I took piano lessons for 6mos when I was 10. 20 years later, I developed bad habits and have never really progressed. Now I truly want to be capable of playing the piano with the goal of being able to play Hymns. The problem is, playing all 4 notes together all at the same time is very hard for me. And I thought that playing the chords is an escape/excuse for me to not learn to sight-read. But this video just gave me a new light. My goal is to be able to play Hymns for church. And if it makes it easier for me to do some sight-reading with chords, then why not. Thanks for this. This inspired me to learn and practice both sight-reading and chords.

JQ. Lovely Video clip! Apologies for the intrusion, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you considered - Dinanlinson Detox System Approach (search on google)? It is an awesome exclusive guide for revealing the secret to master the piano minus the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my close friend Aubrey got amazing results with it.

You uploaded this video 4 years ago, and I can't thank you enough. The last few months, I started playing in a church where hymns are sung every Sunday. Not knowing how to approach hymns makes me discouraged sometimes but I'm so thankful I found your video. God bless you! I hope you keep sharing your knowledge. You're really eloquent 😊

Thanks for the great content that you put out. Praise God. I would like to know what kind of passing chords to use while playing hymns when going from I chord, say from the end of a verse, to I chord again at the start of the refrain??? Thanks in advance.

As a guitar player trying to tackle this very problem - I came to a similar conclusion. All those little old ladies who swear they only read music and don't play by ear are LYING. They're just reading a fancy chord chart cleverly disguised as a two staff chart. They are NOT playing the vocal parts written in the book - the good ones are already doing this.

Why not link us to your instructional videos on playing the hymns strictly as they are suggested in the hymnal (by the way hymnals can differ) instead of throwing cold water on the appreciation we choose to give to a young man being so generous with his time? The tongue is a brutal little beast…hard to tame.
