Hi! The line on a katana is called the hamon. It’s from differential hardening. They use clay on the top part before hardening the blade, making the spine softer and more ressiliant to impact. The line is just made visible by the polisher

i think the finish on the Begg clip is called Broken Ice. and the wave one the Marfione blade looks like a traditional hamon line, which is differential hardness treatment done with clay over the bade. clay protects blade and leaves the part under it with a lower hardness level, thus helping the total blade strength...basically ;)

I was very surprised when Jack didn't know what a hamon was. I mean, he says a lot about the craft and I know that he knows a ton about knives. Technically, he was half right. The line does appear only after the polishing, but the structure of the steel that allows for that appearance is caused by the heat treatment differential through cementing the spine portion or something related to that process.

I have a number of custom knives ranging between $1000-$5000. Yes, it tales a long time to save up for them, and I've had to wait many years for them because the makers I buy from are usually back ordered by a good two years. I Think my two favorites are my Todd Begg Bodega and my Marfione custom HALO V. But my really expensive knives are antiques. And yes, I do carry most of my customs. Paying a lot of money for a custom knife is no different than paying a lot of money for a custom firearm, a comic book collection, or any other hobby that eats up disposable income. As long as the family is taken care of, and your bills are payed, I see nothing wrong in spending money on a hobby you enjoy.

Never. If I had $10,000 I would build a proper workshop like I have always dreamed of having and be the guy MAKING the $10,000 knives. At least that's my dream in life and has been for the longest time. As a kid I would daydream about forging swords and axes and knives, you name it. I've read books dating back to the early 1800's about blacksmithing and spent hundreds of hours on youtube learning about smithing and stock removal methods for making blades.

The thing about a 10k knife is that nobody "who has 10k" will buy one. People with millions of dollars will, because 10k is such a low percentage of their total wealth. Whereas a 10k workshop can be considered as a source of future income, making it more realistic for someone with a total wealth of, say, 50k can drop 1/5th of their savings into such a project.

The line on the Marfione Strider collaboration is caused due to quenching a portion of the knife, then the rest of it, and you get that line which is actually a slightly higher HRC than the rest of the knife, the problem though is it's really hard to do properly, and can entirely trash a blade if done incorrectly. Looks awesome though.

The line on the Marfione//Stride knife is called a hamon. If you ever watch a video on how a katana is made that is created when the sword is fired for the final time and then quenched. It represents two different hardened areas on the sword itself. If you get a chance I suggest looking up how a traditional katana is made it will blow your mind.

_"Would You Buy a $10,000 Knife?"_ It's just a matter of circumstance for me. Would I buy THIS knife for $10,000.? No, but if I had sufficient disposable income I would certainly buy knives that grabbed me in that price range. Their brilliant craftsmanship, rarity, and uniqueness would not only be incredible to own, but would exponentially increase in value over time as an investment. My favorite in this group is the 'The Hunt' from Begg Knives. VERY much enjoy these custom knife videos you guys do, I hope you do many more. Let's be honest here, there is an abundance of your more 'standard' knife videos all over KZitem and elsewhere, but this level of blade art is what drives me to reach higher and hopefully one day be able to afford one.

That wave like line is the called the Hamon. It’s basically showing where the harder steel for the edge meets the softer steel of the spine. The harder edge allows for the wicked sharpness and the softer spine helps the the blade to be more impact resistant to prevent fracturing in the blade. There are a few different techniques to achieve the Hamon but using clay is probably the most common. Also you are not wrong in the sense that the polish is what helps you to see the Hamon. Such a beautiful knife though. Take it easy on the guy. It’s ok that he didn’t know that was a Hamon. He’s not a knife maker and judging off his own collection of knives from past videos he doesn’t own anything with a Hamon so he may have never had the need to know what it was. Plus we are all learning new things everyday. Rather than ripping people for not knowing things why not teach them and be happy for their progression. Not one person here was born with the knowledge of what a Hamon was. We all had to learn that at some point. The knife community should be happy that there are people like him that are that excited about knives. Mahalo brother for the great videos 🤙🏾

So many inaccuracies... The Tighe Fighter does NOT use proprietary hardware, it uses standard Torx bits. The screws are simply custom machined. Rockstead's grind is called a "hamaguri" grind, which is NOT a convex edge! Rockstead also calls this grind a "honzukuri" grind as their's features a proprietary microbeveled edge. Convex edges are a rounded bevel added to any standard grind. Hamaguri is a grind style where the entire grind is rounded and tapers down to the final edge with no bevel. It's one continuous grind. Also, the Rockstead handle is DLC coated, but the blade is NOT! The blade is a San-Mai construction of VG-10 outer and ZDP-189 core hardened to 67 hrc. Then of course there's the hamon faux pas everyone below has already mentioned. Also, "Juyo Polish" is more an American marketing moniker than an actual thing. There are sword rating systems that rate the best swords, and of them, the Juyo Token is the best; however there's no "Juyo Polish" that exists as a thing in Japan. It's simply borrowing the name from the top rated sword and applying it to the polish to infer that it too, is the best. Of course Blade HQ is just going by what Marfione has told them on the polish and not necessarily widely known info on obscure sword rating systems and polishes. Totally not trying to be a jerk, just figure that a show about blades and information on them should be more accurate and not have complete contradictory info in it. Especially when the knives are so expensive, you should know exactly what it is you're buying. I enjoy all the Blade Banter and stuff BHQ puts out, they do a phenomenal job; however maybe do a small bit of research into the more technical aspects of knives - especially when presenting extremely technical knives lol.
