That engine has had valve float, when you make tuning changes and raise the rpm you should do the valve springs too. If left unchecked the valve float can cause the collets to pop out and drop the valve- that's proper carnage.

I think the reason the leak down test did not show leakage in all of the cylinders is due to the one valve being much more bent than the others, so the clamping force of the spring was not able to overcome it. In the case of the other cylinders, possibly they did not leak because the bends weren't so severe that the clamping force of the valve springs weren't able to overcome them. All of the intake and exhaust valves need to be measured with a dial indicator to see if they are bent. I'd say even if you have to replace all of the intake and exhaust valves, you got away with much less damage than the worst-case. Of course, you will have to take care of the crank hub as well.
@bowie3000

Do you think the valve springs are strong enough to pull the shanks out of line with the guides ? I just can’t see them being strong enough to effectively seat a valve enough to get zero leak.

Ooffff mate, seems to have been a massive hit in the rotating assembly. If this has happened you should also have the rest checked, pistons, rods, cranckshaft, main bearings etc, pretty sure the guys at swift have this in the picture. Just a tip after my recent 48 error codes indicating a fried ecu which was not fried at all: Replace the valvelift actuator and the asociated excentric axle as a precaution since you're at it anyway. They could very well be the reason why the S55 can be this typical rough at idling/rolling away with a cold engine. Had mine failing at 15.000km (suddenly with a ton of error messages and one month (!) of trial and error in finding the source of one of the power circuits of the ECO only putting out 1V i/o 5V) after a failed cranckhub at 9.000km. Me not really happy with the S55 although after it had been repaired, it was oompf all the way to be honest haha. Good luck with the repairs, great content !!

Bit of a worry if the valves have hit the pistons its possible the top piston ring grooves could have been slightly crushed trapping the rings that need to be free to expand and contract with engine temp. I have seen it. Good thing to keep the valves in order is to mark front on a stiff piece of card pierce and push the valves through in order. Certainly different interesting content coming out of some bad luck. Hope all goes well. 👍👍👍

I’ve been through this. Replacement engine is the way to go. Russ may be a master, but the problem with a rebuild is that it’s a rebuild. Mine went 2,500 miles and failed again - due to faulty shop work. Wasn’t until I bought a new motor that my problems were solved. Many people will tell you NOT to open these engines. I second that. It’s faster and cheaper - and there’s a ton of S55’s out there.
