Day 1-10: Building estrogen, glucose can go down: great time to fast to balance the estrogen system. Day 11-15: Testosterone is coming in: focus on breaking down (metabolize) the hormones with bitter vegetables like arugula. Day 16-20: Coming down from ovulation: great time for a 36 hour fast. Day 21-28: Progesterone is coming in: cravings for carbs to bring glucose up. Don't workout too hard/great time to rest.

Knowledge is power!! Just today i was going start my journey to 36 hour fasting,,,,but have felt blah all day and overwhelmed by the idea of NOT eating. Also today is a lifting day but my body was saying no. Even after 2 cups of coffee and 50 ounces of water I went and laid back down this morning, and I never do that on the norm. I was about 18 hours into my fast and watched this video and the light came on, I am about 5-7 days out from my period. What a relief to understand why I am feeling off and dragging my feet working out and fasting. So I listened to my body, did a 30 minute walk and made myself lunch. I feel less wilted. I am ordering the book because now I am excited to fast with my cycle instead of going against it. Thank you Dr. Mindy for all this great insight.

I have been fasting and discovered that right before my cycle I felt terrible. Tired and super irritable when fasting. This has really helped me modify my needs and created a shame free zone for my self that week before my period. Longer fasts between days 1 and 10. 😊 I am losing weight and happy with the progress I am making. Thanks so much Dr Mindy❤

I'm on month 2 of fasting like a girl and I have decreased my longer cycle by 10 whole days. It was 5 days less each month which is huge to me. I have PCOS and have had irregular periods since I was 12. It wasn't until I was 30 that I found that I had PCOS. It has been a journey of learning my body and trying to get everything figured out. I had been doing HIIT workouts for years and changing my diet. Now I'm changing when I eat and I'm doing more gentle workouts through pilates. And it's changing my body so much. As a mom of 3 I'm in the best shape of my life and to know that fasting like a girl is the answer that I've been waiting for is incredible. It's so doable. For me it really isn't so much what I eat it's when I eat and that's what has been life changing. So easy and doable and I can't wait to see what my body continues to do. I'm down 10 pounds and just feeling so good. Thank you for being such an incredible resource. You are really changing lives.

I’d love to share an update with my fasting! I started ADF at the end of April after being extremely weight loss resistant. In 2019 I lost some weight with keto but it all came back early 2020. With this weight gain and after a couple of bouts with covid, my cycle was bye bye. I’m 44 now, but since fall 2020, I had one terrible period, cramping was like timed contractions, it was wild. Since starting fasting I’ve lost 15 lbs and have had some indications of my cycle coming back with some unfortunate breast pain which was a pms symptom I did’t miss. I heard in your videos I may have a problem with progesterone not coming up to start a period and also found a reference to breast pain from unmetabolized estrogen. I bought a women’s 40+ multivitamin, B6 for progesterone support, and something called DIM which I guess helps with the extra estrogen. In THREE DAYS, I started a very normal period!! My Clue app says it was 539 days since the last one and the time before that was 506. I had some very thorough blood tests with my doctor last year that didn’t show my hormones were out of a normal range, so I though this was possible especially after reading your book, but I’m still pretty shocked. Looking back through my Clue app, it looks like I started showing signs of longer cycles which might have been from low progesterone not starting the period back to 2016 but I’ve never had any exposure to info or education on what could be happening. I didn’t even follow your program, just the ADF, so it will be fascinating if this keeps up and I’ll have to start fasting like a girl. Aside from this shocking development, the fasting putting me in control of my weight has been life changing. Seeing the scale budge consistently as a direct result of my effort has changed my outlook on what’s possible as a 44 year old and has also changed my relationship with food. I’m now cooking more, planning meals, keeping more ingredients in the house, eating breakfast - these are normal adult behaviors I have never developed because my constant 2-decades long anxiety around food making me fat. I’m really looking foreword to keeping this momentum going!!

I’m post menopausal and using hormone creams on a cycle that follows the days of the month to keep it simple. Man, does this schedule ever line right up with me! I’ve lost 109 lbs so far using keto and fasting. I’ve found some excellent food swaps like cauliflower rice, Egglife wraps for bread or wraps and Dark chocolate Lilys Almonds to keep me feeling like I’m not even dieting (able to stay in ketosis). I’ve learned to open an avocado and eat it with salt 🧂 yummy! I use LMNT to keep away leg cramps. I’m a little late to it so have to reverse type 2 and stage 0-1 breast cancer, but I feel fantastic most of the time. I’m down to 206 lbs at 5’7” for the first time in a decade, but this time was so easy and therefore sustainable. Loved Fast Like a Girl! Fantastic book!

If you follow Mindy’s advice and nurture yourself the week prior to your period, then that really fixes everything and you’ll be able to fast easily while bleeding. I rested more and took a break from fasting the week prior while upping my complex carbs and guess what-day one of my period, I fasted 36 hrs, next day had a 12 hr eating window, then day 3 did another 36 hr, day four had a normal 12 hr eating window and doing another 36 today!! Still bleeding, and on day 5. Plus most of my pms symptoms were nowhere to be seen this month even though this is only my first cycle following Mindy‘a advice.

I use my Fitbit to help keep track of my cycle and cronometer to track food/water/supplements. My cycle was never regular and I had to go on BC at 12 because of it. With IUD, it's sorta on a schedule, but my Fitbit lets me adjust when it happens each month so I can know what day of my cycle I'm on. I have tested there are other period tracker apps that are good, just haven't used those. I really think it's about finding a rhythm that works for you and your body.

Dr. Mindy, I LOVE "Fast Like a Girl", it changed my life and I tell everyone to read it! I have one question that for some reason I just can't figure out - during the Nurture Phase, where you don't recommend fasting at all, does this mean eat three meals a day plus snacks from the time you wake up until dinner or does it mean 2-3 meals a day, no snacking, timing depends on you (technically isn't this still IF?). What exactly do you recommend for this phase as far as the eating cycle goes?!
@DrMindyPelz

There really is no need for snacks if having 3 meals. Intermittent fasting is 13-15 hours so if you are not going 13 hours between your meals, you're fine. You get to decide for you. 💙

First time fasting. My Husband and I did our first 16/8 fast together as it was day 1 of my cycle. I’m 47 and my period is down to 2.5 days approx 25-29 days apart. Still pretty regular thankfully. This first day Is usually heavy and clot/cramps come with this day. The previous month I was kicked down by a migraine which is unusual, I’ve only had 4 in my entire life, this month as I prepared to learn how to fast and began implementing MCT oils and a different type of workout geared towards perimenopause women, I had no migraine, slight touch of headaches for 2 days before my cycle but the headache I expected never happened. Fast forward to the first ever fast, even though I had clotting I never cramped. No pain, I did feel some fatigue but that was after I broke the fast with a few slices of avocado and a half cup of home made chicken/herbal bone broth. About an hour later I wanted a nap. And I was hungry. I made a bowl of yogurt (3 tbsp of raw full fat yogurt with 1/2 cup of non fat unflavored organic Greek yogurt) I mixed in a tsp of organic wheat grass powder, pinch of cinnamon and a half of a nectarine. My energy skyrocketed and I felt superb. I grew up sensitive to high fat dairy and always ran from it. It’s my desire to convert to raw organic dairy because I choose not to own the weakness of this body and full fat dairy. A lot of changes are being implemented and I am amazed that after 1 fast my cramps were non existent and not a sign of a headache was present after the fast. I will continue to follow your guidelines on women’s cycles and fasting. I am a true believer and no longer afraid to fast. Thank you!

I think I'm going to track my basal temp to get a better idea about my true cycle and not just what my app tells me. Lol Also going to make sleep more of a priority this next month and see if that helps. I am very consistent with my fasts, i followed two months of the regular schedule and threw in several 24 and 36 hr fasts at the appropriate times. One month I followed the alternative schedule. I have watched the interview with Dr. Mindy Pelz on the channel Diary of a CEO and have read the book Fast like a girl. I got excited about fasting and started following the steps described in the book to fast throughout the cycle varying the length of the fast and the foods that I eat at each stage of the cycle. I have been doing it for 2 months now also trying to do longer 24 hour fasts one time per cycle right after the period and before ovulation. However, so far fasting has been problematic for me in one major and one minor respects. The minor respect is that after longer one-day fast, for 3-4 days, I started experience episodes of fainting. I must mention that I train martial arts every day (which is a quite intensive training). So, perhaps it has something to do with that, and I should try increasing the amount of food I eat straight after longer fasts. The major problem, however, is the fact that I started crying every day. It comes as a wave and just covers me till I start crying. It happens several times throughout the day. Before, I also experienced such episodes but only 2-3 days before the period and on rare occasions when feeling overwhelmed. I must mention that I have much shorted cycle length than some: specifically, 21 days. The cycle is very regular. I was just wondering if someone experienced the same when starting fasting and if it is quite normal and adjust later on. Thank you!
@DrMindyPelz
10 ай бұрын
Fasting can affect people differently. If you're experiencing fainting after longer fasts, consider increasing your food intake, especially given your intense martial arts training. The emotional sensitivity and increased crying may be related to hormonal changes, which can be influenced by fasting. Given your shorter 21-day cycle, your body may need time to adapt1

Thank you, Dr. Mindy Pelz! The plan was to continue with fasting for, at least, the next 3 months, and see if the body adapts. If not, however, it might be more damaging rather than beneficial: at least, mentally so. Thank you!

During your period is your power phase one and when you can do longer fasts. I'm not sure what would cause those reactions for you as we are all different. Do you have electrolytes while you fast? 💚🙏

@@DrMindyPelz No, I only drink water or naturally flavoured carbonated drinks (like Bubbly) during my fast. However, I will add the electrolytes and see if that helps. @@DrMindyPelz thank you for answering this, as I've been wondering the same except for me it's depo provera. I did 2x 20 hr fasts 2 wks ago combined with various lengths and my weight loss program (eating cleaner + exercise) and last week varied lengths and 1x 24 hr fast and there was a noticeable difference btwn the 2 wks, not sure if due to the difference in 2x 20 hr or the 1x 24 hrs but the weight loss comparison was approx 2 lbs vs 4 lbs in 1 wk. Mind you I'm just starting week 3 of a 9 wk plan before going to maintenance to reset since I have a lot of weight to lose (over 50 lbs - long story!) but it's incredible the gains made with a single 24 hr fast vs 2 20 hr fasts.

Yes. You can do longer fasts within the first 10 days. I'm in peri-menopause myself. I'll be 48 next month. I noticed my periods to disregulate around age 45. I'd skip one around December (stressful time of the year with 3 kids), so I chalked it up to stress. Now, a month before my 48th birthday I've had 2 consecutive "missed" cycles. It's driving me nuts!! As a menopausal woman, did your periods just stop one day? Or did the fluctuate in and out until finally they stopped for a year?

@@Leo-mr1qz I am 47 and went into menopause last summer. I'm healthy and active, I guess due to stress I went a bit earlier but it is still under the normal range. It went gradually, missing periods with longer gaps and then summer 2021 just some sort of spotting, and nothing afterwards. To be honest, I feel relief and free at the same time. Now I want to try 30 days @Dr.MindyPelz fast. Do not be upset about not-regularity, I was the same but then I realized to let go and let nature do the thing.

Just came to say hello and that I'm so excited to start my IF journey. YT kept pushing your podcast with Diary of a CEO at me for weeks and I finally caved and clicked on it. WOW. Just wow! I've watched it twice now and sent it to my sister and close friends. I also purchased Fast Like a Girl and it will arrive just in time for my next cycle to start. In the six years after having my daughter, my hormones have been so out of whack and I've been so unhappy with how my body looks and feels. I kept finding myself getting motivated to make a change, starting a new workout, trying to eat healthier and then BOOM. Motivation disappears, I have no desire to keep going and I start eating my feelings of disappointment. I've been tracking my cycle in the Clue app for years, but I never knew that different hormones were happening throughout the month. Listening to your podcast and going back through the data in that app REALLY opened my eyes and validated what you were saying. Progesterone hits me really hard - but now I can put a name to it and I'll be damned if I let her continue to bring me down! So, thank you Dr. Mindy. THANK YOU for continuing to spread the word and creating a vault of amazing information here on YT so that I can binge-watch everything to get prepared :)
