That might have been true a few years ago but the majority of those people got into MAT programs and have worked really hard to get off of the drugs that were so carelessly prescribed. As a result of that, WV has now won a lawsuit and is putting that money back into the community to prevent anything like that from happening again. It’s a large amount of money and I’ve even seen in an article that they don’t even know what to do with the money right now. They’re holding meetings to appoint a board to oversee the money and what it goes into. You can see the breakdown of how much money each county is being awarded.

I live south of Wheeling, I must say Wheeling is a specific point of real estate that strays from its surroundings. For instance, in my city, these houses would cost you an arm and a leg for what the average worker makes here, Wheeling is just that weird. Also yeah, it's freaking beautiful here, Wheeling is nice (for the view) but there are plenty more places that aren't even that south into WV that show said architecture even better, along with the overall scenery, nature, natural attractions, etc.

Perfect for remote workers who appreciate a slower pace of life. Lots of farms and Amish surround the towns where you can buy fresh homegrown and homemade products. Throw enough money at any small town politician in the OH, WV, or SWPA area and they will lose all moral scruples for their constituents and sell them up the river. The recent natural gas harvesting boom in the area is a great example. They buy up land, wreck the countryside, destroy the already crumbling roadway infrastructure without repairing it, illegally dump fracked water in streams and creeks, promise great jobs for the area; only to bring in out of state crews and hire minimal local workers. They then pack up the operation leaving a skeleton crew and the general area is no better than when it started or sometimes far worse. This is bs. Wheeling, WV is not the cheapest city in the country. The salaries don't match the rental prices because they bounced way up with gas workers. There is a huge box store mall nearby around a Cabela's in Tridelphia which is most of the revitalization. Buying a shell for $10K there is not really a great idea. Buildings were literally crumbling onto people. I think they've fixed some of that. It's an okay place to live if you're a hermit.
@asilahopess_wonderingfae
Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I mean, i think people who think they want to come here need to talk to those of us who have lived here our entire lives. We'll tell you the truth. But you need to talk to people from different parts of one area, and I'd say ages 60 and under. The baby boomers and their now aging parents live/lived very different lives than their children are living here. Older people are living off of mining industry retirement and insurance, that will not be here in the next few decades I'd say. My point is that it is a poor economy and the only way you're going to make money after buying those houses, is to rent them out as air bnbs and pray that the major drug players from different areas of the country that come here and bring their fentanyl laced drugs, don't end up in your air bnb. Or if you're a hermit who works from home, or an already generational wealthy young traveler that loves all things outdoors every season. Other than that, they'll fix those houses up and have a fixed up house. The end. I'm so bitter today. Lol!

Wheeling is actually pretty interesting in that there are large areas of the city, such as around Oglebay Resort, that have more significant concentrations of wealth. Many parts of the city, especially downtown Wheeling and around Center Market, that have become rundown from so many people moving away from the city (and from the aging population) are now centers for revitalization. The city even offers a number of grants to individuals rehabbing these historic homes. This is to say, Wheeling is not a dead city by any means. Several industries are centered here, such as the coal industry and an expanding medical network, other businesses are moving in, and with the Pittsburgh metro area only about an hour away, there is actually quite a lot of promise here.
