So many of their songs can be interpreted more than one way. It could be a love song but I wonder if this could also reflect their feelings about their earlier breakup. Also at this time they were wandering a bit in the wilderness having trouble deciding their future course. Barry - "Maybe there's a reason why we broke up, I could dedicate my life to something new. I must have been asleep but then I woke up working out why I was still with you". Robin - "Telling me the things I'm gonna be". People kept pulling them apart to go solo. "Now the hurt's all gone I've pushed them all behind me (he was hurt thinking he hadn't been given credit for his contributions) and the world is gonna' fall in love with me" (The press really vilified him for breaking up the band and he knew it.) Together - "I would be respected. In the prime of my life I'll do everything right." They said the broke up as boys but came back together as men. On the other hand my interpretation might be nonsense!😜😜 The smiles they exchanged were sweet.

@Susie Q you could be right but as you said, who knows? They always said not to assume songs were written about themselves.

There is a video of them singing this song on The Johnnie Carson Show. It's fabulous. They also sing while on his couch and Maurice is doing one of his funny acts and Robin has to close his eyes to finish the song so Maurice doesn't make him laugh...but he does smile while sing just because he knows the audience is laughing at whatever Maurice is doing. Robin and Maurice are both in good moods and playing off each other. Barry isn't the center of attention as he usually is. The twins are.

You must be thinking of their performance from March '73. Think all 3 were the center of attention, but one of them had to be the adult.

I love this song. The lyrics are pure genius. As you mentioned how Barry looked at Robin, I've noticed that in many of their live performances how they watched each other, sometimes giving a smile or a nod.

On the live version they had a lovely hummed harmonic end to this song which just made it extra special after the guitar solo. One of my favourite BG songs.

As old as I am and also such a huge fan of The Bee Gees, it blows my mind how many songs I HAVEN’T heard! This one was so good. They really just do not disappoint. I’ve always been in love with Robin’s voice (or soul) but I love it when you can hear all three harmonize too. I wanted to ask you if you’ve seen the documentary about them. “The Bee Gees How do you Mend a Broken Heart.” Alan Kendall is one of the people they interviewed. He’d been with them since 1969 or 70. Long time. Really sweet guy and very talented. Thank you for this song! Love your reactions. Thank you.

What an experience that was? Alan Kendall on the guitar, I think. "midnight stars are shining on my shoeshine" is such an illustrative line, showing its age, though. It seems for me to be the bookend piece to Tomorrow Tomorrow. Not "drink my wine" but here "everybodys going to love me". Such great lyrics

Thanks a lot. This gem is the first track (side A) of their unreleased album called "A kick in the head is worth eight in the pants" recorded from October 1972 to January 1973.Too bad this is a shortened video, the end of the song is so heavenly. Only four songs were relaesed, three on singles and the fouth on a UK compilation. "Wouldn't I be someone" (album version 5:44) was released as a single in June 1973 in edited form at 3:24.

If I’m not mistaken the album this was recorded for was the first that Alan Kendall played on. I definitely think they had their breakup on their mind when this was written. I would think they regretted that it stopped the momentum they had going, especially since music groups tend to have a limited time, and even once said that no one wanted to see a 40 year old pop star perform. (That turned out not to be true:)

It's a piece of brilliance. Should have been a charttopper, those days. Also their single 'Saw A New Morning', but I think, the musicindustry didn't except them as country-folkband. And so, the 'Wind Of Change' blew them into another spheres, as we all know. Alan Kendall is really so, so great and was on their side up to 2001! A very good fellow, playin' phantastic leadguitar. Also to hear on the last track of their last album, called 'Voice In The Wilderness'.
