking out samples. My iPad stands somewhere between those and a DAW. It is more limited than the DAW, and if I stay with something like Loopy Pro, where I'm committing to audio fairly early in the creation process, then it can be a good creative device. However, at times, if I consider all the synth apps and effect apps, it starts to generate that option paralysis similar to a DAW, so I have to come to the iPad with a very specific and limited goal to make it work for me. P.S. I've only watched a few of your videos so far, but I dig how you are quick to determine what has vibe and what doesn't. I plan to check out more of your stuff and appreciate the insights.

@@jonmakesbeats I cant find any press release material for it, but I found a Sound On Sound review for AD1 in July 2007, so maybe too late for Heeters, but definitely in the right timeframe for Butter.

Been blending AD with trap drums for years now, definitely brings a human feel to my drum processing and being a drummer for 15 years this AD program is amazing, it emulates hi-hats like open to close quickly so well I can practically fool anybody with it

U can get away with low specs based on what you're doing.. Me I wanna switch to Macos for the stability with running CPU intensive vst's & more importantly for The Performance boost when video editing.

Your videos and music are obviously incredible because even with my pathetic attention span I am able to watch your videos all the way through without fail

I used a laptop, but honestly I felt simplicity was better. So I use fl studio mobile on a tablet. It gets the job done for me, to each their own.

I use a celeron but since it's a 2020 it has SSE support I use bitwig which runs fine even with the limits of a education series laptop for students

Can you imagine using Fruity Loops 1/2/3 on a Pentium 1 (with upgraded and upgraded RAM? Can you imagine adding effects etc. and trying to mix it? Bounce to mp3, listen on MP3 player, phone (crappy quality 1999/2000 one's), HiFi and car system and make notes and then repeat until it sounds great. Love Fruity. Vegas, Radium, Cakewalk etc in the late 90's and early 00's , I found did not like to be treated like that. FL Studio and Reason are my staples and still doing it on a Windows PC or Laptop. Mac is too rich for my blood, my wife would probably divorce me if I got one of those. Been thinking about starting up my Pentium 2 and breaking out a copy of Fruity Loops 1 & 2 and see what comes out of my Soul.

I made most of My best music on a old Laptop and Reason 4, which I used from 2006 to 2021 thats 15 years of not upgrading. Now I have Reason 12 a wall of VSTs and a i9 Razor Gaming laptop 3 physical synths but is My music better? NO its pretty much exactly the same.
