Thank you for reminding me how awesome 2009 was for film My top 5 is as follows 5. 9 - I love this movie simply from its premise, the post apocalyptic setting, the horror of the robot monsters, as well as the inner conflicts between the group as their ideologies clash. 4. Fantastic Mr. Fox - The film is really witty and funny, from the dialogue to the characters, the stop motion is incredibly enjoyable and I love how they expanded on the story to be more relatable. Also the “cuss” usage is still my favorite stand in for swearing. 3. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs - This film is a guilty pleasure, but I love it. It still boggles the mind how they turned a simple picture book into a lengthy plot with characters and conflicts. Just how much they can do with food is impressive enough, but there’s also really funny character moments, humorous dialogue and some sweet scenes too. I also love the energy it has the the exaggerated facial expressions and movements. It definitely leaves a good taste in my mouth (and a sad reminder how much Sony Animation has soured) 2. Up - This is still my favorite Pixar film. It never fails to make me cry, and the message it tells is timeless. I love how easily Pixar was able to mix fantastical elements with real world emotions about loss and grief, and how life itself is an adventure. 1. Coraline - I fell in love with this movie when I saw it in theaters. So much imagination and creativity wrapped in dark fantasy, adventure layered over horror. The stop motion is beautiful, fluid and lends to the fantasy of the other world with its colors and vibrancy, only for it to fall away once it starts becoming more unraveled. Coraline remains one of my favorite animated films of all time.

They showed it at my school(we would choose what activities we would do on the last week of the year and I was in the group that chose to watch a movie). And... My 14 year old self wasn't ready for this movie... I thought we would watch a happy fun stop animation movie... But it made me feel awfully depressed and bad by the end of it instead, and I couldn't even sleep that night because of it...it was pretty dark... It's not thaaaat dark, but still, it kinda was for 14 year old me. I wish I had chose to be in the group that would learn make housemade hand sanitizer that day ='D And even remembering this movie makes me feel bad... But the fault was not on the movie, it was me who was a pretty sensible child and watched it at the wrong time, maybe because a thing or other kinda hit back at home. If I had watched it a couple years later when I was mature enough, it probably would be one of my favorites of the year, since I like depressing stories and such.

About 7 years ago, I was subscribing to my first youtube channels. I was a young fandom kid, big into mlp and other animated shows, and i can’t be certain but i think cellspex was one of the first channels I ever subscribed to. To this day it’s the one that stuck out of all of the others. About a week ago I was thinking about animated movies i hadn’t watched yet, and my mind wandered back to your original 2009 ranking list, a video I hadn’t thought about in years. I remembered you called it a golden year for animation, and I took two of your recommendations that weekend. I’m currently forcing everyone I know to watch 9 and Fantastic Mr Fox. In a media landscape where reviews of films are now as likely to be childhood nostalgia as films themselves, nothing means more than a video that can make me take a decade-old recommendation. I’m glad you made this video again, and i’m glad you still do these.

When is the year we get ood animated movies that outnumber the bad Cause there is just so much bad. I remember 2009 and I went on a animated movie watchinh spree and it was awesome. But now it's just a bunch of kid's movies.

9 holds a special place in my heart. 2009 has been my favorite year to date, so a movie that came out in that year that I have such good memories of watching as a little kid will obviously _always_ hold a special place in my heart.

It kills me that large-scale traditional animation is falling by the wayside since 3D animation is less time-consuming and expensive. I don't hate 3D animation necessarily, but 2D is so beautiful and fascinating and timeless imo.

And to add to it, it's also when animation was experimental and a true art, nowadays some studios are putting out animation just for a cash grab and kids flick. *cough, cough* Illuminations, Blue Sky, Dreamworks, Sony... On the other side Disney, Pixar, Laika, Ghibli still stand strong! Kubo is cool but Laika's best is still their first movie.

While I agree that Coraline is the best, their first project was actually Corpse Bride. But they more helped creating it, rather than creating themselves.

2008 was also pretty bad apart from WALL-E and Kung Fu Panda, so I think you may be underestimating how much of a blip 2009 was and how many studios back then still only pandered to children and clueless parents. 2009 was just an excellent year. Every few years we get a year where the animation stars align and studios put out their best work all at once. I think 2014 and 2016 were the last years like that.

As much as 2009 is one of the best years for animated films, in terms of animation overall, I think I'd have to give the edge to 2010. 2009 in terms of TV animation was utterly abysmal apart from one or 2 exceptions at least in terms of new shows. 2010 on the other hand, while not quite at the standard of 2009 in terms of animated films, surpasses 2009 overall in terms of animation when factoring in the animated series of that year.

I had a big comment written but I lost it. So I'll do it again, but as i ranked them in my blog post. Planet 51: Meh Battle for Terra: you forgot this one. It's ambitious but Average Monsters Vs Aliens: Felt too restrained but sitll fun Ice Age 3: I think 2 is the best of the sequels but this was still fun enough for me./ Astro Boy: Yep, i quite like this one. Had some nice moments and was a solid watch. A Christmas Carol: Creepy motion capture aside, a solid take on the story. Ponyo: Very cute with quirky humor that i dug. 9: Weak charecters but solid world. Secret of Kells: I wish i LOVED it like i wanted to it, as the lead was a bit weak and i wish the ending took up more of it. Still, quite good. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: Very funny and nice. Fantastic Mr Fox: Really charming and well crafted. Princess and the Frog: Not top 5 Disney but top 10 at least. Up: Slightly agree with some of the tone issues, but otherwise, very great. Coraline: Was close but i loved this just a bit more. Great creepy-ness and great story.
