I played baseball growing up and it always bothered me when coaches and drunk dads would say "the throw beat the runner" and therefore the runner should be out. This really proves nothing, unless it is a force out. I've seen it happen many times that the player misses the tag on the runner for many different reasons. It's like saying the pitcher threw a strike because the ball hit the catchers glove.

Actually, this doesn't qualify as a bad call. The human eye could not make the distinction that he was tagged... Period. He whiffed the swipe and managed to *barely* skid the glove off the pants... Look at other videos with better angles and slow motion... 1/16th of an inch, if that, made contact. Anyone would have called that a whiff.
@kc_atangen83
10 жыл бұрын
Nope, its a bad call; he even had a horrible angle, which made it worse, he called him safe because he wanted to get the long game over with
@DaejinTye
10 жыл бұрын
KC Tabuu Did he say that publicly or are you a mind reader? It was an impossible call to make realistically. You're bias because you get to see it in slow-motion with freeze frame. At full speed there is literally no evidence he tagged him and solid evidence he missed. Case and point, the glove never shows any signs of impact with the leg. The graze was so minor that the glove doesn't move... Any honest person would've called that safe.
@kc_atangen83
10 жыл бұрын
And even if he were safe, most people would credit the fielding of the Pirates that beat the runner to home, and would've called him out, especially since the tag was really minor; and hence, they would overlook the tag.
@kc_atangen83
10 жыл бұрын
And, an umpire would never say that he wanted to get the game over with in public; in fact, he would get FIRED for that, but almost every umpire wants to get the game over with and collect their paycheck. I'll admit it, I feel the same way most of the time, especially since the league I umpire is extremely shitty (I ump 10U and the pitchers literally walk 12 people in a row). Put yourself into his shoes, if you had thick skin and ejecting experience, wouldn't you rather deal with a manager who can't do anything about the game both DURING and AFTER the game (at least during that year; obviously not now since there is instant replay) and go home, or would you rather put your mask on, and squat for a likely 5 more innings, especially with a game that long, and either team couldn't outscore the other for 10 innings?
@DaejinTye
10 жыл бұрын
So, you'd rather a bad call of calling him out and prolonging the game, than the honest mistake call that was made of him being safe? Wtf logic is that? Prolong the game just because for... What was the reason for that? I mean, look at the rules and what happened... The catcher never touched the plate, as if it would've made a difference, and he (for the sake of argument) "missed" the runner... Why would you credit that? You literally just said you'd cheat if it was you and the situation was reversed.

As an ump... to CALL an out, I must have CLEAR EVIDENCE of an out! I use both my EYES and EARS to gather that evidence. Watching this play - the glove BARELY touched the runner, if at all. I can EASILY see how this could be seen as a "no tag." Want the out? MAKE A CONVINCING TAG!

"Unbelievable... the throw beat him by a mile" says the announcer as if that were what matters. Do the announcers even know that a tag/non-tag is what determines out/safe? It continues.... "this play will be replayed over and over" while showing a full minute of the manager arguing the call and NOT showing the reply (eventually showing it). "You'd have to clearly see daylight between the knee and the glove..." as if they can tell from the camera angle whether the umpire saw daylight between the knee and the glove. Do the announcers no realize that the umpire is (a) much closer and (b) has a different angle.

Watch the play at the play up close, is there a tag at the plate. It does look like the catcher wifs on the tag. Can't really see if theres a tag on the left knee because the video isn't HD. But the catcher doesn't tag the right side of the body. Pay attention to the up close video, it should change your mind. Unless, you're a harden Pirates fan. ha

Give Jerry Meals some credit. It was 19 innings, and everyone there was tired. So he just wanted to go home. But you can't blow a call just so you can go home. As an MLB umpire, you have to make the right call, especially with a play as obvious as this one. I know it was a long game but I'm a huge Pirates fan, and that call caused them the game.

I am a certified High School umpire and know the game very well. The Umpire did the right thing in attempting to move the bat out of the way but he did a terrible job of getting into position to make the call. He needed to be in the batter's box slightly forward. not behind the plate. He had no angle. That said, he still should have been able to see that the guy was out.
@julienpeissel9113

I believe that the umpires were correct on this call. The ball is in the catchers' glove he never tags the runner with the glove. He tags the runner his hand bare hand. And also the catcher's motion of the glove never slows down so theres no way the cather tagged him.

I seen a first base ump do it to Cleveland once, he called the guy out at first, he beat the throw by two steps, two steps mind you. Manager Mike Hargrove came out of the third base side dugout and never even got to the third base line when the ump mouthed "I Fucked up", Hargrove immediately turned around and went back to the dugout.

This is why the AL used to not start an inning past 1 am. The NL would play all night, if necessary. One year in the '80s, the Astros and Dodgers played 22 innings that ended past 3 am and the next game was less than 9 hours later, a noon start. That game went 15 innings. Now those umps were the ones who look great after seeing this garbage!
