We find the little ones ideal for our field of vision plus they're obviously super light weight and portable so we get to where the opal is a lot faster!

@@seldoon_nemar oh yeah for sure, there’s plenty of scope for different applications with heavy duty black lights, a lot of tunnelling machines have vicious uv lights worth thousands attached to them, they definitely work but are extremely dangerous to the human eye. Personally I find the small details are usually what leads to payable opal. Almost all the big signs have been picked over a thousand times..

Yeah we collect some of the best stuff for our business to make into jewelry . We found a huge pocket of opalised sea shell fossils a few years back and donated a few of them to the South Australian Museum (for a tax credit) 😁

I'm just seeing that chunk at the top of the hole - the one with the big crack and looking very break off-ish. Have a big phobia of being stuck in hole while everything wants to cave in on me. Probably going to have a wicked nightmare, now.

Haha, I’m not generally claustrophobic but towards the end, my bro is half way into a small hole, I got into that and tucked my legs up and had the worst claustrophobia in my life for a few seconds, a feeling for a few seconds of being buried alive… no thanks.

Not really but CO build up after blasting or from poorly vented claims near petrol motors has killed quite a few over the years.

It’s a round tunnelling machine, it has an arm that rotates with rotating heads and tungsten teeth, as opposed to the ‘square’ machine that has a head that just goes up and down.

@@marcoallin Not enough water around Coober Pedy for this, most use blowers to suck the dust out alomg with the dirt but fans are pretty powerfu these days and masks are good quality for filtration too.

Sorry how is the title clickbait? Do you not see him being lowered down into a giant eroded sketchy shaft via a cable (off the back of a Ute) and sitting on a plank of wood ? Opal mining is a dangerous job and this video in my opinion adequately represents the old saying ‘risking life and limb’ in the pursuit of opal. Please elaborate on how it’s clickbait

Yeah! It’s phosphorescence. Many gems do it, it’s a slow release of the energy from the initial flooding of UV light.
