No "probably" about it. Part 95 (GMRS) and Part 97 (ham) are mutually exclusive. They different services for different classes of user. I'm a big proponent of decent quality Part 95 compliant GMRS radios making inroads into the US, preferably at reasonable prices. But do get licensed; as of 12/30/2020, the license fee just dropped down to $50 (from $70). W2IRT & WRJB851. Not afraid to use my calls.

We travel fulltime around the country in a RV and my wife follows behind in a car, we use a pair of Midland X-tra Talks to keep in touch and get about 2 miles max. There are times if going through congested areas that we get separated and that just isn't enough and there is NO WAY I'm going to get her to get a HAM license LOL. So this radio might just be good enough to get us the couple extra miles we need. I would love to have a 20 mile range but 5 while traveling is much better than 2 max. Just ordered the KG-805G and my GMRS license. Reading some FCC stuff on GMRS, and it says "If you receive a license, any family member, regardless of age, can operate GMRS stations and units within the licensed system." What does "family member" actually mean? Would it include my sister and brother-in-law who live 5 miles away? Or, my elderly parents who also live about that far away? Thanks! OOPS! I found it. Its quite broad. "(2) Any individual who holds an individual license may allow his or her immediate family members to operate his or her GMRS station or stations. Immediate family members are the licensee's spouse, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, parents, grandparents, stepparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and in-laws." Cool.

I now have both the KG-805G and the KG-905G. Initially, I was so impressed with the 905G that I couldn't wait to dump the 805G. But after the excitement subsided I decided that both radios had different advantages so I decided to keep both of them. Oddly, I have come to the conclusion that sometimes carrying a cheaper radio is better because I'm less concerned about getting it bumped or dropped. Also, I personally prefer the longer 905G antenna on the 805G and vice-versa. The longer antenna just looks more at home on the bigger radio. Try it if you have both radios and you'll see what I mean. I also really like the fact that the 805G can be operated with a battery case in a pinch, whereas the 905G currently cannot.

Glad I found your channel. Great reviews. Direct and straightforward. I've bought a few ham radios from Two Way Radios. They've always been great to deal with. They also get some just for them configurations done. I picked up the Wouxun 2 meter/6 meter (FM only) HT from them. As for the ham snobs. I have my General ticket. The handheld radio I run 24/7 is a TYT-UV88 that I have a total of about $32 dollars in shipped. I've dropped it on concrete several times and it still looks and works great. I liked it so much I bought a second one JIC. I have and extra battery and swap batteries every night before going to bed. My Wouxun rig mentioned above is also a solid radio. I wish I could afford higher end stuff, but the radios I have are excellent. Okay, the Boafeng UV-5Rs have all been given away (there may be one in the radio can). My Ham base station for 2 meters is a Yaesu FT2900 mobile on a power supply and that's as fancy as I get. I have had a couple of failed Chinese mobiles, both returned for full refunds no problem. But my current dual band Chinese mobile in the van is working quite well. Being dual licensed (also GMRS) I am happy to see more serious GMRS radios out there and more serious operators using them. If I didn't already have several HTs both Ham and GMRS I would be looking seriously at that KG0805G.

@W2IRT
3 жыл бұрын
The Baofengs have a few problems that this radio does not. Those UV5R and similar radios are not Part 95 certificated, meaning they can be field-programmable onto commercial or gov't frequencies. I've got a massive problem with this, personally. Too easy to put in a transmit frequency and PL for a police agency or fire department or ambulance service and cause very real problems. This radio here (or any Part 95 radio), are limited to GMRS and FRS frequencies, and whatever you choose to use them for, there is zero risk of some idiot trying to talk to the county sheriff or paramedics. They are restricted to the band they're intended for and will be great trail radios. The other problem with the Baofengs is that their transmitters are very dirty. So even though they're being used (illegally) on GMRS frequencies, which frankly doesn't bother me a whole lot, the spurious emissions are not well suppressed...and for the non propeller-heads, that means if you're keying down on GMRS channel 3, you MIGHT have a portion of your signal up at 482 MHz or down at 455, where your local cops or emergency services may end up hearing you and not their dispatcher. As an off-road driver I have a firm respect for wheeling responsibly, not throwing trash on the trails and respecting others out having fun. I apply that same ethic to radio operating. Do it right and have fun.

You can scan/receive pretty much all VHF/UHF frequencies with this radio. You will need to find out what frequencies your local emergency responders use, and whether or not they are digital/encrypted (most are). Once you know what frequencies they are on you can check the specs for the radio to make sure it's in the range (probably is) - but if they use digital systems, this radio, and most other radios, will not be able to hear them.

I really don't think that a different antenna would do much better on this radio. 1/4 WL at 462MHZ is only 6.5 inches. The antenna that comes with this radio is about 6.5 inches, so there's really not much loading at all. This means that most or all of the power put out by the radio goes out the antenna. A 1/4 wavelength antenna on a handheld is about the best you can do. Smaller antennas use "loading coils" to become resonant on longer wavelengths. The most basic explanation for a loading coil is that it takes all of the rf energy that can't make it out of the antenna, and turns it into heat. So you would put 5w into a short antenna, and would only be transmitting 1 or 2 watts, with the rest being turned into heat. But like I said, this radio has almost exactly a 1/4 wavelength antenna, so it's likely about as efficient an antenna as you could put on a handheld unit.

If the kids aren’t transmitting on the repeater channels which would be hard to do they can use it. It’s basically just transmitting like you’re on a walkie talkie and can talk with others. There’s separate channels that are repeater channels and you would have to punch in the codes and tones so even if they accidentally switch to that channel they won’t be able to transmit on the repeater. I have one of these for walkie talkie use and don’t use on repeaters. And you don’t need a license unless you transmit on repeaters

I assume your are correctly choosing/setting the comm port in the Wouxun software? If you cant get the other computer to connect then contact BuyTwoWayRadios customer support and they can help you narrow down what the problem is.. If they confirm it is an issue with the radio, they will send you a new one.

Question about GMRS repeaters. I’m doing an overland camping thing soon where cell service sucks. I’m meeting another group of Jeeps coming from another direction (meeting in the middle). Trying to get the max range from these handhelds. Example, if We are on channel 16 which is a GMRS freq. Would our radios hit those repeaters without the “tone” codes?? Thanks
@khabuda
3 жыл бұрын
Every repeater is different. You have to look up the repeaters on mygmrs.com to see if they have codes or not. If they do, you will not be able to use the repeater without it. It's also best practice to determine which repeaters you think you will need, and contact the owners to request permission to use their system.

Thanks a lot for great reviews I got two of the radios and was bit worried about antenna. Hence I also get Surecom tester and NA-771 and NA-771G antennas to see the difference. I really like your video where you optimized the length of antenna and make it very short for one of the Baofangs radios. Wonder if such procedure would apply to KG-805G?

I have this radio and to anyone that’s in the fence, get it. It’s a solid piece of kit. Worth the $ and will blow away any of the bubble pack radios you find at Walmart. You can also swap the antenna for a taller one like the Nagoya’s or even hook it to a mobile antenna via adapter.

Maybe a dumb question - but if the range is 5 miles depending on terrain then how are you able to hit a repeater that is 17 miles away?
@TheNotaRubicon

Range from one KG805 to another kg805 is ~5 miles. Range from a KG-805 to a repeater is ~70 miles... Your actual range will vary depending on many factors.

Also, repeater may be high in altitude. Some repeater antennas could easily be anywhere from 200-1200ft above ground, depending on the tower/structure they are mounted on.

Everything you described in your video was on the money, and I think I'll be using these handhelds more (as soon as I figure them out). I can't believe that the GMRS license fee is down to $50 now, but perhaps that opens the door for others to pick up a license soon.

Hey there better looking than Sherwood.... Saturday I took delivery of the first of two (2) of the first two hundred (200) Wouxon KG-905G GMRS radios shipped to the USA. I also purchased two (2) XLT SE110 Surveillance Earpieces. I am pretty proud to be one of the first to get them. Megan from "Buy Two Way Radios was my sales consultant. She pretty much sold these units to me stating about their superiority over the other GMRS radios on the market. Here's my questions, I know you have a far greater knowledge than me, so..... do you know if I made a wise decision over the Wouxon KG-805G radio, which they don't know when they will be back in stock? Any "insider trading" shall I say, about beneficial features over the KG-805G that you may know about or lacking of "carry forward" features that might have went away? Why no keypad? Shouldn't there be a keypad on such an expensive radio? How about internals, would there be a better design inside? I'm sorry to ramble on.... but I'm pretty excit! These will be bugout radios for my wife and I. Plus..... being a 100% DAV they will also serve as an intercom system for our home and property becauseI am limited from a bad back (post surgery 11 day right now from my 7th spinal fusion). Lastly, I have an H2 that I bought new in 2004 and it's sole purpose now is as our bug-out vehicle.... six (6) inch Fabtech lift wit 37" Maxxis Trepadors make it a beast! Would you recommend one KG-1000G unit in it for stand alone radio or two KG-1000G UNITS in the H2 as a repeater? I don't think that I have seen a repeater in a vehicle yet. Any ideas? If you would rather email me my address is: kenmarsh65@gmail.com Thanks for any insight and knowledge that you may "transmit" my way! Ken M.

Yes. I programmed the FM button he indicates to SCAN. Had my 2 about a year. Nearly all of this HT is front panel programmable. And that 'nice lady's' voice can be eliminated easily. Used mine kayak fishing a remote creek talking to camp last Summer. Distance about a mile (in an NRS VHF HT dry bag). Even had a 20 mi. 805 - Kenwood mobile conversation with excellent results. About 1000' elevation difference but a good size timbered hill between.. very surprising. Maybe a one-off. Also used elk hunting last Fall in varied terrain and worked very well, but had to watch elevation for best results of course. If you let it sit the battery will die. One more thing on this hijack.. I have 3 15" antennas on the way from BTWR (adding one to my Kenwood HT also).

Q#1: I have an event coming up in June in which I want to connect my KG805G to four Midland FRS and a Baofeng UV-5R. After picking the channel to be used would you suggest a tone to ensure the radios can reach each other (for use in a football stadium-graduation). Thank you.

I would suggest using NO tone, as that will only complicate things, and will in no way ensure that the radios can reach each other.
