They put in a DD intersection in Appleton Wisconsin recently; it's at highway 441 on Oneida Street. I can't even comprehend how anyone could get confused with these interchanges as everything is divided by concrete meridians, the intersections are at angles to each other and the traffic lights are set so you can only see the ones facing your lanes of traffic. 16:27 being from Germany I'm well sued to traffic lights on the near side. It really is NOT that much of a problem. However this situation being a problem can be reduced if traffic lights aren't only high up above the intersection, while both above the intersection and a 2nd one being half-way up the post and thus being perfectly located for drivers up front (car, van, truck drivers) to see it without the need to twist their neck We don't have DDIs in Germany at all. Depending on the size and traffic load of a highway access it wil be controlled either by traffic signs alone with the crossing road being the priority road having the right of way over the exit lanes coming from the highway, or there are traffic lights which are well-timed, either close to or definetly as constant flow intersection. My issue with a DDI would be that you can't keep up flow in both directions of the crossing street at the same time, as they stop each other at one of the two large conflict points I also like the Swedish approach of elevated or lowered large scale roundabouts providing easy and fast, constant flow highway access points without any traffic lights and without any of the serious conflict points. No traffic lights make the entire thing also much much cheaper ... and it also works in dense urban environments with lots of traffic

Both big roundabouts and dumbbells with 2 small roundabouts are great! The dumbbell is the cheaper (especially for retrofits) and more compact option that also gives approaching cars a chance to u turn, so you can ban left turns on the intersection leading up to the highway interchange.
@princekamoro3869

If you think about it, a diamond interchange is just a really skinny roundabout (with vehicles "circling" around the median on the bridge). But then the signs give priority to vehicles entering the "circle," which is a big no-no for roundabouts.

We've started this in Arizona may be shortly before/ after this video. The new South Mountain Loop 202 has two HALF DDI. Half because the streets end at the southside of the freeway so traffic must enter the freeway after going under the bridge. ADOT is currently seeking input about converting the existing standard diamond interchange at I-10 and Baseline Road (just south of the US-60 Superstition Freeway Interchange). That area is very busy and seems to be a favorite project for ADOT to rebuild every 10-years. They are already doing so again now. A major rework of I-10 from the Loop 202 Santan (east)/South Mountain (West) interchange past Baseline and the US 60 Interchange, rebuilding/redesigning the SR-143/I-10 Interchange (SR 143 provides access to/from the east side of Sky Harbor Airport) out to the eastern interchange with I-17.

9:31 the problem with this left on red after stop is that the red left arrow is SOLID. It SHOULD be a BLINKING red arrow, which is like a left turn stop sign (stop and yield).
@Finn-sm3jf
Жыл бұрын
The problem with that is flashing red arrows can’t be displayed unless the directions crossing it perpendicularly are red. In this case a flashing red arrow would not be allowed. The sign changes the meaning of the red light and allows the turn on red after stopping.
@featherpony
Жыл бұрын
@@Finn-sm3jf Why would the perpendicular lights need to be red? You can have a flashing red left arrow (aka stop-and-yield stop-sign left arrow) even with green perpendicular lights. Blinking red (also stop signs) do not mean stop-and-go. They mean stop-an-yield. Yield means you can't go until there is a safe break in traffic. So the perpendicular road can have green lights. Because the person at the blinking red arrow has to sit there and wait on all the green lit traffic, which may take a long time. Haven't you ever seen a stop sign at a roadway with no lights (equivalent green)? The person at the stop sign has to wait for an opportunity to turn. Just like when you leave a driveway.
@Finn-sm3jf

@@featherpony Because it’s a mutcd requirement. If a traffic signal is operating in steady (stop and go) mode, flashing left turn arrows shall not be displayed unless it is allowing a permissive left turn across oncoming traffic or a crosswalk. Since there is no oncoming through movement or crosswalk, a flashing red arrow cannot be displayed in the steady (stop and go) mode because it could be mistaken for a signal that is in flashing (malfunction) mode. Flashing red displays at stop signs are allowed since the the intersection is not controlled by traffic signals, it is controlled by flashing beacons.

There's another important advantage that was not mentioned yet. The flow of left turns getting onto the freeway does not clump because of people waiting for a traffic light to turn. the left turners getting on the freeway don't stop and they maintain distance between each other. That makes merging with the existing traffic much easier for both parties as there are gaps to adjust speed. This anticlumping should eliminate the need for a lot of metering lights like they have in California to restrict the number of cars merging into the existing traffic Lanes. The truck's not having to start from a dead stop also makes everything more efficient.

On the left on red issue, why not have a second dedicated light for left turns? The left lights all have left facing arrows apart from the red. Then when it's safe for a traditional left on red, light up the amber left arrow, with a flashing signal. Then the driver gets the instruction to proceed with caution, whilst the through traffic gets the normal red. The reason for the full set of lights is that traffic management folk can control the ability to turn left and merge into traffic when congestion occurs further on in the DDI or on attached roads.

I played with the one in Phoenix, I-17 & Happy Valley Road. Heading East in the left lane of Happy Valley, I suddenly found myself in a left turn onto the freeway only lane. This was disconcerting driving in the #1 lane. Likewise heading west, the left lane is suddenly the left turn onto the freeway on ramp. However, this time I was expecting it and actually needed it. However the turn is a sharp curve and with Happy Valley 45mph it is deceiving how slow you need to be to avoid running into the barrier. Traveling north bound on I-17 as I exited at Happy Valley, I used the right 2 lanes to head East on Happy Valley and as we curved to the East were suddenly and unexpectedly presented with a red light. The stop is so far into the turn that the lights face west more than south and thus you are not able to judge the light as you make the turn. You simply have to go slow and wait until you can see if the light is green. Plus, you are angled as such that you can't really look for red light runners. In fact, this is the case at every light and worse at the cross overs. Another time traveling East again I approached in the non-left turn lane and was stopped multiple times through the interchange. It is possible this was a weird timing issue early on, or weird time of night thing, but prior I would have zipped through the 2 roundabouts nearly without stopping.

Two-lane "turn on red after stop" is criminally dangerous if there is a pedestrian crossing! It's hard enough to get one lane of traffic to see you when drivers are all focused in the opposite direction; with 2 lanes, pedestrians can get trapped in the middle of the crosswalk.

Trivia: Can a semi truck (and trailer) make a right on red after stopping? Generally it is a bad idea, but, is allowed if the entire vehicle can remain only in right lanes throughout the turn. This includes the lines on the right sides of the lanes (can't use the bike path, not even dotted-line paths, for a red light turn). Most turns require a semi to temporarly cross into additional lanes. Even if the turn is wide enough for a semi to remain in the bounds of the lanes, it still takes a comparitivly long time for a semi to traverse the turn. Cars behind walls, around corners, over hills, behind buildings, behind other vehicles, behind billboards, stopped at another intersection, are generally capeable of colliding with a semi before a turn is completed. So, please stop honking, screaming, gesturing, raging, throwing items, etc, at semis not exercising the _option_ of making a right-on-red. Left-on-red turns present additional visibility issues for a semi. I don't think Left-on-red is ever safe for a semi.

Putting a DDI into an existing, fairly new bridge seems a reasonable use of tax dollars to increase efficiency. But all of those "best" DDIs you described were purpose built, wide (sometime two separate bridges!), and don't seem that much cheaper than a SPUI which has even better flow than a DDI. I'm not saying this interchange doesn't have a place, but if you're building a new bridge, I figure it might as well be a SPUI.

Texas solves the "people don't do Left on Red After Stop" problem by changing it to "Left Yield on Blinking Yellow". From a UX perspective, there's nothing to draw attention to the fact that a "Left on Red" light is an exception to the normal rules, whereas "Blinking Yellow" does. People naturally want to stop and wait when they're making a left at a red light, but they also naturally want to gun it through a light at the first chance if they see a yellow.

Left on Red after stop, onto a one way (from a two way), is legal here (BC Canada) unless placarded otherwise. I believe that's unique in North America

Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Michigan allow left turn on red from two-way onto a one-way. 35 only allow it from a one-way, and 7 states do not allow it at all.

AWESOME VIDEO! I had my eyes glued to this video start to finish. And I have been a pedestrian on the flip-flop in Talent, Oregon, and its strange but sorta safe (I guess). Its weird that is for sure.

The amount of effort you put to not have roundabouts in the U.S. is crazy. Better to wait at the traffic light i guess. At least it makes good videos.

On paper it looks a little confusing... But once you drive it a few times... You wonder why they don't do this everywhere!

When they did this to Illinois Route 59 at Interstate 88 I was like... "WTF?!?!?!? We're not in England or Asia!" I've spent 3 years in Okinawa, Japan.

As someone from the springfield area and have driven on the DDI and drive through one basically every day... i understand the use of them and their benefits but there is often too much confusion too often.

9:44 They forgot the words OK. LEFT TURN ON RED (OK) AFTER STOP ... Remember when Diamond Lanes criteria signs had the word(s) OK?

the left on red thing is an easy fix just have that light be only have green and yellow with a lift on yellow after stop sign and people would use it.

Yeah , I don't think it's aloud to turn left when it's red light because the pedestrian and bike lanes would be in the way, making a conflicts on the road, and especially on a Stroads.
