@Schism Circle the curb is especially high. Making split second decisions in traffic you sometimes find yourself in a badway... the drive tires won't easily climb through the curb.. its easier to carefully keep trying to go forward then to back out into unempathtic or impatient car drivers. So the high curb and the Jack knifed trailer is causing a lot of pressure in the drive tires and the fifth wheel plate. He's trying to be careful. You can't judge his iq.

A Couple of years ago I was hauling merchandise for Charming Charlie from Houston, TX to Chicago, IL. to open a new store. In all my years of delivering to Chicago, I have never been routed downtown for a delivery location, but I figured it's a department store so what could go wrong...right? The address was 520 N Michigan Ave #323 Chicago, IL 60611. I was instructed to call someone on location when I arrived and they would unload me. When I called the guy and said I was here, he said "You Are Where?" I said "At your location". He said "No your not, I don't see you!". The store was on N. Michigan Ave. but the loading area was below me on Lower Michigan Ave. The guy gave me directions on how to get down there, but all of the turnpikes that lead to Lower Michigan Ave. were clearly marked with the No Trucks Sign. When I called him back and told him about this, he said "Don't be stupid, just come on down here anyway. I told him I'm not going to go where it's clearly marked that I can't go. He called me a F***ing Moron!!! I found a safe place to park and called my dispatcher. after an hour of phone calls between the shipper, the consignee, and my dispatcher it was finally realized by the A-hole consignee that I was hauling a 53' dry box trailer. He thought I was in a 6 wheel box truck, found out later another driver from a different company drove down there anyway with a 53' dry box trailer the day before and got his truck and trailer wedged into the upper deck! Who's the F**ing moron now? When people who don't drive trucks for a living see a truck driver do something stupid, understand it's not always the drivers fault.

There are warehouses throughout the city running directly by the low clearance L tracks, right by packed residential areas. I see a lot of these guys will run teams so they can shut down traffic both ways and assist to back it in. He should have trip planned better, but now he's in a bad situation. You can't just back, you'll hit something. There's always a car on your ass, and some horrible prick with a camera. I have no desire to deliver within the city and I live here. Looking at the situation, I would have got out of the truck to see how I could reposition the tractor, asked for someone to help me with my blind spots, used my 3 road hazard triangles to warn approaching traffic, or shift my gear in reverse and backed out from the jackknife slowly. Please, you don't have the bragging rights to critique the skill of a tractor-trailer driver if you don't live the life an Over-The-Road CDL Class A driver. That is probably a really difficult turn if you don't know it. Besides, he/she probably not around that area to know it and get it right. Remember, its along vehicle turning, and thus need to make wide turns. Have some respect.

+Don-York With you all the way there but if you are a driver then you should know at that point he should back off the curb and circle the block to try again and if that's not a option call for a traffic cop to assist. I'm sure you know all he will do trying to make the turn like that is snap a axle or worse.

Don-York I agree but when you see that's not working, stop get out and see if it's clear behind you and back a few feet to make a better turn. That clearly wasn't working and he could damage his equipment

So everyone's a truck driver all of a sudden. Okay but it doesn't take an expert to see that the guy in the video should have given up, backed out, and continued along to find somewhere else to turn.

I live one block from this corner. It is completely do-able if you take it wide enough. If he isn't smart enough to make the turn he won't be smart enough to back up. Idk how these dudes get jobs driving in the city...

Not true. If he sets brakes and gets out and makes a scene that he is backing out the people will chill and let it happen. Those are risks we take out here. Judgment calls are made everyday. Most are right. But some are wrong. Container pullers usually suck ass just like otr guys at making good decisions in these circumstances so I'm not surprised. But as city guys we do this shit all the time. The best approach it to TAKE YOUR TIME. so this nonsense doesn't happen. He obviously was kissing the curb and set up a horrific angle that shouldn't have been attempted. Straight rookie status. That said. Camera douche should've offered advice or a lookout for the driver

I worked at a gas station as a teenager and one time this semi-truck driver pulled into my pump area, and after stopping briefly, he began to back up. Soon he was headed straight for a big stack of crated Coke bottles (the kind where the wood crate comes about 1/3 way up the bottle and the neck and mouth stick out), and was about to make a hell of a mess if he hit them. I bolted out of the office toward his cab to flag him to stop. By the time I got to his cab window, he was already alongside the soda crates and had missed them by maybe 2 inches. I ran up and said something like, "HEY MISTER! YOU KNOW YOU JUST MISSED HITTING A WHOLE STACK OF SODA BOTTLES BACK THERE?!" He looked at me cool as a cucumber, paused a moment to formulate his reply, and said, "Did I have an inch between my tire and the bottles?" I looked back and said, "Yeaah. ...but not much MORE than that." He looked me right in the eye and said (with an unbelievable cool factor that I have rarely seen in all my days) "Well, that's all I need." At that moment, I thought that driver dude was about as cool as it gets.

He most likely tried to turn this was to keep from getting into the lain of travel for on coming traffic which is exactly what He should have done. If you wanna be's think this is so easy then get yourself a truck and have it!

Lol this guy did not swing out far enough. Then his lack of experience , looks like more of lack of brain. I can drive downtown Chicago no problems. But see I'm a super trucker there are many of us out there. I could make that turn with a 53footer too......if he would have gotten that other tire up on the curbthe trailer was also hitting the other curb it would have rolled over

I drove trucks for 17 years throughout the 48 contiguous states and Canada and have to wonder if this person ever got out of the tractor to see whether what he/she was contemplating on doing was even possible! Admittedly, Chicago and New York are some difficult cities to drive 18 wheelers in, been there and done that. Hope this driver came out okay and one thing is for sure they'll set themselves up better if they ever come back to this site.

From the looks of the area I'd say this is an example of why downtown areas should be off-limits to 18-wheelers. Makes it easier for everybody. I can't imagine how stressful it is trying to navigate in places like that. If it can't be delivered in a box truck, then it doesn't get delivered.

There’s a couple things that come to mind when judging his turn. Looking underneath his trailer at the rear front axle tandem it appears his trailer swing is going to be okay on the inside. On the outside it’s not clear if there is a vehicle which would make his trailer swing out. Based on my observations, it appears this guy went into his turn wrong. As a truck driver there is a few tricks you can do to get through tight corners. But without the big picture and being in his position I can’t really tell why he isn’t back out of that position and trying a new approach. That tells me he is a rookie. But who knows, none of us was there.

I used to work at an extremely large port facility. Dumbest driver I ever saw, was a guy who obviously forgot to secure the twistlocks on his skel after collecting a DV40. I was going home, and he drove past me at speed. He was stopped at the roundabout about half a mile away, as was everybody else. He'd gone round the roundabout. His 40' box, however, had not, and was now lying on it's side in the road, blocking it.
