This is the iconic Mission speaker. Truly Mission is a "one-hit wonder" speaker company, hence the absolute necessity to resurrect this model, AS WAS, in order to save it from the ashcan of Audio History...EVERY single Mission speaker I've heard other (IOW, after...🙄) than the 770 that followed it, including the "770 Freedom" were/are puerile!😬🙉😲😰😝😛 The Cyrus line of electronics that followed was decent enough, & undoubtedly saved the company.🤔 A superb review Andrew, I also liked hearing Kristi's comments & POV as the commentary of 2 intelligent & highly perceptive connoisseurs is better than one! You absolutely NAILED 🔨🔨🔨 the sound of the speakers. Even though I have yet to hear these reissues, your descriptions of their sound is EXACTLY what the originals that I know so well & spent many years listening to sound like. This suggests that the team at Mission (IAG? Peter Comeau, then?) got this authentic as possible! Hopefully not down to making a carbon copy of the original (SEAS?) tweeter, which was one of the very first to use the miracle 💩 known as "ferrofluid" to enhance power handling & nothing else 🙉😛🔨. It gave the original a "shiny" colouration that turned into outright GLARE in the trebles, & the ferrofluid oil in the voice coil gap would dry up & increase viscosity or otherwise get "contaminated" just after the warranty ran out (!🙄😡), sooner with the injudicious use if the volume control (Ahem!), & then the treble became frankly UNLISTENABLE at that point 😱😨😵😵😵😢! Mission were nevertheless good enough to send my friend a fresh set of replacement tweeters, gratis(!!!), despite the recent expiration of their 5 year warranty!😮😘 The 770's were enough of a revelation in their time to still be a breath of fresh air now. But what they did in late '70s Britain was quite the shock to English ears bred & used to the likes of QUAD ESL's, various commercialised BBC Monitors (LS3/5a, LS6, LS5/9...), giant IMF transmission line jobs, KEF's, and Bowers & Wilkins DM2/II's, DM6's ("the Pregnant Penguin"😉) & oh so polite DM7's... Instead of being like all those; modest pieces of Victorian parlour furniture designed to blend into room corners & with soft trebles, low efficiency & "polite" dynamics, unfocused & vague imaging, & thuddy bloated bass that was closer to sonic diahorrea than actual distinct & recognisable notes!😪😴🤒 Then along comes this bolt from the blue, lighting the blue touch paper!💥😯😮 Designed to played with dowdy front grilles removed, IN YO FACE! white front panel with GIANT logo in a bleeding edge modern script, with some of the tightest bass you'll ever hear but not "enhanced" by not going very low, an utterly neutral presentation with that *very* slight hint of artfully-judged midrange forwardness, a soaring treble of near frightening speed & exquisite articulation, a remarkably "boxless" presentation with dynamics all out of proportion to the compact enclosure & more like a professional monitor speaker in a Rock Music Studio! Suddenly, English speaker design was catapulted forward 10 years; leaving the "Pipe & Slippers" crowd dazed & confused like deer caught in the headlights of oncoming traffic! Too bad about the cheesy stands on these new ones. And no, they appear to be decent in your video...🤔😕 As for comparing an Abbey Road grade of studio monitor to a bunch of incredibly coloured, off-the-charts distortion DIRTBAG drivers made from recycled carboard & mated to ringing, resonant, & SQUONKing horns, with NO evidence that any particular effort was put into having these CRAP drivers mate to one another with a crossover much more complicated than a scramble-wound coil of 22ga wire & a single 5μF, 5¢ electrolytic capacitor, all thrown into a big, HIGHLY resonant, empty-sounding MDF box w/o any apparent sound absorbing materials used inside it, AT ALL, that sounds no better than the glue & sawdust that MDF is made of, that MAY🤔, SORT OF,😕 "KINDA"🤒 sound "OK"🤓 at a VERY low volume, but then sounds like an ongoing TRAIN WRECK as soon as you turn up the volume up beyond a whisper (or more than 2 instruments try to play simultaneously!😜)... There IS, NO, comparison!!! I'm glad I don't own speakers that emulate a live rock or pop concert sound. Because I can't count on one finger ANY of the dozens of live shows I've ever attended that didn't leave my ears TERRORISED 😱😱😱 & ringing, & just plain HURTING 😬🙉😬🙉😬 for days after from the singularly AWFUL 💩 NOISE I was subjected to in a venue with acoustics worse than the public bathrooms in a train station by speakers with badges like "Altec" "JBL" "Klipsch" & "University" plastered on their FUGLY beat-up & abused cabinets!!! 🙄🔫

I used to work for Mission when I lived in England. I knew the Azima brothers, Henry and Farad very very well. Peter Comeau has kept the Mission sound alive and brought the latest technology to these speakers without sacrificing what Farad and Henry had in mind with the original 770's, still my favorite Missions. Your excellent review paid tribute to a wonderful company and the listening pleasure thousands of audiophiles around the world have experienced. I'm getting mine soon!

Back in the late 90s, my first hifi separates system included the Mission 731 speakers. Cheap at about £130. They gave me the hifi bug, and I soon "upgraded" to B&W 603 S2 at around £700 which were very disappointing. I lived with them for far too many years. However, following a recent house move, and some dusty renovation works, my "good" system is currently boxed up in favour of my sacrificial, old Sony AV amp and Mission 731s - OMG!! I clearly made a mistake upgrading them.... The 770s, hear I come - house renovations, completed !!

Another outstanding review! Thanks. I really enjoyed and agree with your analysis on different speaker types. Horn, electrostatic, planar, etc. Having recently owned Cornwall IV's, Wharfedale Lintons and a few others I now have Magnepan 3.7i's. I'm quite happy with them but still enjoy other types. I also own Rogers LS3/5A's and a pair of CSS Criton 2TDX tower kits. Each has a very different sound and I enjoy them all. I also kind of miss my CW's and may end up buying another pair of Heritage speakers. I'm watching the used market since Klipsch fixed their pricing with dealers. Your description of the differences in sound, live vs studio and the type of speaker is just about as perfect a description as I have heard. Thanks to you and Kristi for your reviews. I watch every one of them! I'd love to hear your thoughts on Magnepan as well as a review of Harbeth and Spendor as they both have a unique presentation. Just a thought.

Here in the UK Mission is more known for their budget speakers (cheap). The Mission LX2 is the only mission speaker I've heard and for it's current price of £59 ($72), its a bargain. At the high end, UK brands like ATC, PMC, Spender and Harbeth get lots of love from their fans and these brands don't have friendly budget options. I think Mission isn't as loved as it should be due to their budget friendly options (some people might say cheap options / hifi gatekeepers).

Question though, I have a pair of Model 5’s in a smaller room I am looking at a pair of Forte’s for a much larger room, I also love the live presence that the Fortes give. Would a speaker like the Mission just give me a better / more refined Model 5 “sound” I really want something different so I can have multiple sonic experiences. Within the same house.

Good looking speaker and great review! At about the 1:30 mark, you teased that maybe pairing it with an A/V Receiver (your RZ50) was not the best idea? I'm still not sure why, and maybe I need more information. With the modern A/V receivers out there (like the Marantz SR8015 or the RZ50 you mentioned), is this still a valid thing? I am glad that you tried it out. Is there something that I'm really missing when it comes to A/V receiver vs. standalone amps? I just want one piece of equipment to do it all for me. Am I wrong? Like you always say, the only one that has to be happy with the sound of my system, is me..... but am I really missing something by not trying out an amp?

There's definitely a difference. There is nothing wrong with a receiver if you're going to use all the features like you would need in a HT system. I agree with Kristi. I like the logo on the front. Is it overstated? Sure, compared to most brands, but i think it looks good when combined with the white front. It helps that the text is classy and it's not a cheap glued on logo plate. As to the stands, well, that was a straight budgetary, we want to make more money, copout on the part of Mission. When looking at the Lintons, the stands are as much a work of art as the speakers. When spending $5k, i'd expect the stands to have as much thought put into the design as they put into the speaker and logo. The money saving afterthought they obviously are is pretty awful at this price point.

Yeah, it seems like a real missed opportunity on their part. Hell, the Linton stands cost $500 if you buy them separately. No one complains about the Linton's being "too expensive" at $2000 with $500 stands. Sounded great in the showroom, not so great at home and yes I had very high end gear in my systems back then. 5k... I paid less than 1k for my 770's and even using an inflation calculator from what i paid, I would have enough money to purchase the KLH 5's with a little bit left over. If they sound as great as you think maybe then at 2.5k they might merit some consideration. I think your money might be better spent elsewhere, as for me I am getting ready to order Double Impacts.

I couldn't afford them myself back than, but a colleague of mine was the blessed owner of a pair and we listened to music often; played on his HiFi set. I had Sansui AU 719 integrated amplifier, a Sansui TU 719 tuner, a turntable (can not remember brand nor type) and a very sophisticated Kenwood cassette deck (model...?). The most downstream part of my setup back than was a pair of AR14 loudspeakers.

Great review and commentary, as always! I am really interested in your opinion of the CSS Criton 1TDX w/upgraded Xover. Yes they are DIY, but you can get them assembled and delivered for around $2500. I built a pair and they are really astounding for their DIY price of $1300. Really curious what you would think!

Those massive Mission logos are a major dealbreaker for me. The classic design is nice but large brand “stickers” on living room would annoy so much :D

About 30 years ago I went to a dealer to hear a pair of Kef Reference One speakers. The dealer said he had a pair of Mission speakers in same price range. I knew nothing about that brand but I gave it a go. We listened to classical music and rock music. The listening session took a little bit longer than 3 hours. It was a close call but the Kef was my favorite. Later on I was in the market for a desktop solution and without thinking I bought a pair of small Missions and they were fantastic. So I can imagine that the new Missions are sounding great. Greetings, Ludo Belgium

This is such a well organized review considering the breadth of topics discussed. Thank you for breaking down the comparisons between speakers and for making the point that horns/e-stats/intimate speakers aren’t the same and shouldn’t be considered as such. Cheers

Nice review! Always good to see you vibing with a product. I'm a Maggie fan at this point, not sure I could move away from their style of presentation. I'm really hoping that they are brought into the conversation here in a more meaningful way as I'm sure they are cross shopped with speakers that you review, but I also understand they can be difficult to get a hold of as far as review samples. Anyway, thought I'd pop in and drop a comment for your algorithm ;) Cant wait to see what's next!

I have a pair of Mission 780's from the early 80's. Spent many, many hours with them over a lot of years. Loved the sound these produced. Over time, my tweeters have given up and there are no replacements I can locate. If these new 770's are nearly as good I can understand the price / value proposition.

These era Missions have ferrofluid in the tweeters that dries and thickens with age and muffles the voice coil. I’m about to attempt to replace the ferrofluid on my 760’s and am wishing for a renewed sound.

Great Review Andrew and Kristi! Man I wish I had the money the afford these bad boys! Side note, since you guys really liked the Tannoy Monitors, I'm wondering if you have any plans on reviewing speakers from Fyne Audio, like the F500?

Hi, My Question? I still have to get a reviewer to take a old Mission 770 Antique set and set them up with a new Mission 770 set and get them to be compared to each other. For some reason everyone miss this. Would like to get a review on this.

Retro 70s good looks and not made in China. These are going to the top of my list. Although, no online retailer here in Australia will list their price AUD, which tells me one thing... The markup will be stupid-expensive! Looks like I'm waiting to buy used on HiFi Shark. So sick of Australian HiFi retailers thinking we've all got too much money and not enough brains to know what this stuff is actually worth. I see gear marked up 10-fold over the US time & time again, which also tells me the retailers are right! There's to many rich morons who will probably blindly pay $10k+ AUD for these. *smh

My first step into "higher end" speakers came in 1989 when I bought a pair of Mission Cyrus 781's monitor speakers. I went to a "Hi-end" store for the first time and was just so impressed with the vocals these speakers could produce. I bought them.

Nice product, great review. Just a simple question, you used fairly expensive amps to power them, any thoughts, when reviewing other speakers, to also use those old Pioneers, the SX450 and 780 as power sources? Frankly I like them better with the grills on, much cleaner look.

This type of FR will grab my attention right off the bat, and I don't mind the looks or stands if they perform as you stated...it's usually about compromises when it comes to speakers. The price is where they lost me. Not saying they aren't worth it, they do seem well engineered, 5k for basically a bookshelf speaker is too rich for my pocket.

For those of us old enough to remember the original 770, the speakers would not be mission without the logo. You have to understand the culture of the late 70's early 80's to understand the oversized logo.

My first exposure to high-end audio was listening to my dad's 770s as a kid. Then I got my first set of speakers and I learned the generally accurate 'you get what you pay for' lesson.

Great review guys, obviously i haven't heard the latest 770's that said my favourite mission speakers i used to own were the 752 Freedoms, simply wonderful speakers and only £650 (about $1000)? Although that was back in 1996. I honestly think they would still be right up there with speakers today between £1500-£2000

The problem with talking about Mission speakers is they tended to use the same model numbers over different generations. Mission 770s were way off the affordability scale when i first got into audio but around the mid-90s, they had the 780SE which could be stretched to by serious punters. They were good with British amps of their price class but could cause looks of shock when a big American muscle amp’s power was shoved up their terminals. The immediate following generation (which the 751 model was part of) seemed to had lost the musical verve for my tastes back then.
