I'll be 52 in mid November and I'd give nearly anything to turn the clock back to the 80's and back to my teens. I recently saw a current pic of Billy Squier (LOVED Billy when I was a teen!!!!). It was hard to see how aged he is. I somehow managed to freeze time in my mind since the 80's came to an end and I guess chose to live in a weird state of denial. The 80's generation is aging and that's so difficult to comprehend. It's so true....you don't love what you've got till it's gone forever. Anyway this song brings a flood of memories.

"Grass is always greener over there"? No, the grass is greener where it's watered. This song, to me, is such a reminder to be thankful for what you already have. The story in these lyrics are sad but true. One person wants what the other one has, and the other is saying it's not all it's made out to be. Just goes to show you that envy and jealousy is counting someone else's blessings instead of your own.

Have loved this song from the first time I heard it in HS,early 1980s. What he is trying to say,I Think,is that in the human condition people always think that others have it better than them. The grass is always greener, etc,in someone else's backyard. When in fact, they may be suffering or going thru things you have no idea about. It just looks to outward appearances like they are doing great. We never know what burdens others carry around. Very powerful message and song. And I am a metal head from way back. Black Sabbath,Judas Priest,Slsyer, etc. But good, powerful music is just that,no matter the genre. In my top 10 favorite songs. A masterpiece of meaning.

@c1981 1. You're replying to a 3+ year old comment. 2. What he said is factually correct. The charts are less diverse than ever and littered with digitally rendered songs and autotune. I have always loved this song, but I've only just started covering it. Like all great songs, it works on so many levels. It sounds simple, but it isn't. The lyrics set a dynamic between two opposing positions. Lots of clever use of chords and phrasing. Holding a chord at the end of a verse and then continuing the same chord into the next phrase. At the end Nik puts the first verse into the chorus, but enters at the second chord to make it work. Pure Genius.

Yes, I agree. Musically, the transitions, on so many levels, are incredible and too numerous to mention. Great arrangement and production. Very engaging. I always put this song among the really great ones like Under Pressure and Baker Street. Like my nephew once told me, "how you do a song is, even, more important than the melody." This song was done really well. 'Genius' is the right word.

@@alexvagias5295 Yes there are so many clever things going on in this song. I think your nephew hits the nail on the head. I and others, for that matter, would call it "musicality". I was one month old when Kershaw played this song at Live Aid. I only first heard it when I looked into that monumental event, but it's become an absolute favorite. I've had a pretty good life, and whenever I get dissatisfied with it, I listen to this song and it helps me to put things back in perspective. I AM the guy with the greener grass, but this song it truly incredible. So far I've not heard much of Kershaw's work, but I've liked every song of his that I've ever heard. Queen may have brought the house down in 85 at live aid, but Kershaw' one of the top reasons I still return to that channel here. This song is just awesome, no matter how he performs it. That takes real talent with a lot of honed ability. Bravo!

It’s 2024 and being an 80s born and bred I think I get this song even more in today’s world… wouldn’t it be good to be back in 80s shoes even if it was for one day 😢

Play this song at your local bar or lounge and people will come up to you and ask you who it is. Why so many great songs like this one never end on the radio or more well known is a mystery to me.

Wouldn't it be good if we could bring back the 80's? Even if it was just one day? Wouldn't it be good if there was a radio station that only played songs from 60's, 70's and the 80's?

this was my personal anthem for 4 years, from 10 to 14. It's 4 decades later and I still like it. Even without the severe depression. Sometimes it is that bad.

One reason the year 1984 was the best musical year of the decade: This song, plus Thompson Twins, VanHalen's Jump, Dan Hartman, Night Ranger, the breakthrough of U2, etc...

I grow up in the 80's, such a great time for movies and music. They related together. ..It has never again been so related. The " Pretty in Pink", sound track. OMG- the best. It still holds its' own.
