@@oceanstaiga5928 OK. From an American white bread and Japanese white bread are different. Also milk bread has Milk powder or milk and has a milk flavor where as Japanese White bread does not. I tried these for the first time this past summer after living in Japan for many years. I have to say: they are pretty fabulous afternoon treats. The strawberry ones I picked up at 7/11 have a bit of custard as well as cream--and that is a good addition. And you're correct; getting the proportion of fruit to bread right is a good idea. (Also, it took me forever to try the baked sweet potatoes they sell year round here. An utter failure on my part not to try them earlier, as they are amazing! The best ones are soft, silky, creamy goodness.)

I was supposed to go to Japan next month and one thing I was going to do was try their popular dishes/snacks like this, but I can't get into the country. I work for an organization that has ties to Japan through a specific medical research organization, so we get visitors from Japan on a regular basis. They always bring snacks. None of us can read Japanese (one guy could but he retired) so what they are is always a guessing game. The two funniest so far were the "shrimp crackers" that were literally pressed, freeze-dried shrimp (looked exactly like shrimp but flat and paper-thin) and some fruit-shaped mystery candy that turned out to be glass chopstick rests. Oops. The shrimp crackers were a little freaky but so far everything else has been delicious. I think the closest thing I can think of to these that's homegrown American is the Philadelphia-style cream cheese and jelly sandwich (grape jelly traditionally but we usually use red plum or raspberry jam instead), but I think that plays a lot more on the tartness/borderline savoriness of cream cheese against the sweet fruit preserves.

The kaki-no-tane reminds me of our version of seasoned packed snack, which we call 'kacang putih', believed to have been brought here by Indian laborers during British colonisation. Murukku and an assortment of nuts, beans and lentils are fried and seasoned before they're packaged and make for a convenient travel snack. There's a huge variety and and can be mixed and matched like trail mix. My personal favorite is spiced ground nuts and green peas, which I consume by the handful if I could get my hands on them.
