If only every father could afford a boat. Finding good places to fish without one is becoming more and more difficult due to development and private property. And most public bank fishing areas are so over fished and have such high traffic around them it’s almost impossible to take a kid there and have a fun time catching anything. Kids don’t enjoy just sitting there with a line in the water for hours with no bites or getting their bait stollen by tiny little sunfish pecking at it. To get to any good spots anymore you pretty much need a boat and most fathers just don’t have access to one. Doesn’t make them bad dads.
@southernpaganprincess7739
2 жыл бұрын
@@srcastic8764 you need more creativity in your life. It’s not about catching fish. It’s about catching dads full attention for an entire afternoon. It doesn’t matter what you do it matters that you chose to do something with them that makes them feel important and cool to you. That’s what being a cool dad is. Catching a fish, winning at horseshoes, learning to canoe, going to the junk yard or antique store looking for something as simple as an old pocket knife or fishing lure or old ass Atari and talking shop, learning to change the oil or brakes on a car, hiking in the woods, building forts, talking to him about all the cool shit dad did growing up, building a craft by hand with dad helping not just dad fiddling in the corner drinking a beer and talking to old buddy Joe Whothefuckcares. It’s any experience with full attention from dad they’re longing for. Ask a kid they’ll tell you. They just want your time and full sober attention. This is the same for girls too. Girls learn from dad what kind of man they’ll marry. Our husbands are either an extension of dad or his complete opposite.

@@southernpaganprincess7739 you think I don’t understand that? I raised three kids and did all kinds of things with them so no need for the condescension. My comment was strictly about fishing. And if you’ve ever taken a kid fishing, they want to catch a fish. You can be the coolest dad in the world, they still want to catch a fish. So going to the over fished public area doesn’t cut it. That’s what my comment is about. If you want to discuss every single thing I ever did with my kids as they grew up, and that I now do with them and their kids, we’re gonna be here a while you condescending ass.

As a boy a little bigger than that, I had caught a pretty nice flounder. He was putting up a good fight and then suddenly not. Both dad and I thought the fish had shook himself loose. That wasn't what had happened though. The difference in depths from where I had hooked the flounder to the surface was enough to push his swim bladder out. This to a nearby shark spelled "candy". The shark took a bite that perfectly excised the belly and the gills from The Flounder. By the time I got it to the surface, the only cleaning left to do was to fillet it.

Not impressed no guard rail on the boat and no one wearing a life jacket.

I grew up right where this was filmed. What you can’t see is that maybe 50 ft behind the guy taking the video is a low bridge. The channel is narrow (maybe 80’ across ?) and we used to jump off that bridge and swim to shore on the opposite side from those mangroves he’s facing… but still !! Yikes !!

That's when you switch to your heavier tackle and slap what's left of that Jack Crevalle on a 12/0 hook and wire tracer. Those lagoons and mangroves are teeming with lemons, bulls, and other sharks.

Are they dangerous? I’ve heard about Bull Sharks, but do you worry?

We were there for snook on this day, but you're right. With some heavier tackle and a little wire leader we could have had some more fun.

I was always taught to keep your rod tip up at all times when a fish is on. Strange to hear rod tip down.

I’ve heard em both. When you think about it. It really makes no difference. It is the same angle the line is being pulled to regardless of poll angle.

I was taught to do both. Keep the rod down if there was some slack in the line from the fish coming towards you. If it turned away or at right angles, bring the rod up and get the fish to circle back to you. Then drop rod and keep reeling.

Up the fish can get stuck under the boat. Down gives you more control to prevent that.

A few years ago I was Red fishing in Bayport, Florida and when I tried to grab my Red a Bull Shark came up and grabbed it. He didn't get the fish but ALMOST got my hand. Scariest moment of my life.

Happened to me reeling in a mackerel in Ireland last summer, fishing off the rocks with a light spinning rod. Had the mackerel near the rocks, a big brown porbeagle surfaced and ran with it....bit it in half... memorable experience.. well done young man...

God Bless you for raising that boy right! So many fathers are absent in their sons' lives and it's such a shame. This warms my heart to see. Reminds me of my pa taking me fishing for my first time, catching a few trout for dinner.

When my son was around seven or eight, he and I went fishing and he caught a flathead Cat that weigh about 10 pds and he was so excited we put him in a small spring so he could decide what he wanted to do with him so he named him Hubert and turned him back loose so maybe catch him again someday. My son is 35 years old now and every now and then, he’ll bring up wonder how Hubert is LOL.
