There are a lot of rules of thumb out there about how much to prune off of your fruit tree and what size limbs you can remove. Those rules have their place, but understanding how a tree will respond to different pruning cuts and wounds is critically important if you are looking to keep a tree healthy and alive. In this video we take a closer look at an old apple tree and how it has responded over the past few years to the different pruning cuts that I've had to make - many of which were unavoidable due to disease and decay. We'll also discuss how you can help the tree heal over those cuts and how we might be able to encourage it to do so quicker. I plan to follow up in the coming years to see how those experiments go.
