Wow ok I loved Unwind! I think some of the critiques you had about it were almost products of the time, imo. Like when it came out, it wasn’t part of an overdone YA dystopia because dystopia hadn’t gone into full swing in YA yet. And since the political climate was so drastically different, reproductive rights weren’t at such of the forefront for being at risk, and thus weren’t a focus of the story so much as a background piece of info to justify the premise.

The Unwind series was one of my favorite series ever, and I loved the books because they ask questions and then tell the reader to draw their own conclusions. So may say it's "straddling the line" but it's important not to tell young people what to think but question their already set beliefs. Today, I've noticed the trend in YA and in real life is to take a hard stance about what is right and what is wrong about modern society, which isn't really a great environment for critical thinking. Oh well, that's just my two cents!
@annabelcrescibene4257

I so agree. It had this super gray morality. The books get 1000% better as the go on. Once you start learning about cam and the black market and deep into the world building which is Neal Shustermans strong suit the books get way better. I absolutely adore this series.

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell. Just why. It's total filler, the characters are regressed to shadows of who they were in the first book, and Simon and Baz's relationship is toxic to the point of being abusive. It taught us some really cool things about the magic system, but that was its one redeeming factor.

I had a Lisa Jewell book on my worst of 2019 as well for very similar reasons. I can't remember if it was stated outright, or if it was just very very heavily implied, but basically you get the identity of the killer like 3 chapters in :/ It made every other "big reveal" feel really insignificant, and you basically just spend the next like 300 pages waiting for the MC (who I found super unlikeable) to get caught up to speed.

As someone who loves Jennifer Lynn Barnes writing, seeing Bad Blood on this list kinda hurt. And I'd argue the point about those connections, that having difficult childhoods because of those connections, is why these characters are Naturals. Parts of these were also set up from the very beginning with Cassie's mom. And we knew brief stretches of others, they just were one offs until they were important for this book. I can see how you didn't like it, but I've loved it both times I've read it.

I'm a bit late to this book, as it was a 2018 release, but in 2019 I read Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi and it is by far the worst book I have ever read! I hate saying things like that about books because I'm worried it sounds like I'm shading authors/being rude, but Emergency Contact was so bad I feel like I have to talk about how much I disliked it! The main character Penny was so unlikable. She was rude to everyone who tried to be nice to her, called girls who wear makeup attention seeking, and slut shamed her mom. Her love interest Sam was a fair bit more tolerable, but he was very underdeveloped and was cruel to his ex girlfriend in many situations. Also, just as a warning to anyone who wants to read it, there is a sexual assault scene that came out of nowhere! Almost threw me into a panic attack in class! The book had practically zero plot other than "Sam and Penny are sad. They're going to kiss now."
