I remember these diesel power generators very well, when I was a boy I would hang around outside the KMU building and look through the door or window to see and hear the engines run, originally these 2 engines along with a bigger 6 cylinder and and a 7 cylinder diesel that was turbocharged turned a total of 4 dynamos that generated stand by electricity for the town when NSP power was not available. Once in a while the operators would catch me peeking and on occasion invite me in for a tour and if I was lucky I would get a bottle of pop. Some of the men that operated these engines that are not around anymore were, Marvin Danielson (Superintendent) Russ Lehman, Rudy Sortedahl and Julius Bonhus.

They are alive !! They eat , breathe have oil in their veins , sometimes become emotional but are always there to be relied upon to do their job !😄 Absolutely magic to watch ! Thank you 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I bet they're still capable of generating power there's a reason things that age last so long got to get back and see them

I see they are not synchronized with each other. It is nice to see direct drive exciter generators for voltage control.
@majobis

It is kind hard to synchronize them. They are started at different times.And nothings really hooked up to it with no loads on the engines. I see them run every time I go to the show there each year. The building rattles pretty good when those things are running.

I live just SW of Hastings and would like to see these myself.
Worthington Industries is still around.......If you ever come down 71 to north Columbus, Ohio, there is Worthington facility where 71 intersects 270......Right across is a gargantuan Budweiser Brewery and Icehouse.

It just for show during the open house every year. I have a picture of a description of the generators but do not remember if the horsepower specs was on the description or not. I am sure there are others that could fill you in on the numbers. Since they seem to be inline 4 cylinders, I imagine the bore size is pretty big.

@@nopegaming2117 Yeah it does, but it puts out something like 3000 volts. Too bad they didn't have it running when this video was shot. That would have been kinda cool. 😁

the engines weren't synchronized. Apparently, only one was driving a load, if either were.
@majobis
2 жыл бұрын
Both of these engines are not driving any loads whatsoever. They are started by compressed air once the flywheel is set at the correct position. Then then the demonstration shows the start up procedure, they get fired up and run just for show. It would not take much to get the generators to turn out electrical power once hooked up. It sure is something else to feel the vibrations of both engines running.

That must be impressive to see that. I hear a variety of engine sizes mostly on diesel locomotives with the 2 stroke engines sounding better over the 4 stroke ones.
