Thanks for this one, Adam. Yeah.. I drove a few of these over the years, I never owned one, but frequently had to drive cars owned by others.. The old horn rings they had in the '50s and '60s are sort of nostalgic now, I don't mind those, but putting it where simply gripping the wheel a bit too tightly activates the horn seems like a half baked idea...

The rim blow switched a relay that connected the 12 volt to sound the horn. Older, and newer, horns the horn button or other type of switch connected the 12 volt directly. Rim blow used a low power circuit, still 12 volt, for fear that the delicate nature of the internal parts would become worn if they had full power through them. Especially cars with an exceptionally loud horn. I had a small car once that had a horn that other people could not hear. I added a relay to power a loud horn that just came off a junkyard Cadillac. Parts store horns were too expensive. Junkyard parts were my price range. I chose the Caddy because I knew it had a loud horn. It also had a musical sound to it. I used the relay because its original horn was wired so the horn button grounded the horn. Opposite of what older horns did. The downside is that I did not want to use it to get kids to get out of the road. I did not want to scare them. But perfect for the interstate.

Where I live you have to get yearly inspections to register your car. I lost count the number of times I was told my horn did not work and observed a smug mechanic violently thumping the Centre of the steering wheel or the end of the turn signal stalk. They were shocked when I leaned in and blew the horn seemingly by magic. But then accused me of making some shonky home made control for the horn. But then after almost breaking the turn signal stalk they would tell me my high beams did not work. They had never seen the high beam switch on the floor ever before. So these mechanics weren't that smart.

@@OffGridInvestor honestly they were utterly clueless about every aspect of the car. If they saw something they had not seen before, in other words a feature that did not exist in the cheap second rate 30 year old junker they were driving, or a component they were unfamiliar with again because they had no experience with a high end luxury car, they would deliberately invent non existent problems with my car so I could not pass the inspection. I think jealousy and a deep inferiority complex were at play also. One time I was told it would not pass the inspection because it came out with hubcaps and I had removed them. (I'd put alloy wheels on the car). I said why do I need the hub caps? The answer was classic. He said "if your wheel nuts come off the hub cap will capture them so they don't get lost" I said "if the wheel nuts come off there will be much bigger problems than searching for some lost nuts"

Also that car had the rim blow which because of its age I guess, kinda worked if it wanted to. She asked me to beep the horn, and I was fumbling around the rim until it sounded. She passed me, but found it strange. She actually suggested that I bring 'a newer car next time'..

I investigated and figured it out. I then discovered an unplugged relay under the seat and helpfully reconnected it. Then she got in the car and it wouldn't start. It was because of the Interlock system, which required you to buckle the seatbelt before the car would start. She was not a seatbelt gal back in '77, so the Interlock was immediately disconnected again. She never liked the rim-blow horn, and only kept the otherwise beautiful car (but it really was a lemon, anyway) only two years.

Seems like I remember this on a ‘73 Cougar I drove. Worked fine, might have taken a bit more pressure to operate, but not horribly tough. Your comments about taillights being turned upside down on a different vehicle sounds like a great topic for a future video.... How many other examples can you come up with?

He's 100% correct about the 1st gen Durangos and the Caravan of the same era. I never noticed it but a co-worker pointed it out 1 day on my 01. After that I could never unsee it. My point? Well, a base Caravan priced at around 18k had the same lights as my fully loaded 01 Durango 4x4 SLT with the 5.9 which was tickling $42k...just flipped around...

Grandpa brought home a new used Buick with this feature when I was a little kid. He sat me in the driver's seat and said "Nobody can figure out where the horn is on this thing. See if you can find it." It took me a while, but I found it! Grandpa just shook his head and laughed when I showed him where it was.

Chryco had the industry's last horn rings because the California Highway Patrol specified it in the cars they bought as cruisers well into the 1970s. They put 'em in different retail cars too, like the Valiant Brougham.

In the CHP case, the ring activated the siren so the officer could just blip the device instead of flipping a switch on the console, which made it constantly on. My 69 Fury iii had the half ring 3 spoke wheel. U could still push on the center hub to activate the horn.

Funny story...When I was very young my parents purchased a 1971 Dodge Dart Swinger. Which was a BIG change since prior to that they had owned 2 Cadillac land yachts! I remember them talking about how they could not find the horn. And one day my Mom pulled into the driveway repeatedly honking the horn as she had found it on accident while driving along! That is the only rim blow steering wheel I had ever heard of until this video and never knew that is what it was called. Fun topic!

I had a '72 LTD Brougham with the rim-blow. A chunk of the plastic snapped off in the cold weather and exposed the metal plate under it. After that, a small bump, a sneeze, a mere swerve, the horn would blow. I loved that car, even though it felt the need to announce it's arrival 🙂

My folks had a 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado that had the rim blow steering wheel and I always thought that was one of the best and coolest features ever put in the cabin of a car. Just the pressure of your fingertips when squeezing the rim would sound the horn. Squeezing the rim is a fairly instinctive response to the panic of realizing you are about to hit something, so this was some great ergonomic design. I imagine it may have posed some design challenge, but we got rid of that car in 1974 when I was 12, so I never had the opportunity or need to disassemble it to see its inner workings.

My mother had a 71 Dodge Dart with the rim blow horn. It was great until it stopped working and then decided to stick on blowing the horn constantly at 2 A.M. That happened twice as I recall and it was an expensive repair. Of course, the neighbors didn't appreciate it at all. I think she eventually had it disconnected because it was the 70's and annual inspections were not required.

AMC also offered a rim blow wheel. My 73 imperials had it too. Once I used the horn and a friend didn’t see how I did it. After that every time I used the horn I faked using one of the other switches , he never could figure out how I was blowing it.

The jokes, they write themselves! (Imagine Zoidberg's voice when you read that.) I assume this was really annoying for those people who grip the wheel from the inside to turn it. (Come to think of it, I haven't seen anyone do that in a long time.)

Was that that little plunger thing you pulled out of the steering column? That was one of those random, unmarked controls that left people guessing. Some VW bugs had the rear defroster switch literally hiding under the dashboard and during the same years, most VWs had a brake light that lit up when you pressed it; you were actually supposed to press it every now and then to check the bulb.

Had the rim blow horn on early 1970s Ford Grand Torino with cruise control. It was great! I never had a problem with it accidentally honking when I didn't mean for it to. The best part was, in an emergency situation, like someone unintentionally cutting in front of you (like from their blind spot, just gripping the wheel to move suddenly out of the way would sound the horn and alert them. Loved it! I have missed it ever since. I would pay extra for it now, I consider it that good as a safety feature.
